Minister Dlamini-Zuma Stars in Generations

Home Affairs Minister Nkosazana Clarice Dlamini-Zuma made her acting debut on Generations on Tuesday 20 July. It was really funny but not all too surprising though because it runs in the family. Her daughter Gugu Zuma is in Isidingo as the love-struck Lesedi Moloi.

Dlamini Zuma
Minister Dlamini Zuma had her acting gig in Generations

This isn't the first time a soapie rakes in a politician, well, it depends on how you look at it. In 2005 7de Laan wanted to feature the now dethroned President Thabo Mvuyelwa Mbeki but his hectic shedule didn't allow it so they brought in someone who looked a bit like Mbeki but never showed his face. Generations has just made history and it is likely that other soapies will follow suit. Especially shows such as Isidingo that love featuring current affairs in their storylines.

With US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton
Diplomats: Minister with US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton

Now let's go back to Minister Dlamini-Zuma's acting gig. In her 10 seconds stint, I wasn't at all amused by her being on the show. Quite frankly, it added no value whatsoever to the show. Generations has clumsy storyliners and script writers. If they really wanted to highlight the "Id/you are married" ((((((huh, me, married?) plight faced by many South Africans, they should have done the story in-depth and do some really proper research and extensively show the effects of such a situation. Generations failed its 5 million loyal fans + 5 million bored viewers (=10 million)who can't help but watch the crap. I bet all my money on the fact that many wanted the show, when bringing in the Minister, to show something that we don't know. Is the Minister's job to visit Home Affairs offices throughout the country? The show should have taken into consideration that probably over a 3rd of its viewers really don't know what the Minister does.

Zuma and her sweetheart
Gugu Zuma and hubby

The show is supposed to be entertaining yet educational, all that I saw was a politician-struck Sara wanting to pose for a picture with the Minister and nothing about her "marriage" plight. I would have wanted her to really speak with the Minister about this situation and probably come up with ways of preventing it in an educational yet entertaining manner. You remember back in 2008 January a man held Home Affairs hostage in Pretoria? Well, that's just me. Generations Executive Producer, Mfundi Vundla must take his writers, producers and storyliners to an extensive soapie production course.

Don't even get me started on the kiss story that's busy repeating itself. It started with Grace, then Ntombi and now it's Ruby. Lol, why does the show undermine our intelligence like that? But anyway, Loyal Generubbish viewers are used to being fed crap.

Gen logo
In true boring Generations style

It really can do the show some good if they can go through the country in search of great script writers and storyliners.

This is in view of the fact that the show had Minister Dlamini-Zuma at their disposal yet they didn't even do their job with her presence there. Maybe, just maybe, they needed to do something I may be missing, that Home Affairs is doing nothing about id-troubled citizens. Then, it's a real Home Affiars Horror as Daily Sun editor Themba Khumalo terms it in his newspaper.

At least in case the ANC government fires her, she knows she has a job as an actress.

Thanx Makisto, been starving....
On the Home affairs-Sara-Khaphela-Nkosazana Dlamini storyline ..i totally agree with you. I could copy and paste what you said again.
I was very excited on the wedding day when Sarah had just found out she is still married. I thought the informative element would make a diffrence because this things happen....well the informative element i anticipated that is.....but the whole thing was trivialised so terribly i am disappointed.

It is always makes me wonder how come people who clearly know that Generations is crap managed to watch every chance they get or it airs? could it be because they love crap or maybe crap isnt that much crap when they are in their houses and it only becomes crap when they are in the midst of other people?

Like realy now, how do you manage to willingly watch crap?

My take on the ID issue

I believe it wasnt more about people getting married without their concern because Sara knew she was married to Solomon. i do believe they created that story in order to enlighten us about the negligence that people often make when they loose they loved one's ie reporting to home affairs that a person passed away so shim can be declared dead for different reasons eg ... Sara as a wife was gonna also be declared widow, or incase someone get hold of the ID and decide to do untinkable or commit whatever crime, then they will be able to know that, the that person was reported dead, so something might not be right somewhere.

