Madiba Memorial: Why the natives were restless

When Chris Hani passed away I was 12 and going for 13. My youngest uncle drove from Mafikeng to his funeral whilst my mother and I watched it on TV. My uncle came back with memories and a placard for me that hung in my room for many years until we moved away from Mafikeng and my placard got lost in the moving.

When Madiba passed on my mother and I, now joined by my brother ,decided this time we will not experience this via TV.  We will be one with the people at the stadium.

Like many other South Africans we applied for leave, caught the buses and the train at 6 am to celebrate our father of our nation. None of us, as we woke up at 3am, had plans to boo the president, or be subjected to speeches but had the feeling that we will brave the weather to celebrate and pay respects to our Madiba like what people did for Chris Hani - pity the ANC had very different ideas.

train

At the metro rail train station (Park Station), the singing was infectious, people were in the mood to celebrate the former president and promote his ideals. I remember on more than one occasion whereby someone tried to sing ‘umshini wam” and the people were like “no no no” and changed the song.

It was also evident that most people did not know the struggle songs, due to the mix that was evident at the trains but the “comrades” amongst us tried to accommodate  those who only know ‘‘the popular songs’’. The “rainbow nation” and middle classes started toyi toying in the Parkie train platforms.

Whilst a lot of people looked on in envy as they went to work, standing on the other train platforms, I wondered how come our leaders did not make the day a public holiday to make it possible for everyone to make it to the memorial?

staduim

By 7am, as the gates opened at the staduim, the people trickled in - honestly, I was disappointed at the numbers. The rain poured but the singing was not abated aside from constant reminders to “save yourself for the main event”  as a gentleman (I never got his name) who was seated in front of me, kept reminding me.

In the spirit of Mandela whenever someone would raise “dubhulu ibhunu” there would be one or two people who would shout down the song and start a another song. Clearly the non-affiliated South Africans were outnumbered by the ANC clad comrades in the XXX strong stands who would lead song. The pick of the songs were “ Oliver tamba thetha no Botha’’ and “uMandela yo” and”Mandela my president”.

empty staduim

As the whiteys present at the stadium were being made to feel welcome. Finally the program started an hour late and the first bombshell was Cyril “Mr.Marikana” Ramaphosa was the MC. One dude was like “Why did they choose Cyril?”.

Cyril is not loved like he was during the CODESA days; his buffalo antics and more importantly his role in Marikana has left a sour taste in a lot of people's mouths. As if a sign of the cold shoulder Cyril was getting, Baleka Mbetha was recruited.

singing

Then the people who had been saving themselves to sing struggle songs with their leaders where not given an opportunity to sing during the official ceremony. The struggle tradition was not honoured.

When the crowd came up with songs, the MC would cut it short. It's like the program managers wanted a rent a crowd, not an active one. When they noticed the crowd was being restless, Baleka started her awful singing and when the crowd tried to pick up the pace they were cut short.

It’s quite telling that the poor band that brought drums who Cyril said would be given a chance to sing and celebrate left without them playing one song.

more singing

Although there was a small crowd which had arrived after 9 that started singing through the speeches most of the crowd was well behaved even the EFF group in red. Even though the sound was bad and the powers-that-be stopped the video feed in the stadium, literally leaving us to hear peoples voices and not to see the speakers properly.

In the cold and wet conditions the people in the stand had to take listening to speeches given in foreign languages whilst the translations were inaudible. It almost felt like the translation was an after thought, especially for the Brasilian and Chinese dignitaries.

the crowd

As if tired of the crowd cheering for Mbeki, Barack and Mugabe, the video feed was cut in the stadium so that those in the stadium to see the podium. The stadium had to shout “screen” for it to be able to make the AV guys to bring it back up at the beginning of Barrack speech. Dignitaries got Cheers except for  George Bush and Zuma.

Now the booing for Zuma ... it's two weeks since the etoll was launched, the leaked Nkandla report but above all, this week was a poignant one where we looked back to our father and grandfather of the nation and I think the country is slowly realizing how far Zuma has fallen from that the big tree that has fallen but claims to channel those values. Barrack's speech just rubbed it in even more.

Yesterday was a mini-Polokwane for Zuma - he was weighed and found wanting, it's like the people were like the President is letting down the former Presidents legacy whilst claiming to be the Peoples president. The substituitions that I saw for me was marked end for Zuma's honeymoon. Some of the older ladies were shocked but by the third booing they could not do anything but laugh.

program

After Barack's speech a 1/3 left of the crowd left and when the president started speaking we left too. For the program was supposed to end at 3pm and at 3pm the President speech was just starting. The mood back was more sombre than the trip too. This time there was no singing but mixed feeling.

The train back was filled with lot of conversation on how Zuma has let down the legacy of Madiba and should do the honourable thing of stepping down and not another term. I wonder what the President made of the boo’s?

I wonder what the other countries must think of South Africans now.. As much as I don't like Jacob Zuma, it wasn't the right place and time for that booing. Its almost elections again, so show your opinion at the booths. Why air it open for the whole world to see? Disgusted.

Darren24 if the crowd had sang mshini wam what message would that have sent? i think it was a right moment for the people to say "No" and send a clear statement.Plus the memorial was not in the spirit of what the crowd had come through. i dont know if you read the entire blog but the people did not get what they wanted

I followed the memorial on Twitter, and people even there seem to be worried about what the rest of the world think about us, as if they dont have their own issues as well...

There was no better time to express frustrations, and im wondering if it was planned or just an imprmptu response.

