Terry Kinney is an American actor best known for his starring role as unit manager Tim McManus on the prison drama television series Oz, from 1997-2003.

He also starred in the short-lived television series The Unusuals (2009) and NYC 22, in 2012.

Kinney co-founded the Steppenwolf Theatre in Chicago with Gary Sinise and Jeff Perry in 1976, where he directed several plays, including The Violet Hour, A Streetcar Named Desire, A Clockwork Orange, And a Nightingale Sang, Of Mice and Men and My Thing of Love and Streamers.

In New York he's directed After Ashley and Beautiful Child at the Vineyard Theatre, Eyes for Consuela for Manhattan Theatre Club and Reasons to Be Pretty for MCC Theatre's Lucille Lortel, which then transferred to Broadway and earned Kinney a 2009 Drama Desk Nomination for Outstanding Director of a Play.

He directed One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest on Broadway, which won the Tony for Best Revival of a Play.

Kinney is best known for his portrayal of Tim McManus in the prison drama Oz; additional television appearances include CSI: NY, The Good Wife, The Mentalist, The Laramie Project, Kidnapped, Wallace, That Championship Season and Canterbury's Law.

Kinney has also appeared in several feature films, including Save the Last Dance, Sleepers, Fly Away Home, House of Mirth, No Mercy, Last of the Mohicans, The Firm and Devil in a Blue Dress.

Kinney is also a founder of Steppenwolf Films along with Tim Evans and the co-founders of Steppenwolf Theatre. After directing the short film Kubuku Rides (This Is It) for Steppenwolf Films, Kinney directed his first full-length feature, Diminished Capacity.

Kinney is married to his Oz co-star Kathryn Erbe, with whom he has a daughter, Maeve (b. 1996), and a son, Carson (b. 2003). He was previously married to Elizabeth Perkins, with whom he had a child.

His hometown is Lincoln, Illinois.
