Annabeth Gish is an American actress best known for her roles in the feature films Mystic Pizza (1988) and Double Jeopardy (1999); as well as for her role as Special Agent Monica Reyes in the last two seasons of the television sci-fi series The X Files, appearing in 23 episodes from 2001-2002.
Gish began her screen career in an unusual way - as the lead character in a feature film, Desert Bloom (1986), in which she played a woman recalling her childhood growing up on a nuclear testing site.
A role in the made-for-TV movie Hero In The Family followed in the same year, and in 1987 had a major supporting role in th teen comedy/drama Hiding Out.
1988 was her breakout year, when she starred with another up-and-coming actress, Julia Roberts, in the romantic comedy Mystic Pizza. Gish was billed above Roberts in the credits, but the following year Roberts would get a major break in the film Steel Magnolias, while Gish would begin a string of little known films and made-for-TV movies.
Films Gish appeared in included Shag (1989); Coupe de Ville (1990); Silent Cries (1993); Wyatt Earp (1994); Nixon (1995); Beautiful Girls (1996); Steel (1997); and SLC Punk! (1998); until she gained widesread attention again for her role in the blockbuster thriller Double Jeopardy in 1999.
In 2001, Gish joined the cast of The X Files as Special Agent Monica Reyes after series star David Duchovny announced his intention to leave the show.
During the eighth and ninth seasons, Gish and fellow newcomer Robert Patrick became the show's principal characters.
While it is generally agreed their performances were good, ratings continued to drop with the departure of Duchovny and his dynamic with Gillian Anderson; the ninth season of The X Files became the show's last.
In 2003, Gish had a six-episode recurring role on The West Wing, playing Elizabeth Bartlet Westin, eldest daughter of President Josiah Bartlet (Martin Sheen).
Fomr 2004-2006 she continued to appear in smaller films, including Knots (2004); Gillery's Little Secret (2006); The Celestine Prophecy (2006); and Mojave Phone Booth (2006).
She also appeared in the made-for-TV movies Life on Liberty Street (2004); Detective (2005); Desperation (2006); and Candles on Bay Street (2006).
She also made a one-episode guest appearance on CSI: Miami in the 2004 episode entitled "Not Landing" (Season 2, Episode 21).
Also in 2006, Gish began a continuing major role in the 11-episode drama Brotherhood. In it she plays fictional Rhode Island State Representative Tommy Caffee's wife Eileen, who strives to maintain a model political family while struggling with adultery and drug abuse.
Gish has said that her role as Eileen Caffee is the best she's had in 22 years as an actress.
Brotherhood was been picked up for a second season of 10 episodes to air on Showtime in the US summer (South African winter) of 2007, and Gish will reprise her Eileen Caffee role.
