Heroes 1x23 - How To Stop An Exploding Man

DL collapses after killing Linderman. Niki helps him up as a guard starts pounding on the door. DL protests that he’s too weak, but Niki convinces him that he’s able to get them out of the office, and he phases the two of them through the wall as the guards enter.

In Molly’s room, HRG and Mohinder continue their standoff. As Matt comes do, Molly recognises him. Matt takes charge, telling Molly that no one is going to hurt her, and both Mohinder and HRG lower their guns.

Hiro’s father tries to convince him not go after Ando, but Hiro is adamant. His father hands him a sword, and Hiro teleports away.

Sylar paints while in a trance and as he paints, images flicker across his eyes. He ends up painting a picture of himself and Peter facing each other in Kirby Plaza. Coming out of the trance, he recognizes Peter and reacts angrily, slicing another painting in two.

Claire phones HRG and tells him that Sylar has killed Ted. HRG asks to speak to Peter, and tells him that he’s now probably the only person who can stop Sylar. He says that they have a tracking system that they’re trying to fix and that he’ll let Peter know Sylar’s location as soon as he can.

Peter and Claire pull into a parking garage where Nathan is waiting. Claire is upset by this as Peter had told her that he wouldn’t contact Nathan. While Peter is talking to Nathan, Claire tries to get away but runs into Angela.

Peter tries to convince Nathan to help him, but overhears Nathan’s thoughts saying that there’s nothing Peter can do to stop the bomb and that everyone will die. Peter realises that Claire was right not to trust Nathan, and when he can’t find her in the car he runs off, turning invisible in the process.

He becomes invisible again outside the garage and his hands start glowing. He fights to bring his power under control and blacks out in the process.

Molly states that her power is working again. When asked, she says that she can find anyone except someone who is worse than Sylar because when she think about him, he can see her.

I have no idea who this person could be, as it certainly doesn’t seem to fit any of the characters we’ve seen before. My guess is that the person Molly’s referring to is a new villain they’re setting up for the second season.

Molly finds Sylar’s location on a map, and HRG identifies it as Isaac’s apartment. He phone Claire in order to relay the information to Peter.

Claire’s phone is answered by Angela, and she and HRG argue for a while before she hands the phone over to Claire. HRG tells Claire that she should go with Angela and Nathan and get out of the city.

After he’s finished speaking to Claire, HRG tells Matt that their new priority is to find Peter. Matt doesn’t agree, saying that he’s going after Sylar, as he’s a cop and Sylar’s a bad guy. That’s not the smartest of decisions by Matt – hasn’t he ever heard of the term back-up?

Peter finds himself in a dream sequence, reliving the day he started looking after Charles, Simone’s father. He sees himself speaking to Charles and then to Simone, who offers to show him around.

After Simone and Past Peter have disappeared, Angela appears with some tea. She and Charles talk about the bomb that is going to go off and disagree about which brother will save the day, with Angela backing Nathan and Charles Peter. After Angela has left, Charles turns to Present Peter, saying that he knows he’s there.

Ando enters Isaac’s apartment and, as is to be expected, is completely ineffectual against Sylar. Sylar holds Ando up against a wall and begins cutting his throat with telekinesis, clearly not wanting to eat Ando’s brain.

Hiro arrives before Ando can be seriously injured. Sylar tries to play up Hiro’s doubt about his power by asking if Hiro will be able to stop time before Sylar cuts off Ando’s head. Hiro doesn’t fall for it, and is able to teleport himself and Ando away.

Niki, having left a weak DL behind, finds the apartment where Micah has been kept. She enters it and comes face to face with Jessica. Jessica points out Micah lying on the floor and says that DL and Micah are both gone because Niki was weak, and then kicks Niki in the face.

Matt enters Isaac’s apartment but doesn’t find anyone there. He sees the painting of Sylar and Peter in Kirby Plaza and relays this information to Mohinder. Mohinder starts packing, telling Molly that they need to leave because Sylar is on his way, and Molly says that he’s already there.

Nathan, Angela and Claire enter Nathan’s office where they plan to wait for the helicopter which will take them out of New York. Claire tries to convince Nathan and Angela to change their minds and help Peter, and when that doesn’t happen, she jumps out of the window, landing on the ground below. As Nathan and Angela watch, she gets up and runs off.

Jessica sends Niki flying across the room where she hits a mirror which breaks. Looking into one of the shards, Niki sees Jessica who tells her that she’s not the one who’s attacking Niki.

The Jessica who’s been attacking Niki walks over, and Niki punches her, having clearly decided to fight back. It’s “Jessica’s” turn to go flying, and she winds up being knocked out, which results in her changing back to her true form, which is that of Candice. The Micah who was lying on the floor disappears and Niki discovers that Micah is alive, having been shut in a closet by Candice.

