Part 2 of this spectacular series starts with our adventure seekers returning to the beach after being chased by the unknown monster. After being asked what he was doing in the bathroom, Charlie replies that he was “puking” and that it was his “great contribution to the trip” and that he was a coward. Kate tells him that she’s really glad he came along and that he is not a coward.

Meanwhile, Walt is out looking for his dog and happens upon a set of handcuffs. Either there’s an escaped convict on the island, or someone’s really into kink. Shannon sunbathes, while Claire confides that her baby’s not moved since the crash.
Charlie, Jack and Kate return to the beach where a fight has broken out between Sawyer and Sayid. Sawyer’s convinced that Sayid blew up the plane in a terrorist act. Once the fight is broken, Sayid takes the broken receiver and tries to fix it. Hurley joins him and Sayid reveals that he was a “Communications officer” for the Republican Guard. “You’re ok” says Hurley to Sayid.
Sayid eventually fixes the transceiver but they need to get to higher ground to get a signal. Kate obviously decides to go along. Meanwhile, Boone and Shannon are bickering and Boone tells Shannon she’s “worthless”…so, in order to prove her worth, she decides to join Sayid and Kate. Boone tags along, as does Charlie, who I am sure probably just wants to try his luck with Shannon. Sawyer joins them as well.
Jack stays behind to operate on the man with the shrapnel sticking out of his side, and Hurley assists him… how willingly tho is another question, as Hurley is “not so good around blood, dude” Meanwhile, Walt befriends the enigmatic Locke. Michael is not too happy about this, but after some friction between the two, sets off to look for Vincent (Walt’s dog).
He encounters something in the jungle and asks “Vincent, that you buddy?” Yeah, like the dogs going to answer. When the grunting continues and it seems to be hot-footing it towards him, he finally turns and runs for it. As he nears the beach, he bursts in on a topless Sun who is cleaning up (having been ordered to do so by Jin earlier). Proclaiming that he “didn’t see anything” (yeah, right) he hands her a shirt and heads off.
Meanwhile, the group headed up by Sayid are bickering (lots of that going around), when they hear a roar. They all turn and run for it, except Sawyer who pulls out a gun and shoots the nearing creature…which turns out to be …. A polar bear!
After yet more bickering, Kate dismantles the gun.
*Flashback* Kate in cuffs sitting next to the marshal…who is the guy with the shrapnel*end flashback*
Finally, they pick up a signal, but discover that something is already broadcasting. It’s in French (stating that “it’s killed them all”), prompting one of my favourite lines in the show (from Charlie) “The French! The French are coming”
Sadly, it didn’t seem that anyone would be coming afterall; Sayid does some mental arithmetic and figures that the signal has been relaying for 16 years and 5 months.
More words of wisdom from Charlie as the show closes “Guys, where are we?”
Wow. What I truly liked about this was it so full of stereotypes… Sawyer’s automatic assumption that Sayid was a terrorist…. It’s so easy for us to stereotype these castaways…but just from the pilot episode alone, you could see that your opinions of each person were going to be challenged.
Sawyer’s nicknames for everyone tho, are priceless.
He calls Sayid (in this episode alone) “Buddy”, “Chief”, “Abdul” and “Al Jazar”
Sawyer also calls Jack “Doc”, and “Hero”; and Kate “Freckles” and Shannon “Sweetcheeks”
He also refers to Hurley as “Lardo”
Not to be outdone, Hurley calls Sawyer “a chain-smoking jackass” and Sayid refers to him as a “Redneck”.
