Celeb Q&A: Khanyisile Mbau

Fave TV show:
Girls At The Playboy Mansion with the Hugh Hefner chicks on E! and I’d have to say E!’s True Hollywood stories about these people. How they started, how they got to where they are and how their lives have changed since then.

The fashion on E! too because I’m a fashionable person so I love the fashion shows of who was wearing what, where and how.

Locally I love SABC1 where I watch a lot of soapies like Isidingo, Generations, Muvhango to see where we are in terms of acting and art and how far we’ve got.

I think that we have skill in acting but when it comes to story-line and the way we do things in our industry - it’s old-fashioned and the people who run these shows are a bit stereotyped in terms of trying new things so we’re still far behind in the industry world-wide. We’re still at a soapie level.

Certain things can’t be said on TV – for instance you can’t flaunt certain things on television but TV’s about creating a world that’s an illusion. Something that’s there but it’s not real. It’s supposed to be an imaginary world – something that makes the viewer think: “Gosh, I’d love to be like that person,”. That’s what makes a star.

Every movie that’s made in South Africa is about the struggle, if it’s not about the struggle it’s about Aids – we need to start creating Alice in Wonderland things, things that aren’t real. It’ll stop us looking like victims to the rest of the world.

Fave fictional character from any TV show/movie or novel:
Neo from the Matrix or Laura Croft. I think they’re the strongest people, with great physique, the way they move, the way they think, wow. If I had to be a superhero, I’d have to be a Sc-fi, alien fighting superhero, yeah. A kickbutt chick.

Fave quote:
Live for the moment and have no regrets. I live for that – I live it, I live it, I practice those words.

Which Reality show would you most enjoy being in?
I would probably do Survivor and I would do Big Brother. I'd enjoy pissing people off – you can’t get rid of me, but I’m there. I’d do Survivor because of the sport and the lots of people.

Same thing with Big Brother – you get to find out about people’s characters and bring out your character. I’d rather be bad on TV than good because bad is actually good.

If you were in a different profession, what would you be?
I’d probably be a teacher and I’d teach Grade 1. ABCD. To teach them to read and to have a huge impact. That’s their foundation – that’s where my foundation takes them to any level that they want to be in in life.

Without Grade 1 and knowing how to put words together, you’re just nothing. It’s the most cutest time – you have a Grade 1 coming in in January and they can’t read and by December they can read a whole book, it’s amazing.

A possession you don’t have that you’d really like:
I would love to have a farm with real cows. I’ve always had a fantasy of being on a farm in rubber boots and helping milk a cow. As much as I stay in the city, I love nature and rolling in the grass and just being a kid about it.

A moment that’s very special to you:
The first day I signed my first autograph. That was like wow, I’ve lived. It was for a woman and her two kids. They stopped me and spoke to me and knew so much about me. This kid took out her book and she had pictures of me and things I’ve said and spotted where and it was like, “Shucks, I’m blown away.”

What was the best thing about playing Doobsie in Muvhango?
You could have a bad day, vent out on everyone and there’s nothing anyone could do about it. Where you’re feared and you know it and people don’t like it but there’s nothing they can do about it. That’s how Doobsie was. It was great.

What’s the scariest thing you’ve ever done?
Whew – I’ve spent R50 000 on my hair. I did – it was for certain extensions which were from Brazil that were real hair and the products they had to use. It was R50 000 down the drain and I thought I’d get paid the following day – they called me ten minutes after my hair was done and said: “Listen, there’s a problem with the cheque’s – you’ll have to wait about a month.” My car wasn’t paid for, nothing, and I’d just had this Do. It was crazy.
