  Carte Blanche: 23 October 2008
On Sunday's Carte Blanche, 23 November 2008:

Captial Crime

The Gauteng Aggravated Robbery Strategy started three months ago, aiming to reduce violent crime in South Africa’s economic heartland.

As 2008 draws to a close, Safety & Security MEC Firoz Cachalia says things are improving. But try telling that to the family of a Laudium woman brutally murdered in her home this week, or the young sons of Henk Albertyn, shot dead on his small-holding in Pretoria east on Tuesday, or the Van Rensburg family who’ve had four armed robberies in the past year.

Carte Blanche looks at the upsurge in armed robbery in the capital.

Drunk

We’re coming to that time of year again, when drivers seem to think the festive spirit holds no bars behind the driving wheel. With only five per cent of drunk driving cases ending up in prosecution, it’s no wonder South African drivers are so relaxed about their boozing. But they may be in for sharp wake-up call, thanks to a new testing system that gives an instant reading on breath alcohol levels, with no need for blood tests. Carte Blanche went on a binge.

Gautrain

There are allegations of fraud and it’s caused traffic chaos, power problems and noise pollution, but it’s set to revolutionize city life. Seen as a ray of hope to everyone stuck on the N1 between Jo’burg and Pretoria every morning, the Gautrain Rapid Rail link promises to rival transport systems worldwide. Carte Blanche goes underground to see the linking tunnels and cutting edge technology.

Presenter: Bongani Bingwa

Dancing On the Ceiling

If you were growing up in the heyday of the early to mid eighties, Lionel Richie was a household name. His love songs simply refuse to die, and even sophisticated music fans own up to a soft spot for the man who brought us “Ballerina Girl, Say You Say Me, Endless Love and All Night Long”. He’s in SA and Carte Blanche catches up with him.

Presenter: Devi Sankaree Govender
Producer: Carmen Langston
