Lost (Episode 403) - The Economist

Lost
Episode 403
The Economist

All through season three, I complained to anyone who would listen (and some who wouldn’t) that Sayid is being under-utilized. Sayid is such an awesome character – I mean, who do you know that is a torturer of note (not that that should be something to be proud of), a fixer-upper of electronic goods, brave and intelligent? And good-looking too. No, I missed Super-Sayid last season.

Well, thank the 4-toed statue. Super-Sayid is back!!

We’ll start with the flash-forward, as usual. Sayid, we learn, is one of the Oceanic 6, happily playing golf in a secluded golf course in Seychelles. He starts chatting to a guy who encounters him on the course, and Bam! The next thing you know Sayid has just killed the man and calmly walks away.

So begins Sayid’s interesting flash-forward. He then gets involved with a blonde woman in Germany, whose boss is apparently Sayid’s next victim. Sayid eventually kills her after finding out that her boss “The Economist” s trying to learn Sayid’s identity.

Wounded and bleeding, Sayid makes his way to a vet’s office, where Benry stitches him up. It’s clear from their conversation that Sayid is working for Benry. Oh frakk. Sayid – working for Benry!! Whoa!! More on this later.

Back on the island Sayid, Kate and Miles head off for the barracks to try and get Charlotte back. Super-Sayid has a plan – he wants to get on that boat. He doesn’t buy the story that the newbies are feeding them and he wants to see for himself what they are up to. Juliet, meanwhile, leaves for the beach to fetch Desmond. Jackass stays behind with Frank and Daniel.

In Camp Locke, however, Hurley is beginning to question his decision to go with Locke. But still he follows Locke and still does what Locke wants of him – which includes deceiving Sayid and Kate into believing that Locke & company have left him behind, bound and gagged in a cupboard.

Once Kate, Sayid and Miles have been captured, Sayid is locked in a room with Benry, where Locke comes in to see him. Locke apologises for the deception but couldn’t be sure that they were alone. Sayid informs him that he doesn’t believe the newbies either, but Frank has promised him a trip to the boat if he returns with Charlotte.

Later, Sayid returns to the helicopter with Charlotte, but without Kate and Miles. It’s hinted at that Sayid has swapped Miles for Charlotte. Kate, it seems has agreed to stay with Locke. Frank gets ready to leave the island with Desmond, Sayid and Naomi’s body.

So, here are the key points from this episode.

• The first being that Sayid is one of the Oceanic 6 along with Hurley, Kate and Jackass.

• The 2nd, and probably most important is that Sayid is working for Benry. As absolutely unbelievable as this is, we need to look at certain conversations that were had. The first, I think, is what Sayid utters to Locke re Benry “The day I start trusting him is the day I loose my soul

And if we listened to what transpired between Benry and Sayid in the vet’s office, we can conclude that something happened on the island that lead Sayid to start to trust Benry, or at least believe that the safety of his friends lay in Benry’s hands.

The “friends” that Benry refers to - I am assuming that he means those that have been left on the island. Wow. I cannot wait to see how this all plays out. Brilliant twist.

• How does Benry get off the island? If he is not one of the Oceanic 6, did he get away with them or does he find his way back to civilization on his own?!? I am so in awe of the man. I have Benry Love people. He’s turning out to be a huge favourite of mine – in spite of his evilness, or perceived evilness anyway. What we must remember is that these story are from the point-of-view from the Losties, and therefore very biased and very one-sided. What if he is the good guy, like he’s always claimed???

• Daniel Faraday’s experiment. How cool was that?!? There is a time difference of about 31 minutes with the outside world and the island. Is this the reason why the island can’t be found? How is a time rift even possible when the boat is just a few kilometers away?

Time from rocket                                 Time on the island

Other interesting things that we ought to take note of:

• Kate staying behind with Sawyer. I’m not sure that she’s stayed out of her own free will. It’s quite obvious that she’s still pissed with Sawyer… and it’s obvious that Sawyer really cares about her and wants a future with her. I’m not sure about this and I’ll just wait for the next episode before I make up my mind about it.

• Something else I found very interesting was Jackass’s attitude towards Kate. Jackass has accepted that Kate’s heart supposedly lies with Sawyer. What I found especially interesting (while quietly grinning like the Cheshire cat) was Kate trying to be her usually coy self, softly grinning etc etc. All that was missing was the fluttering eyelashes.. and Jackass doesn’t fall for it. There’s hope for him yet!

