e.tv To Launch New CNN-Type Channel

This goss just in from a mole who says the news is 100% true: apparently e.tv - who've just been voted Best News broadcaster by TVSA readers - will be launching a new 24-hour local news channel.

It's going to go live mid-way through next year and be part of their Pay TV offering, so it'll be one of the channels on their E-Sat subscription service.

They'll be running it from their Jozi studios and from the sounds of it it'll be like CNN so it'll have news, sport, weather and special signature shows - I just made the signature shows up but I imagine it's how it'll be - sort of like CNN has Larry King etc. I'm thinking Debra Digs The Dirrt would be a good title for one of them.

Something I'd really like to see them do on the channel is a juicy Press wrap-up slot where they look at our newspapers and instead of just discussing what they have to say rather give opinionated, bold commentary on the stories as well as the media and how stories are reported/distorted. That would be a rip don't you think?

As for what their other channels will be - I'll keep you posted as soon as I hear any more news.

yip! second your idea on the press wrap-up slot, Tash. SABC claim they have one in that sunday morning tv show of theirs, 'in the best interest' or something...but i'm not convinced... they should get a round table of (smart, cynical and irreverent) people who're NOT affiliated with the press, only 1 media rep - so they get the ordinary peoples view of the crap we get fed in the papers....

Agreed on the press wrap-up thing. E-tv should have someone like John Robbie or John Qweleni who are not afraid to express their opinion. Someone who is not going to play to the public gallery.

I agree, watched the show on several occasions and I find the host does not have an opnion about anything. I think due to Snukification at the SABC they are all scared to express an opinion, which sad really.
