Captial Crime

The Gauteng Aggravated Robbery Strategy started three months ago, aiming to reduce violent crime in South Africa’s economic heartland.

As 2008 draws to a close, Safety & Security MEC Firoz Cachalia says things are improving. But try telling that to the family of a Laudium woman brutally murdered in her home this week, or the young sons of Henk Albertyn, shot dead on his small-holding in Pretoria east on Tuesday, or the Van Rensburg family who’ve had four armed robberies in the past year.

Carte Blanche looks at the upsurge in armed robbery in the capital.

Drunk

We’re coming to that time of year again, when drivers seem to think the festive spirit holds no bars behind the driving wheel. With only five per cent of drunk driving cases ending up in prosecution, it’s no wonder South African drivers are so relaxed about their boozing. But they may be in for sharp wake-up call, thanks to a new testing system that gives an instant reading on breath alcohol levels, with no need for blood tests. Carte Blanche went on a binge.

Gautrain
