Redi Direko Ties The Knot

Talk Radio 702 talk show host, former ENews channel senior news anchor and now Redi on Mzansi current affairs show presenter, Redi Direko, walked down the aisle in a cream bridal gown at Lady of Lebanon Church in Mulbarton yesterday.

Redi Direko
Redi and her sweetheart after saying I do I do

Redi wed her sweetheart, medical practitioner named Brian Tlhabo who is, according to Redi, media shy. The star-studded ceremony was a dream day for our favourite talk show host as she often shed a tear of happiness. Those in attendence reached for their Kleenex when the couple said their vows, reports The Times.

Redi got engaged on Valetine's Day earlier this year.

Redi first spoke about her wedding in an issue of Psychologies where she opened up to the mag about her love life, career and her family as well as the death of her father. Redi told Psychologies that she will not be inviting the media to her wedding but when new True Love editor, Sbu Mpungose, (Former editor or Move!, 2006 and Bona 2010) entered into talks with her about giving the mag rights to take pictures at her wedding, she relented.

Redi is currently on the cover of True Love magazine and the story is one of the very few covers I enjoyed, well except for the Basetsana Khumalo cover (August edition). The magazine promised us a full pictorial spread of Redi's biggest day ever! In the magazine, Redi spoke in great detail about how she met her "prince charming" and the love they have for each other.

Redi on Psychologies
Redi on Psychologies cover

Questioned about whether she is kind of anxious about marying a man who is 13 years older than her, has two children with his ex-wife, Redi told Psychologies she gets on very well with his daugters. She also told the mag that the children are assured of the unwavering love both their parents have for them. She also told True Love: "I don't want to add another chapter to the pathetic story that wife and ex-wife should be enemies. I respect the fact that Brian has children with his ex-wife and that will not change. I get on well with is ex-wife." You go girl! You are known for being outspoken.

A non-Christian but a believer in a Higher Being, Redi, who got married at a church and the ceremony officiated by a pastor, told Psychologies that it's stupid that peoople believe Mary fell pregnant by the Holy Spirit. "I don't like the Christian doctrine and I think it's pathetic that an educated person believe the nonsense that a woman can fall pregant without an intercouse." Lemme not get preachy with her because I firmly believe she lost it, but at the same time, I have a soft spot for this woman. Also known for being a non-conformist, Redi told True Love that she initially wanted her mother to walk her down the aisle on her wedding day since her father is no more. Her mom refused. "I had to choose my brother to walk me down the aisle because my wedding is not only about me but about families. I just don't like the patriachal view that a man must give me away, why not a woman?" Redi challenges societal script.

True Love
I just spoke with True Love editorial assistant requesting their current cover in a picture format and the lady said her deputy editor (Mapula Nkosi, I presume) is refusing to give out picture of their cover with Redi. I know they will put it on their forever "coming soon" website and I was gonna copy it from there but it's a pity because they always put it there a month later when another issue is in stores. Don't they know this was gonna generate circulation for them? Hai, Black people!

Among the 400 invited guests were former Generations actress Phemelo Motene, Metro FM presenter Criselda Kananda, power couple Basetsana and Romeo Kumalo, and her Talk Radio 702 colleague David O'Sullivan, reports The Times. A choir sang hymns as she and her husband, Brian, stole looks at each other. But while he remained composed, the former eNews presenter couldn't hide her excitement and constantly pulled her man's arms.

Redi also told True Love that she will be changing her surname to that of her sweetheart's. "I don't care about the whole branding thing and ratings. I am taking my man's surname," she said.

Redi is apparently in honey moon in New York this morning.

known for being outspoken......a non-conformist......challenges societal script, yup, thts Redi. I dont always agree with her, yes indeed even on her views on Christianity...but generally i have mad love and respect for her.
I pray her all the best in her married life.

3 yrs ago i was convinced that with her non-conformist tendencies she wouldnt get married...this just goes to show just how broad her character is and i love that.

Tltltltltltllttltltl, funny GA!
So..true love is already out with her wedding as the cover??...
On the current cover of True Love, she only talks about her wedding. The mag hit stores last week Thursday. In the next edition, it is only then that we will get her wedding pics to spoil our eyes. So, GA, since you are not big on magazines but big on Redi Direko, diarise 7 October as the mag with her wedding pics hit the shelves. You can also buy the current edition of the mag. It's a pity True Love is giving me attitude because you were gonna see the mag here and quickly run to buy it on your nearest garage.

mxim, TheTimes ba sele. The headlines says "Now it is Mr and Mrs Direko "
That's what the pastor said. He mistakenly said I now pronounce you husband and wife and are now Mr and Mrs Direko. It just goes to show how powerful Redi DIREKO is.

makisto
13 Sep 2010 10:28

babyt4t, it's not me, it's Redi Direko. It's no use getting all worked up about it because everyone is entitled to their views. In principle, religion is not for debate hence I also said I don wanna get preachy about it. Redi says she is non-religious.

