OK, we all know that as much as most of us are addicted to Generations, IT IS BORING!! Period! The storyline is crap, that’s if there is a story line at all! I’m thinking their actors are just told to stand in front of the camera and get creative! Say anything abafuna okuyitsho noba kanjani!

Kodwa xa ujonga at whats been happening in Generation in the past two years maybe you would understand why this is happening: Generations is an advertising medium that’s it! You don’t agree with me? OK, I started noticing this during their PEP campaign. It was just clear that they were promoting PEP’s new mission statement and yes, it’s not like they were hiding this! And recently Queen has been busy bleksemming her credit card , by blankets for Khaphela’s Church from PEP!!!

Now they have been busy advertising the HTC phone through the Smart Gym storyline! Is it a story line? I mean really now! Don’t you think they are over doing it??

I think basiqhela kakubi! And there must be no Commercial Breaks when Generations is being aired because it is a LONG PEP COMMERCIAL ON ITS OWN!!! DAMMIT!!

PEP must find new ways to advertise their brand- our Movie industry is so Desperate for that money!!!

Savage!

I think these companies like PEP pay in order to be mentioned in Generations so Gene is making money out of it as well. I'm not sure about HTC though because I don't remember the brand being mentioned explicitly in the soap I think it's Gene trying to "spice things up"

Generations does seem to be an advertising medium for there companies, like Pep.

"I'm not sure about HTC though because I don't remember the brand being mentioned explicitly in the soap I think it's Gene trying to "spice things up"
@ Golden Star, tell me u are joking, don't u remember the day when that Smart  Gym guy showed US the HTC phone and then Sbudah and Khaphela were all excited about it's "amazing features" (I even remember Sbu saying amezing fictas), then a couple of days later the Smart Gym guy gave them their own HTC phones, now is that not advertising?????

Watz wrong with advertising when they making money?

Miss K
29 Jul 2008 06:32

Yes Generubish is making extra money by advertising but does it really have to be in our faces like that?? Most sopies do the same but its done in a very creative way so thats its not so obvious. But what do u expect from Generubish, yonke into ibaxiwe (everything is exaggerated)!!

amezing fictas - LOL NONNY!
Mara I guess generations has to pay the bills, mara that pep one was a bit unrealistic. The clothes queen wears are nowhere near pep material, but she was on of the one's going on and on about it.

I dont think it's an issue. Its guerilla tactics. Normal Marketing. We do that all the time.

Just like Rhythm City being Served Steamy Hot By Ricoffy.

Renegade
29 Jul 2008 07:08

I think if it's not exaggerated, so much so that we don't even notice it, then it defeats the purpose of advertising. Advertising is not meant to be subtle, it's meant to be noticeable.
I must say, I can't think of any advertising done on Isidingo, but I know 7de Laan did the Boerewors, RC did motorola and now ricoffy,

amezing fictas Hay' maan Nonny my stomach hurts now from all the laughing.
What I'm trying to say is we know those are HTCs but no one says it outright in Gene unlike Pep where they would say that I bought this and that from Pep

Molilo
29 Jul 2008 07:20

Muvhango and 7de laan advertise Clover, from ur KRUSH, Milk, IceTea, water etc

carino
29 Jul 2008 07:23

Thing is, it has to be done..... That is actually some of the money used to run the programme. Pay actors/crew + feed them... Every project needs advertisers and sponsors....

Miss K
29 Jul 2008 07:25

Ok Rene and Simmone i hear u guys. So maybe they shud make the storyines around the adverts a bit more interesting then???

carino
29 Jul 2008 07:27

What I'm trying to say is we know those are HTCs but no one says it outright in Gene unlike Pep where they would say that I bought this and that from Pep

7de Laan runs a whole Shoprite Boerewors Competition. Basically... Shoprite runs the whole campaign on 7de Laan.

carino
29 Jul 2008 07:28

Yes Miss K.... that's whats missing...

Simmone
29 Jul 2008 07:34

@ Miss K Exactly, Some of the actors themselves seem to be trying to much to sell the product rather than acting out a scene. Some scenes become so blatantly the advert that you end not knowing how it fits into the storyline. Like the Converse advert in Generations

carino
29 Jul 2008 07:36

Its the Director thats getting it wrong.

