Episode 5 – “…and found”

This was a Sun/Jin centric episode and focused on the events leading to their first meeting. Sun’s ultra-rich father decided that it was time that she married, and seeing as Sun rejected her suitors, they arranged to make use of a matchmaker. At the same time, Jin has started work as a doorman at the hotel that Sun is supposed to be meeting a prospective husband – Jae-Lee.

Jae-lee turns out to be a rather nice chap, but confides in Sun (in a later meeting) that he’s only seeing Sun to placate his parents. He’s met an American woman and plans to travel to the US and marry her in 6 months. Sun is quite disappointed, but wishes him well. Jin, meanwhile, had been ordered not to let “people like him” inside the hotel, but when a villager approaches with his little son who desperately needs the bathroom, Jin lets them in.

It’s actually all very sweet, but throughout it all, all I could think was how I really like the Korean version of the word “orange” – something like “Oran-jee ”.

Back on the island, Sun has realized that she’s lost her wedding ring and looks frantically for it. Jack offers his help, and tells Sun a story about how he lost his wedding ring. He ripped open garbage bags and even opened out the plumbing, and eventually had to go to a jeweler and make a duplicate. Sun sees that Jack has no wedding ring on and he laughingly says that it’s rattling around his sock drawer. Sun looks like she wants more information but Jack doesn’t offer any more.

Hurley is the next one to offer advice, and asks her to retrace her steps. Then he suggests that Vincent ate the ring, so they hang around Vincent for a while. Hurley tells Sun an amusing story about how his dog once ate loose coins. Sun tells Hurley that Vincent didn’t eat the ring. She wrecks her gardens looking for it and falls to her knees, sobbing. Which is how Locke finds her.

Sun tells him that she can’t recall ever seeing Locke angry, and he replies that he often was angry in the past. When she asks him why he doesn’t become angry anymore, he replies in his usual locke-ish manner, that he isn’t lost anymore. After she enquires as to how he found himself, Locke replies that he stopped looking – and that is the way anyone finds something that they are looking for.

Kate tries consoling Sun, but Sun angrily blurts out that Claire found the bottle of messges. Kate asks to see the bottle and Sun digs it up. Kate gets upset and starts looking through the messages, apparently looking for something. Sun stops her saying that the messages are private, and Kate confides that she never go to say goodbye to Sawyer. They find Sun’s wedding ring lying in the sand.

I love the brilliance of the writing on this show, and I love the brilliance of the episode titles each week. Coupled with the shows name, this week’s episode title “…and found” can be applied to so many of the situations here. Sun’s loosing and finding of her ring, Locke’s finding himself… brilliant!

Meanwhile, on the other side of the island, the rafties and the survivors of the tail section decide to journey to where our original survivors are. They gather food and water, and Michael takes off. They realize he’s gone looking for Walt, and Jin wants to go after him. Sawyer refuses to join him, but surprisingly, Mr Eko goes with Jin. Sawyer also sees that the group has a radio.

Sawyer, whose wound has still not been attended to, struggles to keep up with the group. When he stops for a while, Ana-Lucia offers him some water. She threatens to leave him behind and he says that he is their only chance of finding the campsite. He asks her if she is married, and after replying that she is not, asks him if he is married.

Jin and Mr Eko are tracking Michael through the jungle. Jin hears a noise and rushes towards the noise, only to stumble upon a bloodied corpse. Mr Eko informs him that the mans name was “Goodwin” and Jin asks “Others?” Damn those Others! They keep tracking Michael when Mr Eko suddenly hears something, and he and Jin hide.

They see a procession of people passing by the bushes they are hidden in – or rather, they are seen from the knee down only. These people are moving so silently and so stealthily and are muddied and dirty, and the very last one is carrying a teddy bear tied with some rope.

Later, they find Michael. Mr Eko tries to convince Michael to go back with them but Michael refuses. Jin tells Michael that he should go find Walt, and it seems like the three of them are now going off together to fin Walt.

Wow! I should really find another expression other than “wow” because I sense that it’s going to get old fast. Firstly, I must say I am somewhat disappointed in Sawyer for refusing to go with Jin to find Michael. It’s very Sawyer-like behaviour….but I was hoping…
Secondly, that bit of flirting with Ana-Lucia has given me a divine idea for an upcoming episode. And yes, say what you want, as far as I am concerned, it was a bit of flirting.

My divine idea is a showdown between Kate and Ana-Lucia! Ana-Lucia has already had a moment with Jack, and now she’s flirting with Sawyer. Kate’s not going to like it! Kate’s a strong woman who won’t take any crap from Ana-Lucia….so please, please, powers that be – please let Ana-Lucia kick Kate’s butt!

Anyway, I am quite shocked at how much English Jin suddenly knows. But it’s great to see him reach out to Michael like that. I think I like Mr Eko.  He seems like a nice enough guy!   I really don’t know what to say about those Others. I know I sat in front of the TV with my hand over my mouth in astonishment! Where did they all come from? Is it possible that they are the people who were originally in each of the hatches?
