James Ngcobo is stage, television and film actor best known for his roles as editor Joe Dlamini on the SABC3 drama series Hard Copy (2005), and as Mojo Khumalo on the SABC2 sitcom Stokvel, from 2003-2008.
James has appeared at London's Young Vic in The Revolution, toured the United States in The Horn of Sorrow toured Britain in The Cherry Orchard and performed in SizwaBanzi is Dead at Britain's Festival Hall.
He trained with Kwa-Zulu Natal's Loft Theatre Company appearing in such productions as La Ronde, Mujaji, Horn of Sorrow and Jesus Christ Superstar.
Subsequently, he worked with Theatre For Africa in various productions including Gone by the Wind and Kwamanzi.
James moved to Johannesburg where he proved his versatility by playing characters as diverse as Jacob in La Cage aux Folles (for which he won the award for best actor in a comedy) and Estragon in Waiting for Godot.
Theatre productions include Glass Roots at the Baxter theatre, The Pen and Green Man Flashing both at the Market Theatre and A Whole in One at the Liberty Theatre on the Square.
Television includes a vast variety of roles in productions ranging from comedy to high drama. These include roles in the sitcom Schoop Schoombie, the controversial Yizo Yizo, Stokvel, Jozi Streets, Soul City and 90 Plein Street.
He also appeared in the 1999 mini-series Saints, Sinners And Settlers.
He had the lead role as editor Joe Dlamini in the drama series Hard Copy, set in the offices of a newspaper called The Bulletin. He left the show after the first season.
In 2007 Ngcobo appeared as a lead character in the drama series 90 Plein Street, playing the role of Zweli Motaung, the ANC Chief Whip.
Feature films include the Kim Basinger film I Dreamed of Africa and the Leon Schuster comedy Mr Bones. James has also appeared in the feature films Man to Man (2005) and Red Dust (2004). |

James won two Best Actor awards at the inaugural South African Film and Television Academy awards (SAFTAs) in October 2006.
He won Best Actor in a TV Drama for his role of Joe Dlamini in Hard Copy, as well as Best Actor in a Comedy for the role of Mojo Khumalo in Stokvel.
In 2007 he won the Golden Horn for Best Actor in a Comedy for the second year running, once again for his role as Mojo Khumalo in Stokvel. |
