And the top story making Idols 9 headlines is: Forget Randall saying Brenden’s falsetto range didn’t work and could have sounded better bluh bluh, the ultimate Ben 10 is back in the game and is most arguably this week’s best performer. Yes, Brenden is back in the game and is unapologetically reclaiming his space in the competition.
Last week, my two female colleagues in our office went all gangster on me, calling me names saying I am hating on Brenden after I wrote that he needed to pull up his socks. Kaloku mina I believe in honesty and only giving credit where it is due. This week they will be pleased to hear I liked his performance. Not that I am claiming to have liked his performance just to please them. Like Gareth said, when you go falsetto, you are definitely bragging and it’s either it works or doesn’t work. He went further to say in this case, it really worked for Brenden. His performance had Unathi going capricious once again. With tears streaming down her cheeks, she said Brenden’s performance reminded her when she saw her kids for the very first time.
Now we at least know whose Ben 10 Brenden is. Akere ulona, konje ubane, uProverb always says Brenden is the Ben 10. Remember during his first audition, Unathi declared girls will throw their panties at him when he performs on stage. Now we know who she was referring to when she said “girls”. Brenden made my two females colleagues fall in love with Kate Bush’s “This Woman’s Work” all over again.
Sonke took to the stage to render “Go The Distance” from the 1997 animated comedy “Hercules”. I see Sonke and Brenden battling throughout this competition. The two of them really impressed this week. Sonke’s has been the most consistent Idol in this season and his fans have come to expect nothing from him but remarkable work. Remarkable he was indeed such that Gareth said: “This is your time to shine and you are growing each week,” he said. I say add to that, that his fans also grow each week.
Crystalene did a number by Whitney Houson called “Waiting to exhale. Let’s just say her performance wasn’t her best work to date but let’s hope her fans will be honest with her and give her honest feedback in their voting. We do not want a case of people making it by charity. Her backers nearly upstaged her and she didn’t bother to show them who is holding the fort. If you closed your eyes and didn’t watch, you would hear that indeed her backers upstaged her and effortlessly so.
Musa did a Brian McKnight ballad “Win” from the 2000 biographical flick “Men of Honor”. Musa’s voice is very real and should get more people voting for him. He was so calm and collected almost like he owned the stage. He did well and Unathi believed so. “In terms of presentation and the way you performed the song, I absolutely loved it,” she said.
Allegedly having a slippery slope last night was Bunny who performed “Kiss from a rose” by Seal. She apprently had a slippery slope of some sort which I never noticed. Whatever the case might be, she recovered very quickly and brushed it off sharply. However, the judges and viewers at home noticed. Unathi said the best thing she could ever do was forgive herself and said Bunny did so as she continued to perform with grace.
Her BFF Randall this time around didn’t reply with a flirty move. He said something along the lines of…err, eish, nna all I remember was Bunny owning the stage, period. We can only hope her fans will not punish her for it. I love Bunny and though she is not the person who gets my most votes, I had to give her some consolation votes just to ensure she stays.
Zoe looked like a mini Beyonce this week taking to the stage with “Lady Marmalade” by Pink, Christina Aguilera, Mýa and Lil’ Kim from the 2001 Baz Luhrmann movie Moulin Rogue! She was bold with her attire last night as she was wearing a bodysuit and stockings. Mina I lost concentration and focused on her legs and what the costume was covering. My bad!
Christina did an Adele Oscar-winning ballad from what’s most arguably film of the year in 2012. The 007 hit Skyfall had us on the edge of our seats at the cinemas while we watched the James Bond blockbuster. But Christina’s Adele emulation didn’t exactly work well especially in the first part of the song but when she reached the climax, she totally gave it her all as she sang the last note: Skyfall!
Innocent did a Phil Collins’ hit “Two Hearts”. “The way that you believed the words of the song made us believe in you,” said Unathi. Randall though thought that he was carried by the band and “disappeared into the background far too often.”
Who will leave and who will stay, the power is in your hands. Let’s make an Idol y’all!
