On Carte Blanche this Sunday (21 February 2010):

Potholes

A KwaZulu-Natal chef is suing the Department of Transport after an accident that led to the amputation of her forearm. The cause of the crash? A pothole. She is one of many road users who’ve had enough of our hazardous road surfaces, especially when millions have been spent on a remote road near Transport Minister Sbu Ndebele’s country residence. Carte Blanche goes pothole-hunting.

Presenter: Bongani Bingwa
Producer: Nguni Productions
Journalists: Wynand Grobler & Leila Dougan

Mandela Bay

Coega and all its promises of development should’ve opened up exciting new projects for the Port Elizabeth beachfront and harbour. Instead planners in South Africa’s second oldest city and the commercial capital of the Eastern Cape say the harbour sits on a ticking time-bomb that’s delaying development.

It’s an oil storage facility, similar to the one at Buncefield that caused the biggest explosion in peacetime Europe five years ago. Carte Blanche travels to Mandela Bay for a health, wealth and safety check.

Presenter: Annika Larsen
Producer: Angus Begg
Journalist: Xoli Matomela

Drought

A critical water shortage in the eastern and southern Cape has municipalities wracking their collective brains for solutions. Now the small town of Sedgefield has turned to the planet’s largest water source - the sea. It’s called reverse osmosis desalination technology and successfully provides more than the average water needs of the town. Carte Blanche knocks back a glass.

Presenter: Devi Sankaree Govender
Producer: Deon Roux

Gautrain III

Years in the making, it will hopefully provide the answer to Gauteng’s transport nightmares. But what about safety, and will the Gautrain be ready for the World Cup? Just how convenient will travel be once Africa’s biggest project is up and running? Carte Blanche takes you on a ride.

Presenter: Derek Watts
Producer: Este de Klerk
Journalist: Peter Griffiths

Carte Blanche is on M-Net on Sundays at 19h00.
