These are the primetime adult television viewing figures for September 2016.

These ratings represent the Top 20 shows on the free-to-air channels for the month and the Top 30 shows on DStv.

If you can't see the listing below, then click this link to access them in a document: Top shows on TV: September 2016

Special Notes

Notice how the viewership for the Ashes to Ashes season finale on Friday, 2 September was very close to Gold Diggers 2 on Tuesday, 6 September: 2,783,999 viewers for Ashes and 2,649,378 viewers for Gold Diggers.

This indicates a loyal viewership for the timeslot. Will it remain loyal for the run of Gold Diggers? Tune in for next month's TAMS to see.

For further explanation on the TAMS, please see: The TAMS ratings explained.

Channels in this post: SABC1, SABC2, SABC3, e.tv, Mzansi Magic

Hao, how did eNews Direct get so many viewers out of the blue?

I thought real talk with Anele would make it to the top 20. Live Amp is doing well besides the obstacle of 30 min, UMX show is a waste of airtime, they should get rid of it. 7 del aan  doing well in the new time slot, the omnibus too wow!! Isidingo's ancestors are strong! compared to its rivals and the efforts pulled for the show, the performance in underwhelming

Let's not get it twisted, there was soccer on SABC 1 on Friday 2 Sept and on Tues 6 October. Generations wasn't around on both those dates so both Ashes and Gold Diggers benefitted from its absence. Hence the midly high ratings.

@Ms Op Real Talk with Anele is playing at the wrong time, I would like to watch it but on that time I'm still on the road.

@MsOpinionated Real Talk may be getting the numbers to make it to the list but we'll never know because of the limitations of these lists. They only cover shows between 17h30 and 22h00 so Real Talk is out of the equation totally.

It's one of the big problems we complained about when the Broadcast Research Council made the changes at the start of the year because these lists can give the wrong impression of what's happening with a show.

It's the same thing that deziclesthagawd is talking about with Ashes and Gold Diggers. The numbers reflect the highest episode of the month and not the average of each show for the month so the numbers listed here are higher than usual because of the impact of the soccer.

In previous months, Ashes hasn't made the list if there hasn't been soccer on SABC1 so it's unlikely that Gold Diggers will too. It will say a lot for it if it does. Shows on e.tv are also impacted by movies which regularly do well so they're pushing shows off the list.

Thanks for the heads-up on 6 September dezicles - we thought it was the Monday but it was the Tuesday. We've changed it in the notes.
