Bafana Bafana Scores Triple Punishment

Bafana Bafana put on a dismal peformance last night at Loftus Versveld, much to the dismay of fans, Facebook-ers and Tweeter-ers.

Aaron Mokoena
Pretoria weather on 16 June started on a freezing -1 and that pehaps gave an indication that team South Africa would give a freezing peformance in The City of Tshwane.

What became clear last night was that Bafana Bafana need to do something rather drastic in order for it to make it out of the group matches. Teko Modise, Sphiwe Tshabalala and Aaron Mokoena gave their worst peformance of all time. Modise fell everytime he had a ball on his court, Sphiwe would not pass the ball because he still thinks he can score like he did during the historic opening game against Mexico on 11 June. I don't know what Mokoena is still doing in the team.

Diego Forlan
Uruguay's Diego Forlan scored a goal before half time putting pressure on our boys. After half-time, South Africa had her fingers crossed that at least we can score a goal and peherps even score a second one. With just less than 30 minutes to the final whistle, something rather devastating happened. Uruguay's Alvaro Pereira was about to score when Khune tried to grab the ball from his legs. Khune "scored" a red card and the "racist" referee awarded Pereira a penalty. The guy was offside and didn't deserve a penalty and our Khune didn't deserve that "racist" red card.

facebook

Facebook immediately started buzzing with fans saying the "racist referee should be taught a kasi lesson". Some even posted that "the referee must start packing because he shall not walk on SA soil". Some of my Facebook buddies called him names. Even Walter Mokoena and his commentators in the studio said it was punishment enough for team SA that Uruguay was awarded a penalty and therefore, it was unnecessary for him to banish Khune from the World Cup.

Poor Khune
A heartbroken Khune left the ground, coach Carlos Alberto Pereira sacrificed  Steven Pienaar so he could put in Moneeb Josephs on Khune's shoes. Khune's shoes proved to be too big for Josephs to put on as Alvaro Pereira scored the penalty, silencing all staunch and part-time Bafana Bafana supporters. Even some of the fans at the stadium started leaving in droves.

Moneeb Josephs
At just one minute left for the final whistle, Forlon scored another goal putting final devastation on all fans and everybody else who is pro-Bafana Bafana. As the game ended, the score was 3 Uruguay 0 South Africa.

In order for team SA to make it out of the group matches, we need to hope that France will wallop Mexico today or at least they draw and we need to win our next game by probably 2-0, which, if Bafana Bafana continue on their current pace, will not happen. At the gym weight floor and showers this morning, everybody was talking last night's game and saying we must hope that France and Mexico draw. I said to them: We cannot rely on other teams to save us and work for us. If we are to make it out of group matches, we need to it ourselves. This puts us in a situation we were in last year during the Confederations Cup when we had to wait to hear whether the team we have drawn with was moered. It indeed was moered and we made it to the quarter finals but Brazil gave us a whipping, shuttering us from reaching the semis.

Carlos Alberto Pereira
Newspapers headlines this morning are empathsising with fans. The Times says "Heartbreak", the Pretoria News says "Floods of tears", the Sowetan says "Agony", Ther Citizen says "Bafana Bullseye", hinting at that Loftus is home to Blue Bulls and Bafana have a Blue eye this morning.

Last night our boys didn't look like they were playing in a World Cup, let alone being the host country. Bafana Bafana got punished three times. 1. They didn't mark the dangerous Forlan and they got punished for it. 2. They didn't attack and they got punishment as well hence they didn't score any goal. 3.The team was very weak in all spheres and that gave Uruguay a field night on the pitch hence they scored three goals.
Alberto Pereira

After the final whistle, a Facebook buddy of mine posted something which peherps sums everything up: "relax, its only a game, hehehe! S.Az stil hosting the W.C thou...its stil a gud tourist attraction n al! @ lst the players who wer part of the squad cn add W.C participation in their resumés! #lookingonthebrightside".

A lot of guys just disappeared in the pitch, the likes of Masilela noMoriri. And uLotsholonyane (sp) nama passes akhe adakiwe. Eish it was our worst performance since the Santana era. Forlan had a feast ngathi

We were going to lose, but i would have lived with 1:0, and not 3 goals

How do you come back from a fall like that, my soul is ripped. i am still behind Bafana, but I dont think we will make it to the final 16. Khune is missing the next game, and Moneeb is just not ready for France.

