Top 10 actresses of our time

We watch them everyday on our screens. They captivate us with their exhilarating and most remarkable performances. So real they are, one forgets about the ordinary; these are women who deliver outstanding acting and their presence leave your tongue wagging and dripping for more action. I have made it my mission to put together a list of 10 most outstanding South African actresses (according to me, that is) ):

1. Nambitha Mpumlwana
Now, this is one woman I think of when pondering about the topic at hand. Nambitha has always delivered flawless acting from the time she played a school headmaster in Yizo Yizo. She has played diverse roles and with each one she shines even greater than the last.

She currently plays the powerful Mawande Memela on Generations, a fearless and potent woman of virtue and class. And she brilliantly and effortlessly puts me on the edge on my seat every night, you just want to sob uncontrollably at her performance.

2. Nthati Moshesh
Right here we have the most incredible and astonishing talent. Her acting commands attention and she draws you into her character. She doesn’t only portray the character BUT she becomes the character. You just want to scream “Viva” when she graces the screen. She’s the type that makes one leave a burning pot in the kitchen when her scene is playing. She currently plays Morongoe in Scandal and boy oh boy, does she “BRING IT”.

3. Moshidi Motshegwa
This is an amazing actress, incredible in many ways and she is what I call the rare type. She can be given a boring and mellow role but she will turn it into something you think of when someone drops the name of the show. She can mould herself into anything and the realism in her work only makes me rank her on the same level as Hollywood actress such as Angela Basset. Moshidi currently potrays an obsessed, mentally unstable and psychotic Naomi on Rhythm City and she does that with ease and flair.

4. Sonia Sedibe
When you talk about a sexy, sultry, sassy and faultless actress, then Sonia Sedibe comes to mind. This is one woman who’s got stage presence that would keep the worst heathens awake in a play about Jesus. Her acting is outstanding and “ON POINT” and she’s the type who would over-power and take over the scene.

Her smile alone makes one weak at the knees and you just cannot get enough of her strong acting abilities. She is the type that isn’t afraid of a challenge. Simply put, this is one actress who excels. She presently plays Ntombi Dlomo in Generations where I honestly feel like she is rather under-used.

Sonia Sedibe Opinion Ramp

5. Michelle Botes
Elegant, enchanting, implausible and riveting are just some of the words to define this actress. This woman is FIRE. She is one who will give you all facial expressions that are worthy of each cent you pay for that TV License. She is varied and believable, she makes you forget about the other people in the room. I’ve only seen her in Isidingo as the scheming, seductive and sneaky Cherel De Villiers and she is without any doubt gorgeous and absolutely talented.

Michelle Botes

6. Brenda Nqxoli
Nothing can ever begin to describe the raw talent this woman exudes. She is the type that makes you rape the replay button watching her scenes over and over and over again. She has the x-factor and she would give a lot of Hollywood actresses a run for their money. She is simply hardcore and her ability to deliver immense performances is indisputable. Brenda is a rare gem. Her latest remarkable work was when she played the tough, athletic and macho Vuyo in Home Affairs.

Brenda Opinion Ramp

7. Lele Ledwaba
Lele is one diverse actress who would play anything from a dumb blonde to a powerful career woman. She has done it all; you don’t need to give her a second sight to believe her. She is versatile and has speaks with eloquence, the emotions she puts in her acting and the control she has on her work makes one wonder how she does it. She is extraordinary and exceptional. Her captivating and natural personality shines distinctly and electrifyingly grows with every character she tackles. Lele is currently playing the blonde and hilarious Pinky on Stokvel. (can I hear a lol?)

Lele Ledwaba Opinion Ramp

8. Xolile Tshabalala
This is one strong and most brilliant actress, if she was to enter class act, they would immediately withdraw the show and give her the gig on the spot. She is versatile, unbeatable and comes out tops in anything she does. The excitement she brings in her work would make one scream in ecstasy. She is beautiful and undeniably Hollywood material. She is in a league of her own and her talent is out of this world. I personally rank her in the lines of Vanessa Williams and Vivica A. Fox. RRrrrrrhhhhh *ROARS*

9. Linda Sokhulu
She is one actress who came to conquer and she does just that. Whenever anyone mentions Oscar-deserving actresses, you can proudly shout Linda’s name. She has the verve and drive that would make her score big roles in Hollywood. She doesn’t have to scream for you to realize her potential. She is a commanding diva on stage and she knows her ish! I respect her and she is gonna continue to dish even more great acting in future. Linda currently plays the sexy Nikiwe in Isidingo.

