Some greedy film executive in Hollywood thought it would be great to make another 300 movie. "But we will be smart it won't exactly be a sequel nor a prequel"...
It is basically 2 hours of "Meanwhile on the other side of the pond, this is what was happening during the first 300 movie ... " as the film tries to hoodwink us into believing that the war was about democracy (like the US tried to do with Iraq, Afghanistan etc.) and courage ... This is one of those movies one needs to really avoid unless you just enjoy seeing computer generated blood flying through the air.
Plot wise we are following General Themistocles (Australian newcomer Sullivan Stapleton) as he rallies the rest of the Greeks to war as Leonidas fights off Xerxes at the hot gate. Cersei aka Queen Gorgo (Lena Headey) is back too but don't expect any new footage of Leonidas. What we have is the stuff that was left on the cutting room floor of Leonidas.
Zack Snyder was smart enough to side-step this stinker so we have Noam Murro directing but Zack Snyder co-wrote this crap so he is not totally blameless.
Murro tries to recreate the look of the first 300, although this one looks cheap in some shots - the only good things going for this movie are the costumes and Eva Green who does her best to give her bad-girl character some spunk but then she had to be Greek leading a Persian army neh?
The only competent general in Persia, is of the fairer skin. 300 Rise of the Empire is not subtle on its white supremacy nonsense disguised as entertainment. The Persians are demonised and even poor Xerxes is made to become some evil incarnation - the devil with two feet - whilst the Greeks are noble, descendants of the gods blah blah blah.
The film is condescending to the extreme and the whole story could have happened within 30 minutes ... I really struggled to see this movie through to the end but I did. I guess there's always someone who wants to see skop, skiet and donner.
It does not have to come with a story that makes sense, it does not need to be compelling, it does not even need to worry about assaulting your common sense, it just needs to have blood and half-dressed men with muscles stabbing and killing. If you are that type, this movie is for you.