Whether the future looks bright, dull or anyhow, i am still behind the boys... Even if they dont make it to the next round, i will still be behind them... The uruguay team was stronger than us, and like they said Pareirra must sacrifice 1 midlefielder for a striker..Teko Modise must make way for Parker or Nomvete

Uruguay is not the strongest team out there, bagadla ngoForlan and that other guy. I think we could've done better if we had the winning spirit and the right game plan. Ibhola belivele libande when it got forward, our shots were not strong enough. And is still say Perreira should get rid of Modise in the next game

Pointing fingures won't help at all. The boys were beaten fair and square. The Ref, or the coach had no problem, let's just accept that we will not win all the battles/matches in life...

Uruguay played very well, our guys tried their best but they were not good enough to beat the other team. Eish we lost and lets hope for the best against France.

Bafana Bafana has my support all the way, win or lose, its not the end of the world, hope they will do their best in 2014.

It's funny that we have been winning on penalties on our last 5 friendly matches and never cried foul about the referees.

A friend just sent this email.. Shame maan..

I have never seen such a dismal and disgusting performance by a national team with massive support like yesterday. Any national team with the kind of support that we gave to Bafana Bafana will have won by a big margin than to lose as such. The less said about the Chiefs foolish goalkeeper the better. He was lucky to have finished the 1st half without a yellow card, when he release the ball, he is always at the edge or outside the 18 areas box. How he keep sleeping when the 1st goal came in is such a shock. Siphiwe Chabalala became too selfish since he scored our opening goal, kept on wasting balls. Teko Modise kept on falling and losing balls unnecessary. Aaron Mokoena and his defence just play to pass back to the goalkeeper and nothing else. That Fong Kong team of players were never prepared to win anything yesterday.

We did all we can to support these palookas. From buying expensive yellow shirts to car mirror hoods, vuvuzelas, you name them. I have learned how to blow a vuvuzela with pride even though I used to hate the instrument just for this useless Bafana Bafana to break the nation’s hearts like that. I was in the presidential VIP suites at Loftus, I can tell you that the disappointment in the eyes of President Jacob Zuma, the President of SAFA, the Dr. Irvin Khozas, Dr. Danny Jordans, and all the VIPs cannot be explained.

BigMama
17 Jun 2010 10:33

@One, true that, of all the matches l have watched so far, the Refs are just giving yellow and red cards like they  are on special, but no one complained, now bcoz its  Bafana, the Ref. is paid.

The boys must up their game or kiss the cup goodbye...

Green.arrow
17 Jun 2010 10:38

Never mind Zuma...i wonder how my favorate Archbishop is doing,...he must be very sad, genuinly so.....

i wonder how this is affecting Phillip,..will he leave?, or will SAans put on their jersey's still and support other teams?...thats if the boys wont fint into needle whole

@ Makisto..then why did Pereira still put him in the game? there could be many reasons, what i read was a report about his tired legs, yet he was still enthusiastic, it ddnt sound like a train smash to him, but thats the thing, we usually dont listen to our bodies when we have big things to deal with.

realist
17 Jun 2010 10:43

Bafana has never beaten Uruguay. They have played each other twice before yesterday and on the first occasion the score was 4-3 in favour of Uruguay. The second occasion the score was 0-0.

On balance of probability yesterday the odds were against Bafana. Lets hope France/Mexico game the results is a draw and Bafana are able to beat France and hope Uruguay do us a favour either by winning or drawing with Mexico.

That is the only way Bafana can be able to progress to the next round. Let us be realistic here, Bafana are not playing with palookas in that group.

makisto
17 Jun 2010 10:47

@ Green.Arrow and his legs cost us. @ Sslave, I think your friend is exaggerating and blowing the whole thing out of proportion. When your team loses, you still support them and don't speak about the money you spent because nobody forced you buy anything. Rather he/she bought all those from the non-stingy wallet of hers or his. Khune is a victim of circumstances and maybe really even racism.

The gautemala and that game they played @ Attredgville didnt have penalties, so i am not sure what you talking about!! I also dont remember Bafana scoring a penalty against Mexico... the is no next round, i am not going to even put myself for another devastastion.