Redi is stubborn and a non-conformist. Let her say what she wanna say and say what you wanna say but please don't get all worked my love.

Ya bona whe it comes to that, i dont think its advisable to be throwing curse words at the people who dont believe in Christianity. Its not dealing with the situation with grace and tact...i think we must all evolve to a point were we do away with religious fights/wars...its ridiculous to think that thats the major cause for a lot of bloodshed and prejifice.
Work out your won salvation/christianity/religion and do it as for your God and not for men. Just do your thing babay!

QueI thstioned about whether she is kind of anxious about marying a man who is 13 years older than her, has two children with h is ex-wife,

makisto
13 Sep 2010 11:17

@Sobza, I was also shocked when I read that statement in Psychologies. But I am now in a point in my life where I am able to respect other's people's views even though I don't agree with them. I am unashamedly a Christian but I just don't like debating religion because debating it is a course for disaster and fights or even wars as GA said.  Besides, Redi is someone who is set in her ways. That may just change because love softens people up. Her man is Christian and she agreed to a church ceremony, all the details in True Love.
Hau Sobza, where is your review of Saturday's game. Phela that game was ayoba man. I was thinking maybe you were gonna write something about it. I am looking forward to the do or die or the deciding game this coming Saturday.

Thank you poshspice. Look at Connie and Shona. Shona is four years younger than Connie. My girlfriend is 6 months older than me. Love matters and should be above everything else. Le teng, the guy is only 45, not 75.
I think people are kind of starting to get over it and I believe True love did well by asking that question as they are dispelling the age difference disaster stereotype in their own right.
Redi told True Love that her man o a mobetja ka bo maR50 and R100 on Saturdays so she can buy sweets and newspapers.

What i dont understand about these non-Christian people is that they say they dont believe in Christainity but in higher power.
To be fair and respectful to your artcile and of her views i really would want to know did she got married in a non-Christian Church? by a non-Christain Reverend? is there a Church that worships higher power only her in SA? where is it?

Sorry Makisto but i jsut want to know more of her religion more than her marriage. pity we all wont know until she explains further.

BUT i take it seriously when its me...not so much when its an older guy, but when its a younger guy. Even a month...no even a week younger i tell you guys i take it so seriously, ill keep saying ..":im older than you, im older than you"..and shame the poor guys tend to get pissed by that. And i feel terrible, but still maintain im older..........is this a cause that calls for repentance?....lol...i shall wait for the spirit to convict me otherwise.

Eish Pele, I have also noticed th whole non-God but Higher being believers thingie. My man, her mom is Christian, her brother a Christian and a pastor. She got married in a church and the word of God was preached: "A man shall leave his mother and father...let what God joins not be un-joined by anyone",  lol, it's just Redi being a non-conformist that she is.
GA, you would say leshapo la kgale, that's standardised Northern  Sotho. Sepedi is also a dialect withing the Northern Sotho languages. A 3 day debate was held last year in Phalaborwa whether it's Sepedi or Northern Sotho.

hloni
13 Sep 2010 12:10

@Pele...everyone believes in a higher-power. The religions are just the different ways to get to, or communicate with, that higher being. Some say thru Jesus, or Mohammed, or amadlozi, or uShembe...but in essence...we all believe in a higher being. Just that Redi(and myself) dont believe in a higher being that created us only to require that we first seek an interpreter or middleman to communicate with him/her. in all honesty...it's fair to say that religion is based on where u come from...if u were born into a muslim family than u would have most probably been muslim. So i chose to cut out the middleman that's all...and kudos to Redi for doing the same.

I dont particularly like the way she speaks down to her listners on her show...she just seems too authorative for me.

As for middleman part, i hope you  dont think Christians think their reverends are their middleman? as that is not true.

13 Sep 2010 13:02

The Higher Being would be:

Allah in Arabic, YHWH in Jewish, God in English, uNkulunkulu in isiZulu etc. but whether you call Him Jah or whatever doesn't matter, He has 99 names afterall.

Christians believe that Jesus Christ (Peace be upon Him) is the only way through to God.

Prophet Isaih Shembe (Peace be upon Him) is the founder of the Nazareth Baptist Church and not their link to God. They talk to God directly. There's no religion called Shembe. According to my understanding this is not a religion but a way of Living.

Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon Him) was the Messenger of God to Whom the Quran was revealed to. Muslims believe that there's no god but God and only submitt to Him. Islam is not a religion but a way of Living.

So far I have not heard of religion called Amadlozi but maybe I'm in the dark, please elaborate more Hloni.

13 Sep 2010 14:02

@One and only. Christianity is also a way of living...religion is a way of living.

you can even go as far as saying the etheism is a religion becos religion is simply a belief system and thus a way of living. There are different religions...Islam is a religion.

Muhammad is a different version of Jesus to different ppl...all the leaders of the religions or churches claim in some way to have a deeper relationship with God. That God speaks, or spoke, through them. Wether Jesus, Shembe, Mohammed.

Since there are ppl who believe in amadlozi and live their lives in terms of this belief system that makes the belief in amadlozi a religion.