• Oh yeah… did anyone else notice that Elsa (Sayid’s German girlfriend) was wearing a very similar bracelet to the one that Naomi had on??

In summation, this has been an awesome episode. I particularly liked it because Sayid finally got a chance to show us how super he is. And the fact that he looked so good in his flash-forward had nothing to do with it. Bring on the next episode.

What we have learnt:

• Sayid and Ben get off the island
• Sayid trades Miles for Charlotte
• Daniel does a really cool experiment that indicates a 31 minute time rift.
• Future Sayid works for Ben as a contract killer.
• Whoever it is that they are killing are aware of it
• The newbies do not know why they are supposed to capture Benry
• Jacob’s hut is not in the same place as it previously was.
• Sawyer doesn’t want to leave the island

New Questions
• Who is the Economist?
• How does this time rift even exist?
• How does Benry get off the island?
• Why is Sayid working for him?

That’s all I have for today.

Interesting Trivia (Courtesy of tv.com)

• This is the first episode where we see a birds eye view of the island.

• This episode is the third episode that Sayid has been shot.
He's also been shot by Mikhail, in "Enter 77", and he shoots himself in a flashback.

• We find out Ben has a drawer full of various currencies from around the world yet he clearly hasn't been to England in a while. The twenty pound note shown is from the "D" series of banknotes featuring a portrait of Michael Faraday.
This note was withdrawn from use in February 2001, almost four years before this episode is set and was replaced by a new design featuring Edward Elgar. It has since been replaced again.

• The fade-out sound at the end of this episode is not the usual one. (I didn't notice this)

• Elsa, Sayid's girlfriend in his flash forward, had several similarities with his girlfriend earlier in the series, Shannon: She is tall, fair, with light hair and she ends up shot in the abdomen, just like Shannon.

Interesting Screen Caps

The helicopter leaving the island.  Daniel tells Frank that he must stay on the exact same course that they arrived on.

Hurley in the closet.

Refreshments have been served.

This weeks gratuitous pic of Sawyer. :)

Wow.  bloody good episode.
my jaw hit the floor when i saw who it was that sayid was t alking too.  i thought it could have been jack, or maybe even locke.

and faraday's experiment - what the f*ck.  this seems like a random thing, but i am sure it is not.  its going to lead to something big.

awesome recap.  thanks.

Random thing?

For me Faraday's experiment was the most cruicial point to the episode, coupled with the dissapearence of Jacob's cabin.

4 of the Oceanic 6 are known.  2 left I guess......

I could hear from the accent and manner of speech that it was Ben that was talking to Sayid and the visuals proved it... another brilliant factor of the episode.

Interesting times in this brilliant show

Sjoe, ja this episode kept me glued to the screen, can't believe I'm turning into a mini-LOSA!!!
Thanks for the recap Six, I missed most of the "key" stuff, like we are supposed to notice all those things!!

Sayid was Sooper indeed! The way his hair shiningly jangled when he was lying on his side with psycho-scrawny, slurrrp.

>>There’s hope for him yet!<<

Yay! Pleased you're thinking so. Even though I like Sawyer I'm still more on Jack's side  -  reckon he just can't help himself when he goes over the edge.

The thing about season 4 that freaks me the most are the flash forwards, because you don't know in which order they are. With the flashbacks it did not matter because it was everyone story of how they got to be on the plane.

The flash forwards could be years apart for all we know. It just adds more questions to the list. What I am waiting for is a flash forward from someone who stays on the island, if it will be done.

True!!  Very very true.
We are left very teeny pieces of an ever-growing puzzle....

>>Even though I like Sawyer I'm still more on Jack's side - reckon he just can't help himself when he goes over the edge.<<

You know, I am not  not on Jack's side.  I don't dislike him.  Yeah, he annoys me... but his heart is always in the right place.  What I don't like is Katie stringing them along.  They both deserve better.

Have a look at this link

It's an interview with Damon Lindlehof and Carlton Cuse and they address many of teh issues raised here - example, the timeline of the flash-forwards, the bracelet, the Oceanic 6 etc.  They don't give definite answers (as if they would!!) but it's a brilliant article.