The referee was too harsh maybe he was cold to call him racist is absurd, as for our boys i hope the learn to play as a team one day as we all can see they are playing to impress agents especially the ball waisting Teko (stupid dribbles and ever falling). i think the formartion was too weak for the Urugauy team, our boys couldnt even penetrate their wall next time let's have 3 strikers and a strong defence..France will roast us like amahotwana .

To me it has been proven that the supporter's support does not play a role in a team winning trophies.

If that was the case, Bloemfontein Celtics would have taken all the Cups there is in S.A.

Some of us like myself were ambushed and forced into supporting Bafana because if you are not, you are said to be not patriotic, proud of your country, negative and last but not least of being White.

To call that ref racist is nonsense. Yes he was harsh, and i still think the red card was inappropriate as it killed the players and they were just playing to finish the allocated 90 minutes.

Uruguay played a better game, and just like Korea did when they were playing Brazil, Bafana was also defending deeply, and tooo slow to push forward when there was an opportunity of a counter attack.

Suarez, made matters worse by falling all the time and that annoyed the heavens out of me but what can we say the ref fell for his performances and dives and blew his whistle.

2006 FIFA World Cup
Busacca was chosen to be a referee at the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany.

While refereeing a World Cup match between Ukraine and Spain, Busacca made a decision against Vladislav Vaschuk, giving the player a red card and awarding a penalty kick against Ukraine in the 47th minute of the match. Multiple angles of the infraction showed no physical contact inside the penalty area, preceded by a tug on the pants of Fernando Torres in the penalty area by Vladislav Vaschuk. David Villa of Spain slotted home the resulting penalty against Ukrainian keeper Oleksandr Shovkovsky.

In a later match in the 2006 FIFA World Cup, he was criticised for not showing the red card to Argentinian defender Gabriel Heinze after an errant throw by Argentinian goalkeeper Roberto Abbondanzieri resulted in a breakaway by Mexican striker Francisco Fonseca and a subsequent foul by Heinze. Bussacca decided to only give Heinze a yellow card, despite the Argentinian being the last man to beat.

Busacca was one of the twelve referees who remained in the play-off rounds from the quarter finals onwards.

2006 Basel Hooligan Incident
Main article: 2006 Basel Hooligan Incident
Busacca refereed an infamous Swiss Super League match on the last day of the 2005-2006 season between Basel and Zürich at St. Jakob Park in Basel. Basel, who hadn't lost at home in the past 59 league matches at St. Jakob Park, only needed a draw to secure their fourth championship in five years. The game was still tied at the 90-minute mark, but at the end of the very last minute of stoppage time, Zürich defender Iulian Filipescu scored the winning goal, immediately followed by Busacca's final whistle. At that point, many fans, mostly Basel fans, stormed the field. Basel supporters attacked Zürich players and fought with Zürich supporters. More trouble continued outside the park throughout the night.

2009 FIFA Confederations Cup
He was chosen as a referee for the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup, refereeing the United States-Brazil match on 18 June 2009 in which Busacca showed Sacha Kljestan a red card and Brazil went on to win 3-0.

2010 FIFA World Cup
He was preselected as a referee for the 2010 FIFA World Cup and refereed the game South Africa vs Uruguay on Wednesday, 16 June 2010. He controversially sent off the South African goalkeeper, Itumeleng Khune, in the 80th minute, for tripping the Uruguay striker, Luis Suárez, when he was clearly offside. This resulted in a penalty that Diego Forlan converted. South Africa Went on to loose the game 3-0, and Khune became the second goalkeeper to be sent off in World Cup history.

Typical of South Africans, not taking responsibilities for their failure to beat Uruguay. You can shift the blame to whoever but this time the buck stops with Bafana.

When we were playing Mexico, they were denied a goal, reason being that FIFA has a new rule saying there should be 2 players behind the keeper etc. And what did we South Africans do? We accepted that with open hands. We did not even go as far as googling the referee.

Truth be told, Khune deserved a red card and we went on to lose the game 3-0 and not 3-2. Segololo I don't know what you're on about, feeding people nonsense and conspiracy theories.