I remember how,at one point, Vavi and his friends touted JZ as the next Mandela, as " he had a commoners' touch, and listens wery well". Quite symbolic that at Mandela's memorial service we all remembered the phony we now left with.

@ Darren24.. I support your opinion.  The platform South Africans used to express their views was not right.  The day was dedicated to give honour for what the Former President had done for us.  What message, as SA citezens are we potraying?  I for one do not support President JZ decisions, but booing him at such respected event, was totally a turnoff.

Let us not spoil the wonderfull memories Mr Neslon Mandela left for us.

If people are concerned more about the international audicance than the locals than the locals who braed the rain and cold ... i have no sympathy for the President .I hope the powers that be take this opportunity to reflect

I was at the stadium and I share your sentiments @tha - bang. It's as if they wanted to please all the dignitaries and i'm glad that we sang the struggle songs before the ceremony started, otherwise the experience would have been worse.

I felt bad for Zuma but he deserves it. We have been taken for granted for far too long and if the ANC doesn't recall him now then there is no hope for them at all.

Zuma was Pissssssseeeeddddddd not so by the booing but by the cheering Comrade President Mbeki got............. that was a dagger through his heart..... if he has one.... but as much as I think The memorial could have been better and allow public participation Pres Zuma deserved all the boooing and hacking, he is a disaster for a president! he needs to do the dignified thing and step down at the end of his term!

Zuma is doing the opposite of what Tata wanted for this country.. he is selfish thats why Nkandla looks like a palace and look at Qunu and after all the hard work tata did. Look at how many wives does zuma have and we have to suffer and pay tax for him and his family.... Im sorry to his fans but he can rot in helll for all i care.

I Also say... ZUMA...ULAYEKILE. you deserve all that boong you got. infact people should have brought veggies with them.. and throw them in the pitch whilst you were talking. you are such a disgrace of a president. ever since you got into the president seat. ive never ever been proud of saying "my president" Step down and you will see... ANC will get more votes than it did in the previous elections. stay on and see also how ANC's votes will drop. Some of us are ANC to the bone. but ke not having confidence in the leader, leads us to not voting at all because we cant vote for other parties, we are ANC

I am actually surprised the crowd stopped at booing the inept clown called Zuma? I was expecting someone to pelt him with rotten tomatoes. The does not deserve any respect. Respect is earned not given on a platter. The man is destroying the country and some people are talking of respect. There is no right time to boo. It must be spontaneous. Well done to the booers.

12 Dec 2013 09:18

The booing was just rude and there is no way to justify it. People are uhnappy with Zuma agreed but this was not the time nor the place.

Who ever put Cyril as the MC subotaged Zuma 100%, Cyril took advantage of the situation to show his leadership qualitites and most people were taken by him.

Barack's speech was moving mostly because he is such a good public speaker, i was very disapointed in Zuma speech especially for a person who has worked directly with Mandela. Whoever wrote that speech should be fired nje, im not gonna talk about the 37 bold font size #HidesVeryFar.

Zuma honestly should stop trying to be an academic he isnt, he should use his qaulities to his best ability he jus died on that stage.

Im not even one of our neighbouring countries got chance to say something. Felt China and Brazil should have just left a note. Would have also liked to see Mbeki and De Clerk say something but Im told due to protocol they couldnt.

Also would have been nice to have one or two ordinary South Africans who have been positively influenced by Mandela and are doing good work for their communities/the country.

Ms Opininated i dont think theres ever a perfcet or right place to boo the president, i think it was good it happened when it did.If Zuman and the ANC are one with the people they should ask themselves why would the people boo the president instead of sing mshini wam?

as for the sign language dude...ja nee the less said about that saga the better

I say well done to the booers too. And I dare say, Madiba would not have a had a problem with the people booing, he would have been more concerned about the reasons for which they are booing.....As for hiding our dirty laundry from the world...*sigh*...I call that BS. How on earth does hiding dirty laundry from the world help us? Expose the filth, expose the sin, its the one sure way of getting the homeowners to clean up. Ask our very struggle heroes (ANC et al), crying out on world stages is one of the effective methods they used to bring down apartheid. "Its our party we can boo if we want" lol, one of the articles I read on this matter which I agree with...@ Tha-bang, thank you for sharing the eye witness perspective.

The people that say that wasnt the right platform, which platform is right? Is there any platform? I guarantee you JZ will not be in any public gatherings from now till after elections and remember ANC claims he doesnt debate? When Mandela fought the struggle he did so to the eyes and ears on internationals too..South Africans deserve better than Jkop and his people. A few years ago Mbeki was booed in durban infront of the Indian Prime Minister and Zuma didnt do a thing, Zille was booed las month and he still didnt do a thing. I like the fact that its the ANC supportes that booed him more..

i heard dat the company dat hired the interpreter has gone AWOL how embarassing. As 4 jkop i was booing with them, how can he expect us 2 pay 4 his lifestyl and wives. I can bet dat milions r spent on him and his wives. A pool worth 500k haai, can he even swim nje

the 'uyang bamzela' ...'umshini wam' president...its time to step down...Im sure JZ saw that south africa has had enough of his leadership. I wonder if we there will ever be a leader who will continue with mandela's legacy..

I don't care what other countries think of us trust me we're doing well . The booers where simply expressing that they will not bow down to anyone. I don't wanna vote and I won't vote for any other p/party but the ANC so Zuma will step down before April. The problem is not the ANC the problem is Zuma.