Mohinder and Molly come across an injured DL. While Mohinder attends to him, Molly tries a nearby lift, which doesn’t work.

Ando and Hiro appear back at Yamagoto Industries, and no one takes any notice of them appearing out of nowhere. If this sort of thing is an everyday occurrence then it must be a really cool place to work.

Hiro tells Ando that he must finish the journey on his own. He thanks Ando for showing him what bravery was before teleporting back to America.

In the dream sequence, Charles speaks to Peter and tells him that he needed to hear the truth before he could save the world. When Peter asks why it was him, Charles says that there always has to be one who’s good, and that in the end all that’s important is love, and Peter’s heart has the ability to love unconditionally.

Peter is woken up by HRG who has found him with Molly’s help. HRG offers to accompany Peter to his showdown with Sylar, saying that he’s a pretty good shot.

As they’re about to leave, HRG tells Peter that his first name is Noah. I don’t know if this was supposed to be some sort of big reveal, but if it was I don’t see how it’s of any significance. The only Noah I’m aware of is the Biblical one, and I can’t think of any way in which the story of the flood could tie into Heroes.

Molly hears guards approaching, while at the same time Niki and Micah arrive. Micah uses his power to get the lift working, and the five of them make their escape.

Peter and HRG arrive at Kirby Plaza. They don’t see Sylar anywhere, and Peter says that that must mean that he’s hiding in plain site. At that point Sylar appears behind HRG and sends him flying across the Plaza where he hits a building.

Sylar’s sudden appearance suggests that he may have stolen Claude’s power, but I’m not so sure about that. There was no fading in effect like we’ve seen with Peter and Claude – Sylar was just there.

It could be that he’s stolen the power to camouflage himself in some way. The power could have the ability to make people not notice him unless he wants them to. So while it’s not quite invisibility, it ends up having a similar effect.

Sylar uses his telekinesis choke Peter. Matt arrives and fires his gun at Sylar, but Sylar stops the bullets in mid-air and sends them back towards Matt, hitting him in the chest.

Sylar uses his power to pick up a parking meter and hits Peter with it. For some reason he holds it and swings it at Peter rather than using to power to control it.

This enables Niki, who has arrived on the Plaza with DL, Micah, Mohinder and Molly, to grab the parking meter out of Sylar’s hand and hit him with it. Somehow she’s identified Peter as the good guy and Sylar as the bad guy, despite never having met either of them before.

Micah calls out to Niki that DL needs her help, and Peter tells her to go back to her family. He punches Sylar several times, but then his hands start glowing.

Sylar finds this very amusing and says that it turns out that he’s the hero and Peter the villain. Just then Hiro appears and stabs Sylar.

Peter tells Hiro to kill him as that’s the only way to stop this. Before Hiro can do anything Sylar, who is not dead yet, uses his power to sent Hiro flying towards a building but before he hits it, he teleports away. Sylar collapses and images flash across his eyes like they did earlier, finishing with one showing him (apparently) dead.

Peter continues to glow, and HRG struggles to raise his gun. At that point Claire arrives and takes the gun from him.

She walks towards Peter and points the gun at him. She’s reluctant to shoot him, but Peter says that there’s no other way.

At that point Nathan arrives, landing next to Peter. I wasn’t that surprised by his appearance, as earlier on in the series I’d predicted that he’d be an ass initially, but eventually come to his senses and use his power.

Nathan and Peter fly off together and after a while, there’s a big explosion in the sky, far enough away not to affect New York. Peter and Nathan don’t return, so there’s no indication as to whether either of them survived or not without looking at the cast list for Season Two.

An ambulance arrives and takes Matt away. HRG says to Claire that they should go home, and when she says that their home has burned down, he replies that home is wherever their family is together.

The scene closes with a shot of plaza showing a blood trail running from where Sylar fell to a manhole cover which is now open. So Sylar’s clearly not dead.

But that’s not the end of the episode. We get a final seen featuring Hiro, who falls from the sky and lands in a grassy field.

As he gets to his feet, a group of riders approach. They’re Japanese warriors, armed and wearing armour.

I thought this might mean that it turns out that Hiro becomes Takezo Kensei, which would have been an interesting twist, but it’s not the case. Another rider appears, this one carrying a banner with the symbol on it, and he’s presumably Kensei.

Before anything else can happen, an eclipse begins, like the one in the first episode. The eclipse continues until the sun is completely covered, and the episode ends.

Yamagato Industries is run by Mr Sulu himself. Figures the employees would be too cool to be fazed by minor things like people appearing out of nowhere carrying Samurai swords.

Ahh guys this is probably the best show on Mzantsi TV right now and I'm already on episode 7 of season 2 and it's even better. I wonder how long will SA viewers have to wait for the second season.