This is what Parreira had to say:

Posted: 2010-06-17 07:56

South Africa coach Carlos Alberto Parreira has attacked referee Massimo Busacca for some of the decisions he made in Bafana's 3-0 loss to Uruguay.

Parreira went as far as stating that the Swiss official was the worst referee at the World Cup.

"He is the worst referee, and does not deserve to be here," Parreira complained to Sportal after the match. "The scoreline does not reflect how the match was played.

"Uruguay are an excellent side, and their experience was the difference in the key moments.

"But everything is not lost, as we can beat France. All will be decided in the last match," he added.

Bafana Bafana did not lose due to that penalty being given, they were outplayed period.

The problem here is that we thought playing Uruguay was gonna be a walk in a park judging from their performance when playing France and we were suprise. If we continue undermining countries like this, France will do the same.

We're now behaving as if we know that we've got the best team in the world. Again South Africans are not known for taking responsibilities, if it's not apartheid it's something else.

Please also google most of our players and share the factual information you would find about them!

Controversy for me is when the striker like Nomvethe who only scored less than 10 goals in +/-25 games is included in our squad, maybe he paid someone.

@One and Only

The offside against Mexico had nothing to do with a new rule. It's the same offside rule as it's always been - two defenders must be in front of the attacker, not one. Khune counts as a defender so it was very much a legitimate offside. No real dispute there.

Yes, Bafana deserve the blame for not playing well, but you can't discount the Swiss ref's harsh and very dubious decision (check the replay and you'll see it was an offside even before Khune fouled Suarez) as a major contributing factor. Uruguay got another goal out of that decision, we were reduced to ten men and morale crumbled. It was a turning point in the game and pretty much destroyed any chance we had of getting back into it.

Don't come with this *bleep!* that complaining about a terrible ref decision is  South Africans shifting the blame. Every country bitches about bad ref decisions that go against us in sports. Think of the Hand of God or Korea 2002.

Bafana are ranked 80 in the world, they're not doing that bad against the top 32 teams in the world, having said this, I can honestly say I know what it feels like to lose... It is a bitter pill. Having said this, I also know that when people lose faith because their team does not win as expected or hoped and that is passed on to the team. I appeal to all South Africans to not lose faith and continue supporting our boys, regardless how heartbreaking and soul destroying last night was... they need us now more than ever! Just as we expect them to dig deep when the chips are down, we should expect the same of ourselves. For once, we as South Africans need to not try and lay blame and call for heads to roll; instead we should as one united voice say to Bafana "You make me proud no matter! We will always support you because you represent us and we would not want any other team! We are South African!" And by the way, if you were to look at sport objectively, what the point be of supporting a team and being loyal to it! Sport and support is an emotional thing to be objective is take away the fun! Leave objectivity to the experts that get paid to be such!

Okay, this is what I received today.... We need all the prayers we can get to win this one...

I am sure you understand very well the meaning of France loss against Mexico last night.

1. That means Uruguay and Mexico needs to play a 0-0 game to both qualify for the knock-out phase.

2. Even if South Africa wins by 100-0 against France, a draw for Uruguay and Mexico means South Africa and France are out

3. If Mexico beat Uruguay 1-0, South Africa needs to beat France by 5 – 0.

4. If Uruguay beat Mexico 1-0, South Africa needs to beat France by 4 – 0

5. Can South Africa beat France to start with??????????? A million dollar question

In conclusion, Bafana Bafana are out of the world cup. We are waiting for confirmation on Tuesday. Only a miracle will see us through. South Africans have 2 choices: To accept defeat right now, or wait for Tuesday hoping for a miracle. If you were a Uruguay coach or Mexican coach, you will understand the importance of playing for a 0-0 draw with your opponents, that means you must avoid attacking your opponents so that they do the same and you both qualify without stress.

"I prefer women. I am dating Veronica, she is 31 years old, she is blonde, she is beautiful," Maradona responds to a question in the post-match press conference about his habit of embracing his Argentina players.

nice so you mean those statements above (from an email I've received) are not contradicting each other? @Sslave Frankly Speaking, our chances have gone from slim to impossible. Come on, think about it now. We need to get over our boys making it through so come Tuesday we are not disappointed. That France Mexico game last night destroyed all hopes.