Minister showing up
I believe they did that because, ever since she became a minister of HA, she has took it upon herself to show up unannounce at HA offices, so it was one of those, and everytime when she shows up, she obviously does that so she could see for herself if the publiv is being served as their deserve, Dlamini-Zuma has been doing that, that' another reason her department has improved(in some offices) in their service delivery ... ie, the officer told Kand S, the process normal takes 6 month, then she said she was gonna try to speed up the process or whatever, but after the spoke to the minister, the minister promised to follow up on the matter and that it might be done in a months time(Sara said so when shewa at Ezweni)...

Sara being star-strucked bythe minister, well i dont blame her, i would be so excited too to see the minister trying to help my case.

This whole issue is only dependent on wht Gen decided to show the id issue and i think it is because of the reasons i stated ...

i thank you

@Zandi84...Don't look at it that way, dear. To some people beauty is not just the face and for old school like Sarah and Khaphela, l understood what they meant.
Dr Zuma is a very humble, generous and polite woman, it pains my heart to see such comments about her, We are all born different and the remaining point is that no matter how ugly l may seem to you, in God's eyes l am beautiful, it was not a mistake that l look different from other beauty queens.

@Zah000...l just wonder why did she agree to play such a small role.

GA you make your point very clear and I will agree with the fact that Gen lost the plot somewhere because it isn't really clear what they are trying to achieve. I know about the whole-unannounced visit but really, was that the best Gen could come up with? I don't think so. Gen failed and lost the plot in every aspect of the whole id thing. They need urgent training.
Why does i t take the Minister to speed up the process? Why doesn't it happend everyday that proccesses are sped up? Khapela is a wise man and he could have asked those questions. Like I said, maybe it's just me and my creative mind lol.

Please let's respect the fact that we are all made on God's image and God loves us all. It isn't morally right to judge people on how they look. I would rather say let's ask about her not challenging her acting gig to highlight something trully groundbreaking.

Hawu poor-little Dini, wena mos you don't even watch the show once a week.
Here is a brief synopsis:
Graces kisses Samuel in a moment of weakness while seeing Ajax. She keeps mum about it and Ajax proposes. He finds out and all hell breaks loose. It was great as it was a first. Then, Kenneth kisses Ntombi and Ntombi is married to Sbuda. It shakes their marriage and dramatic events that lead to tvplus, Move! and Drum covers. Again, Kenneth kisses Ruby, Ruby is Kenneth's mom-in-law. Duh, are we watching the Bold now?

Well Makisto, look at the productivity at your company when your boss is around and when they are not around, that the same answer i could give you. Another reason could be, like any other company HA has their own standard procedures that they need to follow, get certain approvals in order to move things from point A to point B, so having someone like minister could real speed things up because of the authority that she has, she can tell anyone to stop what they are doing a sign a certain document compared to documents wating there for 3 more hours until the same person get time to look at them, see what i mean?

On watching crap, it's because it's part of every Black family culture to watch the show and there is nothing better airing on SABC or Etv for us who don't have DSTV.

I dont think any culture can ever force anyone to do things they dont want to do, otherwise every girl in KwaZulu Natal will be a virgin unless if they are married! you choose to or not to follow the culture .... one another note others always say Soapies are a women thing/culture, do you agree with that?

Makisto, i would like to believe that you understand me when i say there are standard procedures that need to be followed, and one procedure can invlolve many different people and many approvals.... Taking the example that you gave "mos they don't need approvals to say a healthy person is dead!, They also don't need approval to say someone is married even though they are happily single!
"
i would like to believe that we both know that same HA has different offices where different activities are perfomed, if you remember very well, when Kand S went to HA to get married they were at the different office from the one there were at yesterday, the first officer told them what he saw n the system and him alone couldnt rectify that mistake or whatever one call it, he then send them to the other person who could be able to help them, who also tell them about the procedure taking 6 months(let us just say this is the standard process, that takes 6 months), so obviously i means that process takes 6 months to be done. Having said that these processed could be faster if you hold certain powers within HA in this case if you are the minister... that's is, as a minister, she is able to take that file to the next offiec and Not take it to the cabinet to queue like allother files that are there, waiting for approval (the same process cold be delayedd, if the person who is concerned, gets sick, dies or doesnt show up at work on the day.)

