Coming up on Carte Blanche this Sunday (20 November 2011)

Bad Habits

The recent arrest of three nuns has rocked the sleepy rural town of New Hanover in KZN and prompted questions about the Department of Social Development in that province failing to act.

It’s called the Community of Jesus Compassion, but it’s alleged there was little compassion at this institution and that nuns in charge physically abused children in their care. Carte Blanche gets to the bottom of the allegations and finds out from the MEC what went wrong.

Producer: Backyard Productions
Presenter: Devi Sankaree Govender

The Russell Tribunal

A 94-year-old Jewish-French concentration camp survivor is spending his last years as he always has - fighting for freedom.

This time, Stéphane Hessel is doing it as part of the Russell Tribunal on Palestine, which recently sat in Cape Town. But his presence here is also to tell today’s younger generation to open their eyes and ears and fight for a more equitable world.

Carte Blanche sits down with Stéphane Hessel.

Producer: Angus Begg
Journalist: Susan Comrie

Printing in Limpopo

Julius Malema may be out in the cold, but investigations into his alleged wealth are hotting up. The Public Protector’s office is probing claims of irregular tenders awarded by the Limpopo government to companies linked to the former ANCYL president.

Limpopo is well-known for manipulation of tenders and, in this story, we investigate the province’s apparent insatiable need for over-priced photocopiers and digital printers.

Tsunami II

Few can forget the images of huge tsunami waves battering ships and laying parts of northern Japan to waste in March this year. Eight months on, residents are still living with the aftermath of that powerful earthquake and picking up the pieces has been slow. Carte Blanche re-visited Natori city, one of the worst-hit areas.

Producer: Peter Groenewald
Presenter: Derek Watts

Carte Blanche is on M-Net on Sundays at 19h00.