Religion:Religion is the belief in and worship of a god or gods, or a set of beliefs concerning the origin and purpose of the universe.[1] It is commonly regarded as consisting of a person’s relation to God or to gods or spirits.

13 Sep 2010 14:33

We can debate religion as long as we dont undermine each others beliefs and think ours are superior than the others.
it's interesting for real, sometimes you learn more of your percetions  and stereotypes of somethign you didint know about other religion, so it is healthy to debate such things we can't all shy away from it. So Hloni and One&Only let's push Makisto to write an article about religion otherwise we'll ruin this wedding article shame....

One and Only
13 Sep 2010 14:48

Personally I see nothing wrong with discussing religion and/or politics as long as people are not gonna be offensive.

Pele the best way to do your research would be to go to these denominations personally and experience things first hand.

When I say it's a way of Living I meant the following:

Muslims are prohibited from consuming pork, drinking alcohol and smoking. They are also expected to wear in a certain way when going to the Mosque etc.

With Nazareth Baptist Church members, they are not allowed to consume warm food friday evening till saturday evening, men, women and children all sit in their respective areas etc.

With Christianity there are no rules, each and every church decides what fit them and what not. They emphasize more on faith.

Muhammad is a different version of Jesus to different ppl... Hloni can you please do your research thoroughly before you make such statements!

Amadlozi/Ancestors are people who once lived and has passed on, it is not a religion. As part of my culture I slaughter for them, talk to them and even go to their tombs not to worship them but to let them know how much I miss them etc.

pele
13 Sep 2010 14:53

Hayi man i cant do that, not having a hot meal on a Friday and not eating pork will kill me in one day of trying.

hloni
13 Sep 2010 15:07

@Pele...just one last thing i want to clear up.

I believe in God. I own a bible. I grew up in a church environment. My kids will grow up in a church environment. This is because i know how the bible and church can shape a human being, especially a child, according to proper values, habits and behaviours. I will read the bible, the OLD testament, to my children and teach them the values contained in the stories of the bible, just as i have many books that i would read to them to teach them some good life lessons. I will not preach to them about Jesus. I still visit church just to be in an environment where i can praise him, and most importantly to thank him without any outside interference. I dont believe there is only one way to God...i dont believe that God doesnt listen to, recognise, or answer the prayers of ppl just because they are born into a family that is not christian. I dont believe in a God that would abandon the majority of today's living population just becos they are not christian. I pray to my God...and so far my God has answered my prayers with even more blessing than i could ever ask for.

I know this is a difficult concept for most ppl to understand, just like it's difficult for me to understand why ppl would use his name to attack other nations while they also believe we are all made in his image.

I believe Jesus existed, Mohammed existed, Shembe existed, and that my ancestors existed. I dont believe that i need to call their names in order to talk to God...because i dont believe he involved any of them in creating me.
UNkulunkulu us'thanda sonke.

hloni
13 Sep 2010 15:18

One and Only? With Christianity there are no rules, each and every church decides what fit them and what not. They emphasize more on faith.
That is my gripe with Christianity, everyone does wat they like, and these churchs dont understand each other...and even dont like it each other...and they use the same book to attack and to defend each other. Which faith is it that all Christians emphasize?...is Shembe and the catholic church both christian?

Do u ask for protection and good luck from your ancestors?..and do u believe they watch over you?...and do u believe they can hear you?

One and Only
13 Sep 2010 15:26

I dont believe that i need to call their names in order to talk to God...because i dont believe he involved any of them in creating me.

Hloni do you truly believe that your ancestors were not involved when you were created? You wouldn't have existed today if they never existed.

The surname that you have today can be traced back to them, this is what the intellects call the "family tree"

You are right about one thing though and that is that God is not a Muslim, Christian, Jewish, Hindi, etc but He is a neutral God. The children of Israel were once forsaken by Him for not obeying His rules and they were Jewish for your info.

You guys must read a book called The Shack written William Paul Young. It will challenge the way you think of God. How you think God operates, what you think God dislikes. If God listenes to music, what kind of music would he listen to? According to the book, God can listen to Kwaito, house, Gospel, hip hop despite popular belief that he will listen to Gospel. The story is written in a novel form so it's not boring.

Novel summary on religion and suffering
Mackenzie Allen Philips’ youngest daughter, Missy, has been abducted during a family vacation and evidence that she may have been brutally murdered is found in an abandoned shack deep in the Oregon wilderness. Four years later in the midst of his Great Sadness, Mack receives a suspicious note, apparently from God, inviting him back to that shack for a weekend. Against his better judgment he arrives at the shack on a wintry afternoon and walks back into his darkest nightmare. What he finds there will change Mack’s world forever. In a world where religion seems to grow increasingly irrelevant “The Shack” wrestles with the timeless question, “Where is God in a world so filled with unspeakable pain?” The answers Mack gets will astound you and perhaps transform you as much as it did him. You’ll want everyone you know to read this book!
