Season 54

Miss South Africa is an annual South African beauty pageant which is aired as a television special, in which women from around the country between the ages of 18-25 compete to win the title, which they hold for a year.

The pageant began in 1956 and has been held annually ever since (with the exception of 1983, the only year in which there has been no pageant). The winner of the pageant traditionally represents South Africa at the Miss World pageant, and often at the Miss Universe pageant as well.

The 54th annual Miss South Africa pageant took place in the Sun City Superbowl on Sunday 12 December, 2010. It was broadcast live on DStv's Mzansi Magic channel from 17h30 - 19h00, preceded by a Red Carpet Special from 17h00.

Miss South Africa 2010

Miss South Africa took place in the Sun City Superbowl on Sunday 12 December, 2010. For the first time in the pageant's history it was aired live on a pay-TV channel, DStv's Mzansi Magic, after the SABC lost the live broadcast rights.

It also featured a red carpet build-up, hosted by former Miss South Africa Tatum Keshwar, from 17h00 - 17h30.

This year's Miss South Africa competition aimed to promote goodwill, friendship and understanding as well as promote South Africa as a prime tourist destination - a land filled with natural beauty, diversity of culture, magnificent landscapes, extreme leisure activities and friendly people.

There were four headline acts this year: the Bala Brothers, Brian Temba, La Vuvuzela and Elvis Blue and L'loyd Cele, the 2010 Idols winner and runner-up.

The designers for each of the categories were:

Opening Sequence: Gideon
Daywear: Jenni Button
Swimwear: Dax Martin
Haute Couture: Thula Sindi, Warrick Gautier, JJ Schoeman
Eveningwear: Jenni Button

The judges were:

Sonia Raciti-Oshry: Former Miss SA and Principal Judge
Paledi: Fashion Designer
Sonia Booth: Model and former Miss SA 1st Princess
Yolisa Phahle: Channel Director, M-Net Special Interest Channels
Asanda Sizani: Fashion Editor for Drum Magazine
Kieno Kammies: 702 Talk show host and Journalist

Michelle McLean and ProVerb hosted Miss SA 2010, with former Miss SA Tatum Keshwar as host on the red carpet. Nonhle Thema was supposed to host but had to withdraw due to work commitments. Her first replacement, Pabi Moloi, also withdrew at the last minute.