Im certain that they are implementing processes that are currenty faster than what it used to be in HA, ie it used to take you 3 months to get your Id, now within a month you get it........ It can not be done all in one day !

in a figurative way that majority Black families are watching it

I like the fact that you used Majority instead of ALL, so you can still save yourself from watching crap and be the minority that doesnt! You can use that 30 min you waste watching crap in something useful while waiting for the 20h30 news, let us just say you are real real forced to wait on watching crap at night n you real dont have anything to do and there is real nothing you ca do about it except to watch crap, Why are you wasting your employers resources writting and talking about the same crap your were forced to watch lst night when you could be doing somethi at work or doing something else? you dont have to torture yourslelf like this, just leave the crap for the time when you are forced into it, now it is daylight, you cn even take a walk instead of talking and writting about crap.

makisto
21 Jul 2010 11:27

Sobza, with freedom comes responsibilty. It's a pity the same governemnt that taught people about freedom failed to teach them about responsibilty. This is in no way whatsoever, about me but about individuals making fun of how the Minister looks. You are allowed to disagree about the story in which she starred in and you can say it was good, educational and entertaining like BA said. Saying things like that is just downright wrong, nasty and you know it. I will not encourage bloggers to bully her on my blog, yes, I said  on my blog. You can post a blog (you are free to do so) and bully people in it and you shall gain nothing. What happened to constructive critisism? The essence of Frankly Speaking is to constructively critisise and praise if the situation allows but definitely not to bully people.

21 Jul 2010 11:38

Saying the woman is beautiful shows how limited the scriptwriters' vocabs are. They certainly could've used other terms to describe her or her other qualities. This is simply propaganda. What better way to spread the "we care about the little man on the street and please note that we've been doing random visits to HA offices" than use Generubbish? I really didnt get wht was their plan, i laughed out myself when Sara said ex- Mrs president was beautiful WTF are we short of models or what hahahaha
or this is a time where we should know now that Zuma's are evrywhere.

take God and his image out of this, mama Zuma is ugly qha ke, as i would say mhle xa emhle suka. And as for respecting adults, i really dont think anyone going to a saopie will little mindely think they wont be riduculed, once you go on TV an actor you must be willing to suffer teh consequences of fame tshhh

you cannot equate the Minister, especially Dlamini-Zuma (Don't get me wrong though, I'm not pro-ANC), with Khanyi Mbau and the likes. Please hle! Where is respect? Didn't your parents teach you not to say funny things about the elderly? ....But makisto buti'aka nke ke lahlele la mafelelo la bushuana.....i dont think anyone, young or old should be told such things. Mme maDlamini or khanyi...Yes, soceity has adopted terrible cultures and habits for whoch its okay to trash people like Khany and young kids ko strateng because we think we are superious i guess in aesthetic appeal or even in morals. BUT we could make the world better one person at at ime if we treated atleast one person with kindness...especially the little ones. Such things are damaging.
As you say...This is about principle. Age, colour or creed should not be have anything to do wityh it. ...

okay okay okay...now im confused.

I hope there is a difference between the critique on the HA story and critique on Gen being crap or not.

Is gen crap or not??..this topic disturbds me everytime i read it. But i think everyone has a right to express their opinion about how they feel about it or anything for that matter. But i dont understand why those who like it insult those who dont like it vise versa...a ke understande hle bathong.

HA storyline critique. @BA...i love how you broke down what they were trying to achieve. I hope that the message was clear to the people who did not have the information at all to start with...such as: Im certain that they are implementing processes that are currenty faster than what it used to be in HA, ie it used to take you 3 months to get your Id, now within a month you get it........ It can not be done all in one day ! and other procedures that Sara and Khaps took. i dont remember what they were told to do in order to fix the situation so thyat other people in similar situation can be informed. Did i miss that?

PS:...what is the thinline between positive critisism and trash talking or being a hater...sometimes i get really confused.

