Nutsman wins Strictly Come Dancing II

Home improvements DIY guy Riaan Venter - better known to SABC2 viewers as Die Nutsman - danced his way to victory in the second season finale of Strictly Come Dancing on Saturday night.

Venter and his partner Hayley Hammond beat 7de Laan actor Freedom Habede and his partner Mary Martin by a clear majority after winning both the judge and viewer votes.

Venter/Hammond scored 31 for their ballroom number and 34 for their Latin one, but it was their freestyle dance that blew the judges away - Salome Sechele was the only judge not to give them a perfect 10, giving them a 9 instead for a total of 39/40.

That gave them a total points haul for the night of 104 out of a possible 120, which was 13 points more than Hadebe and Martin.

The scoring system meant that Riaan and Hayley had 2 points and Freedom and Mary 1 point after the round of judging.

Had the viewers voted in favour of Freedom and Mary the actor would have won the competition, as the duo would have picked up 2 points to Riaan and Hayley's 1 point, tying the scores. In such an instance the person with the most viewer votes would have won, which would have been Freedom and Mary.

Host Ian von Memerty ended proceedings by thanking viewers for the big turnout this year.

"Thanks (sic) you for making us the the most watched show on Saturday nights in South Africa," he said.

Von Memerty was blatantly incorrect - Strictly Come Dancing was the most-watched show on SABC2 every Saturday night, but never came close to the bigger shows on SABC1.

Selimathunzi (1.5-million), Friends Like These (2-million), the Xhosa News (2.1-million) and the 8pm movie (between 900,000 and 1.5-million) all attracted bigger viewerships than Strictly Come Dancing, which averaged at around 1.2-million viewers per episode.

Von Memerty also announced that there will be a New Year's Eve special episode of SCD, with four celebrities taking part. No further details were given.

Strictly Come Dancing will be replaced as from next Saturday with movies, starting with The First Wives Club on 30 September.