Linda Sokhulu Opinion Ramp

10. Connie Ferguson
Here we have one woman whom we’ve come to adore, personally I put her in the 10th spot ‘cause she isn’t really that GREAT, but I will give it to her, her days on Generations scored her lots of brownies. Her acting is awesome; when she had challenging story lines she delivered A+ performances. I just cannot see her as anyone but Karabo. Truth is she has mastered acting through her Generations role. Connie currently stars alongside her husband on The Wild.

The breath-taking Connie Ferguson

This is my top 10 which I think has set the bar, I’m sure many actresses came into your mind when you went through the list, let’s hear them. A list of the top 10 actors is coming soon…

Almost perfect list. I would Replace Connie Ferguson with Busi Lurayi (sp). Connie is an average actress who always get comfortable roles. Even Sonia Sedibe is a better actress than her. ...... Busi, she is just dynamite!.

The White Gurl and Xolile Tshabalala equally Tazz ... BTW I had a massive crush on Xolile's Eyes ... Didn't care for the rest of her ... Her eyes did everything everything else could try to do better without blinking .. To / for me !!! Eish ... Yep .. them eyes did everything ! Nthati is next tier below the two ... (and that is not because I kissed her at a social 28 / 29 years ago) ... she happens to be a great actress also ... the rest are rather forgetable in my opinion.

i fully concur with the list, its always a challenge to narow down to 10 because there is soo many talented actresses in SA.
I think Connie is under rated actually, she pulled off sum amazing scenes in Generations but bcoz Karabo's character was not that challenging on a daily episode she was not able to showcase her abilities more often.
Leaving Generations was a wise move coz now we can see more of other dynamics of the actress.I just wish she didn't go straight into another soapie. Its exactli wat is happeneing to Sonia in Generations. Her character is becoming redudant n soon people will start doubting her acting abilities yet she is a brilliant actress. The directors and storylines of Generations can kill an actress's talent nje.

21 Nov 2011 22:51

Connie and Sonia are not good actresses period! Don't blame writers with everything. Karabo had some amazing storylines and she just didn't pull them well. Sonia can only play angry nothing else - I would give her an Oscar for that. But she is not a full on actress who can tackle everything. I would put Busi Lrayi there - I cannot believe you can put Sonia before Cherel (Michelle Botes), now that is plain RIDICULOUS, like reallly? Really? A good actress can even play a bad storyline, Nthati for example they've given her so many bad storylines on Scandal but she still shines, a story is a tool but a proper good actress must shine in everything. Right now on Isidingo they've turned Cherel into a pathetic character, not the Chrel we know, but DAMN, Michelle Botes still bring it even in those lame storylines. So please, don't blame Generations for Sonia and Connie's lack of talent. II can site so many examples even internationally, yes a story has to be good but it does nothing if you're a bad actress or actor. Some bad actors had gotten good stories but they fade, why, lack of talent, nothing. This thing of blaming writers and producers is like soccer fans who say fire the coach - Why the *bleep!* are the soccer players not scoring? Are they blind not to see the poles? Sometmes don't be taken by the hype and the fame and beautiful faces, some of the actresses and actors just don't bring it

nqadu

Connie has gone worse on The Wild - so lame, I try to watch but I fall asleep all the time when watching their omnibus on Saturday - lame. Now wonder she's the face of Lewis now - Do I spell LAME?

you must watch 90 plein street with xolile tshabalala, thandiwe msomi and vathiswa ndara on sabc 2! NOW THATS WHAT  I CALL GREAT ACTING! as for isidingo at the moment, you would swear they swapped writers with generations.

22 Nov 2011 07:59

I agree Vatiswa Ndara should be replacing Connie. Sonia and Connie please - just beautiful faces that's all. Isidingo really you're right, maybe they've hired that fired Generations headwriter because whoever is on Gen now is doing a good job.