Hlehle
29 Jul 2008 07:49

I dnt see anything wrong there and remember that on genereation they also have i ad agency which is New Horisons. As for ezinye i soapies they shud go for it if its bringing in the money. I would also like to say a shout out to the ffl ppl Carino, Simmone, andi, rene. molilo,Cande and everyone else who knows me.

nice
29 Jul 2008 07:58

and now it is inpulse and Karabo,

But I think Shuga mentioned this when she did her first review of Destiny. genarations is not about any storyline, "it is just a cash cow for the SABC"...............not my words (dont want to be sued for plagiarism now)

Savage
29 Jul 2008 08:03

OK fine they have to make money somehow- but I think they are being greedy becoz they still charge other companies LOTS OF CASH if they want their commercials to be aired between 8:00 and 8:30!

Soapies were meant to entertain people- NOT BORE THEM WITH ADVERTS!!!

Savage
29 Jul 2008 08:06

Oh by the way- do you still remember when they were advertising ermm Soft'n Free?? some hair product!!

Trixy 145

Advertising Medium...that what generations is lately.

tizoz
29 Jul 2008 11:55

If you understand the history of Television you will realise that there is nothing wrong with what Generations is doing.

When Soap operas started (a gazillion years ago) they were sponsored by soap producing companies hence they were named Soap Opera's, I think the first sponsor was Lux if I am not mistaken. They targeted housewives and product placement was on your face.

If the company brings in money I dont really see what is wrong with it. Look at RC advertising 99 FM..... i mean WTF? and the 99 Magazine isn't that direct advertising? You tell me. at least Generations is raking in the moola while they are struggling with the storyline.

RC also advertised Motorolla hectically they all had to use motorolla phones....

Muvhango --- KRUSH Juice..............Oh I hate it when I see everybody krushing quench with Krush.

Why Karabo is promoting impulse instead of promoting her ????????? forgot it's name, its very misleading. Kanti aphela nini ama Pendants, seriously mina ngikhathele ile Advert.

And answer me, What was Nomasonto promoting with her weave? Yho phela half of SA women bought that weave, I also have one I use to rock it at College.

@ Rene.........<<<<<<<<mara that pep one was a bit unrealistic. The clothes queen wears are nowhere near pep material>>>>>>>>>> Gal I saw the red shirt at PEP in Carlton Centre, but it's very ugly on those hangers and on Queens body it's the opposite.

Cande
29 Jul 2008 13:23

Bridgette is curvelicious, there goes the impulse advert again

30 Jul 2008 07:40

I think Generation is a soapie, Mzansi's favourate soapie i can say,Thousands of South Africans watch this soapie more than any other soapie...So companies like PEP  took that as an advantage.thats why now its an Advertising medium.

now its impules wats next????????

12 Aug 2008 06:49

Hay Futshek!!! maan Generations ,,,,,,,, are they desperate or what, first they must do recast, Grace, Bridgette, Palesa and the smart Gym thing can take it out its really i mean getting to my head .GENERATIONS PLEASE GET A LIFE.........

Pix
13 Aug 2008 19:01

Hey Converse is also being currently marketed by that Smart Guy Gym...that's their uniform...but it is befitting as the companies and characters are all caught up in media...Advertising,Marketing and Journalism so yeah it can be an ad agency for most of the real big companies, their story is not broad enough, that's everyone gets to go around and date everyone...hey doesn't that sound like The Bold and The Beautiful...companies are all about fashion, small cast and incest and disgusting gestures take place all the time with Brooke dating the entire family but not Stephanie as yet...?

Heard someone mention RC, come on in RC they don't include it in the story line. They were once sponsored by Shoprite and we didn't hear Mamokete saying she is going to Shoprite to get some flour for her magwinya did we? Most soaps just display the product and sometimes the sponsor gets to be first advert when they go to an ad break.

Is it that whats being advertised are products we dont necessarily relate to or desire? For instance if Queen or Karabo or Ntombi were purchsed a new Nine West Bag or a Pair of Jimmy Chu's would we have such negative attitudes towards TV advertising?

Why dont we also compain that soapies also people also use their acting careers to start singing careers & so they use soapies to advertise themselves? Is it maybe because we like these personalities or their music?

Guys whats it with the power save.co.za people who choose the worst moment to air their commercial at the bottom of the screen and end up  covering the subtitles. clearly not all of us comprehend xhosa, zulu, , infact not all of us are South African, for isntance Im East African and I watch the show in real time every day, so poweralert.co.za ends up covering the  english subtitles (at the most crucial time)- the end of the episode....
