Training Opportunities For Aspirant Writers

The National Film & Video Foundation (NFVF) is offering a Free part-time course to individuals interested in training as script editors in the fields of film and television.

Successful applicants will go through an intensive Sediba “Spark” Screenwriter’s Training Programme. During the course, attendees will be teamed up with a writer assigned to guide with concept development and mentoring.

The training programme runs for four months, comprising one workshop per month held over weekends.

Requirements

• Relevant tertiary qualifications or extensive experience in the industry.
• Experience writing intellectually challenging and coherent reports, articles and/or essays for a degree programme, newspapers or magazines, a web blog, or a creative or professional writing programme.
• A satisfactory understanding of storytelling based on one or a combination of the following: the study of drama, film, television or literature through a university honours degree course; through the completion of a screenwriting or script editor’s professional development programme; experience as a published short story writer or novelist, a storyline writer, scriptwriter or script editor for a television drama series or feature film screenplay.
• Vision for making a big impact on South African film and television drama.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Proficiency in at least one of the indigenous South African languages as well as English.
• Demonstrated ability to work efficiently and effectively to meet tight deadlines.
• Demonstrated ability to collaborate and work in teams.
• Demonstrated ability to take initiative.

Desirables

• Broad knowledge of current trends in contemporary fiction, theatrical films and TV drama.
• Experience working under pressure, good time management, administrative knowledge and working in teams gained through working in a crew, support role in a film or television production team.
• A creativity and well-developed imagination.
• Excellent computer skills.
• Good negotiation skills.

How To Apply

The following information should be included in your application to the Sediba script editor's programme in order for it to be reviewed successfully:

1. Curriculum Vitae - please ensure that you identify your level of proficiency in English and the indigenous African language(s) that you speak, read and write according to the categories: excellent, competent, or fair.

2. A one-page motivation letter stating your passion for the type of film and television dramas you seek to make and why, your knowledge and experience of the theory and practice of writing for the novel, the dramatic form in theatre, radio, television or for cinema.

3. Two writing samples, this may include a report, article, essay or other piece of writing that will demonstrate your writing skills.

Is this course not going to be offered in 2009, I would like to  participate, I have a great passion for writing and the Television Industry as a whole more especially on the technical side of things.