22 Nov 2011 08:33

Keketso Semoko, Busi Lurayi,Terry Pheto and Lerato Mvelase should be there somewhere,, or the list shouldev been the top 15 coz we've got talent here in Mzantsi.

As much as you guys say Nambitha is a good actress, everytime i watch her i kinda cringe at her facial expressions, she exaggerates and it always gets my back up...i have never watched any of her previous works but in generations she didnt live up to the hype that preceded her coming in, she is too fake for me, she doesnt flow in her character like how Brenda did in Home Affairs or Busi Lurayi in Sokhulu and Partners, it was almost real #that'sjustme#

promisez
22 Nov 2011 08:39

I agrreee  with the list totaly,,

but yall know it will be unfair to ignore connie just nje, whats she did on gen cant go on waste, so she gets that lil piece of cake

Good article: and yes we have some extra ordinary actresses in this country and they are capable of doing so much more given the chance and a much better platform and with film makers producing more and more of our stories.

I do have to agree though, as much as I am a Connie and a Sonia fan, yes they are fine actresses. But there are some actresses that should be here instead of them like Warona Seane who plays Dineo in 90 Plein Street. Motshabi Tyelele, she played Thando is Subarban Bliss and was Sophie in Generations when Mandla was still on Generations.

As much as you guys say Nambitha is a good actress, everytime i watch her i kinda cringe at her facial expressions, she exaggerates and it always gets my back up...............i thought im the only 1 seeing that...and as much as people praises her acting i always try and see that special thing ppl are talking about mara.............. the list is very gud and i like Moshidi bathong

zam.ngcobo
22 Nov 2011 09:06

As much as I love Connie I have to admit that she's not a great actress ,there is only one scene that she played to the tea on Generations and that was when she had a miscarage (pergnant with Sbusiso's child) and only to find out later ukuthi the reason she played it so well was becausae she was going through it in real life at the time ..........................So basically Connie is just an average actrees nothing more .

I would say Sonia is a better  actress then Connie kodwa naye she's just an average actress ........

Mitchelle Botes and Brenda Ngxoli Hhayibo ??? Taz they are  no where near being  good actresses . I say this because whenever I see Brenda play a different role I see Vuyo same goes for Michelle Botes ,it doesnt matter what role she plays cos I still see her as Cherel
 Kanti what makes a Great/Dynamic actress ?
For me it is someone who excells in her role as well as any other role and thats is a DIVERSE ACTRESS !
Someone who can pull off 5 different characters with PERFECTION .
And Yes Samkelo Ndlovu is young but she's super talented .

mbulela
22 Nov 2011 09:17

Taz, your piece lost credibility when you included Connie.
that woman can't act to save her life. The hype must be the 10th wonder of the world.
Take a bow, Xolilie and Moshidi. those ladies have talent for days.

22 Nov 2011 09:20

Guys do you still remember when Michelle Botes was on Scandal as Livana(sp) she gave that charector everything!!! Nthanthi wow!! also Lerato Mvelase(Katlego Home Affairs), Connie Chumbe(sp) aka Mamokete in Rhythm City!!! who can forget your world actress Pamela Nomvete(aka Ntsiki).....yoooo

Vandimerwe
22 Nov 2011 09:38

kanti bathong where ca i see Ntsiki because by the time she was in generations i was young and i cant remeber her well.....

22 Nov 2011 09:41

I would add Lerato Mvelase and Tsidi of Rhythm City I think she is good too. Otherwise I agree with you on some actresses.

I think Connie can only act Karabo thats all. Her acting was terrible in the early days of Generations it just improved with time but that does not mean its best.

mbulela
22 Nov 2011 09:43

Sonia???????
are you kidding me?
are you trying to be controversial?
I don't even see the beauty in Sonia. her lips are too wide for my liking.

Speaking good English is not good acting people - Samkelo has one face, nothing deep and no substance with her acting-wise. Don't mix the two. Tery Pheto is just pretty, even Bold hired her for that and reasons of agreement with SABC but she's not a good actress. Beauiful - YES, hands down on that ndingekhe ndamdle'umona

22 Nov 2011 10:12

Nice piece, Tazzz... I also wouldn't include Connie Ferguson, though. She's just hyped up the way its being done to Terry Pheto, now. I would definitely add Vatiswa Ndara, Lerato Mvelase. And definitely eliminate Sonia Sedibe too...like seriously.