18 Jun 2010 10:05

then:

3. If Mexico beat Uruguay 1-0, South Africa needs to beat France by 5 – 0.

4. If Uruguay beat Mexico 1-0, South Africa needs to beat France by 4 – 0

if they draw, hofedile ke lehlohonolo.

how do we explain this, the two countries have never lost a game so far. they have drawn and won.

SA and France, has each lost one and drew one.

so if a lose is 0, a draw 1 and a win 3 , then 1+3 is better than 0+3..........

right now  it doesn't matter whether we qualify or not, what matters is that we are the host of the biggest sporting event and the global village is gathered here and the focus is here.... Great stars and prominent people are here!!! and we are in the spotlight asibancinyane nathi

It would have been nice to win and proceed to the next stage of the tournament but what the heck if we were not the hosts we were never going to participate because we did not qualify, so our boys got an opportunity to be part of the world cup, we did not deserve to be in it  so  we must be grateful that we were given an opportunity to participate, we tried, now lets move on and celebrate the tournament

okay we are not going make it to the next round....maybe we must unite again to give Bafana a grand exit, be there when they bow out, we give them the biggest applauds and blow our vuv's loud for the last for them, we are not proud of their perfomance but we are family and we can't disown them now..

I think our expectations of our boys are way too great to an extend that we loose sight of reality. When the SA national anthem was sang, everybody sang their lungs out, black, white purple, you name the colour. That in itself shook me to the core and I could only ask myself how the squad was feeling at the moment.  It's very rare we have people sing like that.

The first thing that I did when I got to the office yesterday, I looked for the Worldmap just to see where Uruguay is. The country is as big as the Western cape Province.

Anyway, all of us know that Khune's dismissal was unwarranted and that Mokoena caused a deflection. blah, blah, blah, blah. But that penalty, destroyed our boys psychologically. They got so lost and I am actually glad it happened in the dying minutes of the game.

I AM AND WILL ALSO BE 100% BEHIND OUR BOYS. WIN OR LOOSE (But what are the chances? :-) I am weearing my t-shirt, my scarf, my beanie, my car with its mirror covers and the works. They are my boys......much as they tear my heart apart.

Let's look on the bright side......France, 1998 champions have not even conceeded a goal which moves us up the table to number three. France ba tshwere Group A ko mogatleng......

This World Cup is full of upset.

I stand to be corrected my dear. But what I am saying is, I have watched so many sport tournaments (rugby and the recent friendlies leading to the world cup) but the way in which the National anthem was sung on June the 16th was epic....

Don't know whether it was euphoria of the game at hand, or the fact that our national anthem in itself is a prayer sung on a rather very important day in our history OR a combination of both!!!!!!!!!

The Fifa Disciplinary Committee is acting leniently against World Cup offenders.

The world governing body has decided not to increase the mandatory one-game bans on Bafana Bafana keeper Itumeleng Khune and Australia's Tim Cahill who picked up red cards against Uruguay and Germany, respectively.

South Africa's coach Carlos Alberto Parreira will also not be sanctioned over negative comments he made about the referee in the match against the South Americans.

Parreira said referee Massimo Busacca "was the worst referee so far" after he sent off Khune for a trip, which led to a penalty.

Parreira also said Busacca "doesn't deserve to be here" and the referee was "giving yellow cards that weren't yellow cards."

Fifa reviewed the coach's comments, but said "there was no violation of the FIFA disciplinary code," Fifa spokesman Nicholas Maingot said.

Fifa said it had not yet looked at a request by Portugal to rescind the yellow card given to Cristiano Ronaldo in Tuesday's 0-0 draw against Ivory Coast.

Guy-Roland Demel brought down Ronaldo with a sliding foul and referee Jorge Larrionda carded both for mouthing off to each other.

According to Fifa, Khune is regarded as having breached Article 48 part 1.a of the Fifa Disciplinary Code for denying the opposing team a clear goal scoring opportunity after his out stretched leg tripped Luis Suarez.

Khune will serve his one match suspension in the last Group A match against France on June 22 in Bloemfontein.

Cahill is regarded to having breached Article 48 part 1.b of the FIFA Disciplinary Code by committing a serious foul play and will serve his suspension in the Socceroos second Group D match against Ghana which takes place tomorrow.

Fifa could have increased the penalties if it found the fouls serious enough.
