Episode 8 – Collision

This Ana-Lucia centric episode turned out to be a bit of a sob-fest. It had me riveted, and I actually had a moment (maybe a spilt second) of sympathy for Kate.

Ana-Lucia, pre-crash, was a cop with the LAPD who was shot by a burglar with hollow point bullets.  go check the link, I investigated hollow point bullets, very interesting).

After 4 months of therapy, she is given the all-clear and goes back to the force. She is assigned a desk job but demands to be put back on patrol. The captain (who just happens to be her mother) gives in and reassigns her to a car (patrol).

While on patrol she responds to a domestic violence call, and she draws her gun on one of the ‘perpetrators’. Her partner calms her down. Back at the station, Ana-Lucia is informed that they caught the guy who shot her.

Her mum informs her that they guy confessed and all the need is for Ana-Lucia to confirm that he is indeed the culprit. She claims never to have seen him before. But later, she’s in a bar, and so is the culprit (Jason). When he leaves, she follows him and shoots him, after informing him that she had been pregnant.

Hmmmmmmm. I seem to feel strangely detached from Ana-Lucia. I do feel a smidgeon of sympathy for her, but there is just something about her that I can’t pinpoint. I can understand her paranoia, I can understand why she is so aggressive, and I get it all. But there’s just something. I’ve decided that (for now at least) I neither like nor dislike her.

Meanwhile when Sayid realizes that Ana-Lucia is responsible for Shannon’s death, he and Mr Eko get into a brawl after Sayid draws a gun on Ana-Lucia. Mr Eko knocks Sayid out. Ana-Lucia orders Eko to tie Sayid up with the vines from Sawyers stretcher; he refuses.

She then orders Libby, at gun point, to tie him up. When Michael decides to give some of the water to Sayid, Ana-Lucia objects and orders him not too. “You wanna shoot me? Shoot me” he says to her. Eko decides to take Sawyer to the camp, saying to Ana-Lucia that he’s not doing it for Sawyer, but for himself. After a while, she orders Michael, at gun point to go to their camp and bring her clothes, food, etc. She believes that our original survivors will not let her live once they realize that Shannon’s death was her fault. Jin stays behind with Sayid.

Kate, Charlie and Hurley are playing golf when Jack joins them. He and Kate decide to have a friendly bet, and go off to the golf course. Jack hits his ball into the jungle bordering the course. He and Kate go into the jungle where they find the ball. Mr Eko finds them there. Jack rushes Sawyer into the hatch’s shower, saying that his wound has turned septic. Kate goes off to find medication for Jack.

When Kate returns with the pills, Jack tries giving Sawyer one, but Sawyer won’t swallow. Kate says that she will try. At this point she’s cradling him and speaks to Sawyer, telling him that it’s her that he needs to take the pills. She feeds him the pills and he swallows. She is obviously quite distressed about Sawyer, and Jack, I think, finally realizes that Kate’s affections lie with Sawyer. He tries to make light of the situation by joking that they didn’t teach him that technique at med school.

Eko, meanwhile is looking around the hatch. He sees the Dharma logo and probably recognizes it from their hatch. He also looks disapprovingly at the vast array of weapons available. Locke walks in and greets him. He wants to know what happened. Eko explains what happened, calling it an accident. He tells Locke that a girl was shot – “A tall, blonde girl” Locke identifies her as Shannon and looks quite stunned and grief-stricken.

Meanwhile, Bernard tells Ana-Lucia that he is going to the camp. He tells Ana-Lucia that he knows that he would be dead without her, and he appreciates what she has done for them, but he is leaving. In a fit of fury, she orders them all to go. Jin leaves after a reassuring nod from Sayid.

Jack is furious when he hears that Shannon has been killed and that Sayid is being held prisoner at gun point. He gathers weapons and demands that Eko take him there. At that point Michael bursts in and spills all. . Jack gets even more furious and demands that Eko takes him there at once, Eko asks him what he wants – “Justice? Peace? Revenge?” Jack replies that he just wants all his people back safely, and Eko says to him that “Ana-Lucia made a mistake” Jack is surprised, and knows that this is probably the same Ana-Lucia he shared a drink with before the fated flight. Mr Eko agrees to take Jack to Sayid and Ana-Lucia, but alone and without weapons.

Ana-Lucia is now interrogating Sayid, asking him where he’s from and if he has any kids. When he asks her id she is going to kill him, she asks him “should I”. Sayid recounts how he tortured Sawyer on the island. He tells her about countless others who he has tortured before, he tells her that he still hears their screams, their voices at night. Then he tells her that maybe he should kill him, and that perhaps she was meant to.

She, in turn, tells him how she was shot. She says that she feels dead inside. When he asks her what happened to the shooter, she replies that they never found him. She then frees Sayid, and drops both the gun and machete at his feet, and tells him to take his revenge. He tells her “What good would that do when we are both dead”

He goes to Shannon and cradles her lifeless body. The episode ends, like I said, with a sob fest – Sayid carrying Shannon’s body back to camp and Michael, Jin and Bernard being reunited with the survivors.

I sobbed my heart out. It’s Sayid’s fault. That look on his face just kills me. I can understand why he’s been nominated for an Emmy (twice, I think) for this role. He really is an excellent actor. Also seeing Michael being reunited with Vincent and the others was so bittersweet. I really felt for Michael here. On the one hand he is obviously happy to be back, but with Walt still missing……..

Also, Jin and and Sun’s reunion was sweet, but the sweetest moment was Bernard and Rose. Awwwww.

I don’t know if everyone is like this, but while this was all going on, all I was thinking about was Sayid bringing Shannon’s body back, and how the mood will instantly change in camp.

All in all, it was just a very bittersweet episode. Again I must commend the writers – they know how to lay it on! I can’t wait for this weeks episode.