22 Nov 2011 10:18

lerato mvelase on the other hand... no too sure about her! linda sokhulu does it for me- she played a prostitute and nalied ot, she played a sangoma and at some point believed she is twasing in real life- busi lurayi as well, saw hwr last week on LNN and thats the only part i laughed at on that lame show. on sokhulu and partners, she nailed the manipulative character.

22 Nov 2011 10:32

Guys .. for clarity ... My opinion, and my intepretation of this article is Tazz is speaking of actresses ... into which Talent is an extremely important part .... and yes, Connie and Sonia have zero depth and zero bandwidth, which disqualifies them as great actresses ... alas ... Terry Pheto may be large now, but she is summarily disqualified from greatness on the same grounds ... White girl Botes has more talent and bandwidth than half of the rest of the list in her pinkie ... and Xoliswa is a very close second ... Popular and sensational does not necessarily equate to greatness...

Lerato Mvelase and most of the people that are mentioned as missing from the list are not great artists, they is a new artist ... and young ..., (one is rarely great and new simultaneously) time will determine whether she is great ... and the list is about 10 artists ... so there!

carino
22 Nov 2011 10:41

@GuyGaga... I don't remember Michelle Botes being on Scandal. I think the role you're referring to is Nirvana and I think the name of the lady that played it is Keren Tahor.

gugulethu72
22 Nov 2011 10:42

@Nqadu kwa kwa kwa kwa kwa you cracked me up there...now that you ahve said it, im realising that it's true, Sonia can play angry, if it's not angry she is a shadow so for me thats not being good.

@zam.ngcobo for me thats being a good actress, seeing the character that they once were, if you give yourself time they will then fit into who they are that time, its very natural for you associate an actress with their previous production until a bit of time goes by and they fall into their new roles, perfect example for me was when Baby Cele replaced Ntati in Home Affairs, it took me a bit of time to dissociate her from Backstage and when i finally did, magic. Same goes for Linda Sokhulu, from Sohkulu and Partners to Nikiwe in Isidingo now so ya, for me thats actually evidence that someone is good!!!!!

LM
22 Nov 2011 10:49

Yes, Terry is pretty, nothing more, nothing less!

I struggle to hear what Linda Sokhulu says most of the time. she tends to speak in her mouth. if she can open her mouth a bit, then she'll get points from me.

Connie, Sonia, Leleti and Terry are all hyped up.

Clementine Mosimane is doing a great job in acting.

Lele Ledwaba: Pinky on Stokvel, Diksie on The Wild & Inno on Society...same character trait

I don't remember Michelle Botes being on Scandal..

1. Pamela Nomvete

3. Vatiswa Ndara who is definitely making a name for herself.

22 Nov 2011 11:25

I strongly sympathize with those that wish for Pamela Nomvete to be included in the list, however I think the list encompasses all that are relevant and get to see plenty a time in one decade, unlike those we have to wonder whether they had pulled a Bonnie/ Nonhle by heading to LA with their backroom acting skills. It is argued that "they do not have a platform" however, that is bull, the only thing SA actors need to realize is that, PASSION for your craft than financial motivation WILL make you stand out, and yes, there are actresses who bring out such moving experiences. The list is totally awesome, however I'd remove Sonia for Vathiswa Ndara. That is one talented, open-minded and versatile woman..her stage presence is not only very powerful, but she has that rare ability to make you lost in her character and her delivery is stella. Leleti Khumalo is also good but in vernac and movies only. Someone made mention of Terry Pheto, I mean terry who???? She must just stick to product endorsement and seducing Brooke's child**bbm hand** even though I use a 3310

Some of the actresses you mentioned do not possess the ability to make their lines and the entire story believable. Nambitha on Generations makes me feel like she is acting. Sonia Sedibe is one dimensional and stiff, good actresses are not supposed to be one dimensional.

Michele Botes is one of my favourite actresses...she has certainly embraced Cherel and she ownes that character and she is believable. Forget the bad storylines they sometimes give her but one thing for sure she delivers.

