An insider-mole has told TVSA that SABC employees are receiving e-mails telling them to be aware that everyone in the organisation needs to cut costs.
Word is the e-mails are asking them to be aware of drinking less milk in their coffee and state that they will be charged for phone-calls and internet usage if they go over a certain allocated amount, whether or not they depend on these to do their jobs.
The unions are guffawing about it - when the unions meet with management to discuss payment issues everyone then gets Nescafe Gold and biscuits apparently i.e. the message being sent is: "You need to cut costs if you're a worker, but not if you're involved with management."
Other cost-cutting measures that have been introduced include the SABC's withdrawal of sponsorship and involvement from various events including the
2009 Encounters Film Festival and more recently, the
Stars of Mzansi 2009 awards. The awards have been postponed until next year.
Other shows are also being put on hold including,
So You Think You Can Dance SA 2 and
I Want To Sing Gospel 2. According to music producer and the show's lead figure Lindelani Mkhize
I Want To Sing Gospel plans to audition at the end of the year for an early 2010 premiere.
Even SABC2's tried-and-tested money spinner
Strictly Come Dancing hasn't escaped the axe of the crunch. The latest news on the upcoming sixth season is that it's been postponed. Whether this means it's happening this year or next; or not at all isn't clear.
The one show that is that is going ahead is
SA's Got Talent: the audition process will be happening soon and the premiere date is set for 13 August.