GA you will never get that right here on TVSA because it is either you agree with the writer/multitude or you are labelled hater or trasher

Mam Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, is not an actress and i dont believe she went to auditions to get a role, i believe she was asked to appear on Generations because of the position she hold and the way she has been doing in real life with the appearances in HA, so expecting her to be your Ntombi of Generations is a bit too ambitious. nway that's how i'd like to view this

Lela
21 Jul 2010 14:54

I can never say a person is ugly young or old,id rather say unokhitha. As 4 gen we watch cz we have no choice qha.

makisto
21 Jul 2010 15:04

Everything noted. Just wanted to say by her nature, Dlamini-Zuma is a soft person.
As you say GA, the line between critisism and trashing, is very thin and sometimes even blurred. You see, critisising how one acts on TV and how they dress (in real life), that's critisism. Saying JZ's polygamous relations with females cost the tax payer dearly is critisism. Now, saying i.e JZ's head is big and his mouth not so great and has 6 toes, is just simply trashing the person not constructively critisising anything about their character because no matter what you say about them, their big head will still be there. But if you say his polygamous marriages bluh bluh... it is constructive in that it might not happen again. I don't know if I make sense. @Mawiniza, but the minister appeared as herself so she didn't need to be someone she's not.

Is it even possible for her to go into a room alone without her bodyguards and allow to be touched by normal unknown Koos vd Merwe?

Green.arrow
21 Jul 2010 15:40

You make sense makisto...
However i get very confused when it comes to critiquing tv shows or movies. Wa bona personally just based on the current article, the HA storyline was well critisized, suggestions offered etc IMO (thats for those who were not satidfied)...then came the geneartions is crap part, generubbish as fondly referrd to by others..is the latter still positive critisism? Its not the first time gen has come under fire, many shows and even people in the entertainment buzz have been attacked as such...and nothing...nothing positive is appreciated about the subjects even if its just effort. ??

Green.arrow
21 Jul 2010 15:43

You see, critisising how one acts on TV and how they dress (in real life), that's critisism...and even here i think it should be done with tact etc....
its a hard job being the spotlight shem...but i think everyone deserves to not being spoken ill off..at the end of the day its still people we are talking about..anyway...its aight.

21 Jul 2010 15:53

Saying Gen is crap in my opinion may challenge writers to want to do better. I do get you on the HA storyline and critisising as well as offering suggestions. The writers of the show have become comfortable and saying the show is crap amounts to constructive critisism in that something can be done about it. I think this is where the line of constructive critisism becomes unclear to others. My editor can call my article crap and not up to scratch and offer critisism and ways on improving it. You see, in the future, I'm going to take the comments into consideration and improve my articles. The freedictionary.com describes crap as Cheap or shoddy material, Miscellaneous or disorganised items; clutter.

this thing of us watching Generations because there is nothing better to watch on TV @ 8 (for the disheless) amanga maan....everybody who watches generations watches it because he/she wants to stop this manga manga business yokuthi you watch it ngoba you are forced to.....

people must just admit it like i do...Generations is crap sometimes but i watch it none the less...because even if their storylines suck from time to time...they are other things that crack me up...like ama line ka Dumisani(if you listen to him and not read the subtitles) he sure is very funny....

i watch it because i love seeing who is wearing what(good or bad)....i watch it because i want somebody i can laugh at without feeling guilty....

i have many reasons for watching gen....I dont watch it because i am forced...I have friends who cant stand generations and they  never watch even a single episode....

22 Jul 2010 12:40

Its amazing how , people complain about Generations & yet come 20h00 they are glued to their screens.....it is impossible to satisfy each & every1 in those millions of this soapie's viewers..........every1 wants this episode to be like this & that or the actor to be/do this & that.
From episode 1 people have been complaining but they still watch, their excuse is that there's no alternative.
Acting will never be 'real' life people.......it will remain acting no matter how close it is to real life.so please don't expect things to happen like they do in real life.It is acting, it is the only platform where a dead person can wake up, nothing wrong with that since it is acting......if we don't wake up dead people in acting, where must we do that cause in real life that's not possible?
Next time when watching Generations  remember its only a play.....not real life.