She doesn't try too hard like I've seen Nambitha doing in Generations, it's just natural to her.

i hv a problem with sonia sedibe in the top ten.i love her, shez beautiful and those teeth are near perfection.but ive seen better.katlego danke is better.she reminds me of megan good.sonia doesnt really act from the heart.its as if shez acting coz she just can not coz she needs to.its not in her blood.otherwise great lineup.

Vatiswa - brilliant
Moshidi - she's gone ghetto but i still lyk her
Nambitha - i dnt feel her on Gen
Cherel - great
Brenda - awesome
Nthathi - wow

Linda Sokhulu - i agree with whoever said she shld open her mouth more I struggle to hear a word she says

Lilian Dube - who can 4get the Baratang character in Mopheme

Mma Nkheshweng -  childhood memories, watching reruns now she's still amazing
Mma Agnes - her character is blivable
Mma Kop - same as above
Sister B RC - they should give her more roles there's a great potential

worst actresses

all actresses on magic world eintlik all the mnet africa channels
Sharon Generations - the gal is bad
Agnes Muvhango
Lucilla RC - she's even starting 2 luk lyk a drag queen

VusiK

Sharon Generations - the gal is bad
Yoh akakwazi uku actor lowomntwana !!!!!
And if she had to leave Gen (I hope the rumours are true) she'll struggle to get another acting job .
Lucilla RC - she's even starting 2 luk lyk a drag queen
Yoh Maddie I dont know who's worse Sharon or Lucilla Damn she's bad maybe she should stick to music ngeke and those fake extra large eye lashes dont do her any justice .
Agnes Muvhango
I like her personality but im not sure whether its the role she plays or she just cant act ?!

VusiK
23 Nov 2011 11:08

I've been forced to watch the Sharon in Generations, KB and the Agness woman in Muvhango ... there are no actresses in any of these women!

Terry phetho definately doesnt have to be there. She is just an average actress. Mna her acting doesnt move me at all. It makes me sad that she got so much recognition and credit after Tsotsi instead of Presley Chwenyagae...... Its really not fair.

Her beauty is the only thing that she is still being cast on these dramas or whatever, nothing more. On tsotsi what else did she do besides standing behind that mkhukhu door and breast feeding the babies and going to fetch water???

I even tried to watch other dramas she acted on after Tsotsi to see this acting of hers that makes her this "big acting star" all of sudden but no I was still not convinced.

It is true that beauty can take you far in this industry......

Tazteeq
23 Nov 2011 16:30

I dont think we should even be talking about Terry Pheto under the topic at hand, the mention of her name is enough to raise my blood-pressure! ofcourse she is beautiful, but top actress? nope, Cheesa, i concur wit' ya....beauty can take you to hollywood and more

sponono
24 Nov 2011 14:52

eish Tazteeq, I sincerely hope this is in no particular order..and some of those on the list...maybe the list should be top ten..in POPULARLITY stakes, not talent...

and...."you want to sob uncontrolably when Nambita acts....?????? realy?Strusbob!!!!
...yes she's been lucky to GET diverse charecters...BUT has she SHOWN diverse ACTING...thats a different story to me...I always see the same "forceful and "serious mama" facial expressions" ..to me she comes across as one dimensional in varied roles...Similarly Connie Ferguson.....

now if you want an actress  who has actualy USED THAT CHANCE when required to ACT as different people in different roles(including adds) ...that would be Brenda Ngxoli, the saloon gossiper, the shebeen/local girl, and the tomboy.
And Xolile shabalala"s acting skills...the jury"s out on that one...

Guys every actor or actress has his own strengths and weakness in a character our industry is too tiny in a way that when you offered a role you can't turn it down!!! Karabo did hold the keys for Generations! She was generations! Nthati moshoesh is a talented actress on which I think she goes and research her character! Motshidi has grown as well! For Nambitha yes she a great actress but for dramas not soapies on Generations she drops the ball more often! Busi Lurayi could have taken the 5th or 6th spot! Great talent for samukelo ndlhovu I like her but she cannot be on the top ten she's just pretty... (((To be Continued)))
