We have been tuned to biggie for almost 3 months, 81 days to be exact. We have screamed at the TV, posted weird posts on the biggie web, nastily attacked each other, the housemates, countries and soon it will all end.
I have been a fan of the Big Brother concept or reality TV from BBSA. I initially watched and could not understand the whole idea. Why watch people 24 hours a day? Who in their right mind thinks this show will survive? Except shower hour, I missed a lot of BBSA. It was fascinating to watch people do stuff, with you watching. Not hiding anything. At that time, everyone washed naked. They were not really shy to show it off, or they did not seem like they wanted to hide anything.
Then, Big Brother Africa started and I was hooked. I watched 24/7, missed work most days and was generally half asleep during the day. It was amazing to watch all these people from different backgrounds, situations, accents and 12 countries interact with each other. No xenophobia. Just being together - peacefully – and learning from each other. The drama for the viewers then was “Why is there only one white person?” Yes, The Namibian dude whose name escapes me now was white; he was also attached to his guitar like Code. South African’s were not happy that Abby was the representative because she started a thing with Gaetano, was loud (talking or laughing) and insisted on calling “Big Brother” biggie. She had an almost similar personality as Tatiana. She was touchy with everyone. Gaetano and Abby did the nasty and we all saw…
Biggie at that time was interactive. You could choose which room to look at! That was the best thing because we were not subjected to Maureen talking to herself and having no choice but to change channels! You could just click on the ok button and you had a choice of four cameras to watch and listen! You know I was only listening to Abby and Gaetano or Tapuwa. That was amazing and should be brought back!
Who could forget Tapuwa? Oh Lord! She was the Zimbabwean Representative – she gossiped and was a little freaky almost like Maureen. She had a major crush on the Namib dude and would do outlandish stuff when drunk. She was the first biggie contestant that washed with her swimsuit! The only time we saw her naked was when she drunkenly ran across the yard after a dare from the housemates. I loved Tapuwa… yes, I supported her because she always caused chaos in the house. She was there whenever there was an argument. She played all of them… At some point no-one spoke to her in the house.
The Ofunneka of that time was Cherise, the eventual winner. She cleaned, soothed egos, cooked, killed flies – basically mothered everyone! She won. I can’t remember what she did that made her be endeared to people but yah, she won!
I had serious issues with the technical sound of BB Nigeria. I could not hear anything unless my volume was fully on! So Tashi and I quit watching it! My ears were not worth the sacrifice of watching that biggie. I was glad that Brown Sugar persisted because she kept me in the loop.
I wonder what happens to the housemates after the hype? The first couple of months everyone screams when they recognize you… and then one day you are just a regular person. No-one cares who you are and what you did. What happens to your ego? To your need to be known?
Wouldn’t it be great if we have an All-stars BBA? Yep, bring all the BBA housemates that were funny, fun, funky and the forgetful ones back for a season! I would love to see Tapuwa, White Namibian dude, Cherise, Ofunneka, Maureen, Justice, Jeff, Meryl, Abby and Gaetano back for an all stars season.
I am weaning myself from the end of this BBA. It will soon end and we will need to go back to our normal TV schedules…
So, peeps, let’s reminisce about those days.
Tell us
When did you start watching?
What made you watch?
Who you liked and why?
If you know, what happened to those that left?
What kind of biggie would you like the next one to be?
