Coming up on Carte Blanche this Sunday (4 December 2011):

16 Days of Activism: 2011

It’s an international campaign for violence against women and, in South Africa, focuses on children too because of our high levels of abuse. But how serious are we?

The purpose of the Child Protection Register is, among other things, to have a record of those who deliberately abuse or neglect children. But more than 18 months since it became operational, only a handful of people are deemed unsuitable to work with children.

With an operating budget of R1.7-million and thousands of reported cases of ill-treatment, how did that happen? Carte Blanche finds out why our Register doesn’t reflect reality.

Producer: Carol Albertyn Christie
Presenter: Chantal Rutter
Journalist: Leila Dougan

Diamonds Are Not Forever

Namaqualand is one of the world’s top bio-diversity hotspots, on a par with the Amazon Rain Forest, but nearly a century of diamond mining has taken its toll.

Now De Beers is selling to a company which, communities say, has a poor environmental track record, and they fear that rehabilitation of the mined sections of this desert will be put on the back burner.

Carte Blanche visits the Namaqualand Diamond Mine, a restricted area for 86 years.

Producer: Liz Fish

Farmers Fighting Back

This week, a delegation from the civil rights group AfriForum attended a UN Human Rights Council meeting on Minority Issues in Geneva.

The purpose: to alert the international community to farm murders in South Africa, where only 35 000 commercial farmers remain on the land. Hundreds have been killed and others have left to pursue their passion and livelihoods elsewhere.

But in one small corner of the North-West province there hasn’t been a single farm attack in a decade. Carte Blanche went to find out what they’re doing right.

Producer: Eugene Botha
Presenter: Derek Watts

Learn to Lead

South Africa’s perceived leadership vacuum has been the focus of attention since Mandela’s giant footsteps faded into retirement. But at a rural school in KZN, a handful of pupils are encouraging their peers to become responsible leaders through setting high moral standards.

They are graduates of an academy that has helped them find their inner greatness. Carte Blanche discovers the secret of leadership.

Producer: Este de Klerk
Presenter: Devi Sankaree Govender

Carte Blanche is on M-Net on Sundays at 19h00.
