Tonight's 3rd degree (Tuesday, 20h00 on e.tv) looks at racism at the University of the Free State.

From the press release:

There's been widespread outrage at the racist video filmed by students from the University of the Free State. In the video, five university cleaners are forced to participate in inhuman and derogatory actions including eating stew drenched with urine.

Hostels at the university have been segregated up until now - even though we are fourteen years into our democracy. After failing to integrate the residences in the late 1990's because of mass protests, the university's council decided that 2008 would be the deadline to achieve this.

As a form of protest, the students decided to film the video. This week on 3rd Degree, we show the full 12 minutes and invite members of the South African Students organisation and the Freedom Front Plus to debate what is happening with our youth.

I am sorry, that was a thinly veiled assasination attempt masquerading as TV journalism by Debra Patter. It was pathetic. If you go into an interview with such an agenda then be open about it and let the person you are interviewing speak. Speaking over them is such a cheap trick.

I am a white student at the UJ campus. I was born in 1979, so I remember apartheid. What happened in the the "Free" State shocked me. Why are people still so many years after the end of apartheid still so hatefull. I spoke to another white student just after the racist incedent and she said that one of the reasons she didn't want to go to the Univeristy of the Free State was because of the racisism that still takes place and this was coming from a white girl about the white people in the "Free" State!
As a B.Ed student myself, my heart goes out to those who were affected by such irresopnsable students.

I unfortunately only caught the last few minutes of the show so I cannot accuratly recall the names of the guests but I was appauled to notice that the white guest could not even bring himself to look into the eyes of the black guest when he was being addressed! My blood boils! How can any self respecting person show so little respect!

Okay nou, I've got a few questions myself. According to whom is this video a racist act because it seems to me that they all had a lot of fun and how can you say that it was urine when all you see is a yellowish fluid.

As for the attack on why we should have a choice in whether we want to stay in the same room as black students, well here is why....

IT IS CALLED HUMAN RIGHTS, MY RIGHT TO CHOOSE WHOM I WANT TO ASSOCIATE WITH AND MY RIGHT TO DECIDE WHO I LET INTO MY LIFE.

If you force something upon someone then you take these RIGHTS away from them. THIS IS NOT LEGAL!!!!!!!!!!

Oh but I forgot these laws only seem to apply to ONE RACE in SA. And this is not RACISM, WHY DOES IS IT SEEM YOU ONLY SEE WHITE PEOPLE AS RACISTS??????

What do you think will happen if I started a WHITE COLLEGE FUND or A WHITE ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT Company, I'll be seen as a racist!!!

Well this seems like racism to me.

Today as I was driving home I saw a car standing in the middle of the road with the passenger, a black male, standing next to the road and urinating right in front of someone’s house. And this is a HUMAN act????

One final question for the presenter of the show - >Does your "maid" or gardener stay in your house, if not, is this by choice, your choice, DID YOU EVEN OFFER HER OR HIM THE CHOICE????????

I would like to just say that I am NOT a racist as everybody reading this may think, I am merely a race conscious realist!!!!!!

SO PLEASE STOP FIGHTING AFRIKANERS TRYING TO PROTECT THEIR CULTURE AND START BUILDING
THE COUNTRY, IT IS FALLING APART WHILE YOU ALL WASTE YOUR TIME TRYING TO CHANGE OUR VIEWS

I feel sad that South Africa is still so fragile and I was hoping threw the years things would change. I’m a 21 year old white female, born in 1986: The year that black school children died and suffered for there rights. We as whites only want the best for the country and its people, black and white but then these four boys go and do this to the workers and create a division again by racism.
Black people are humans, white people are humans, and we are the same so please stop the color battle. We must learn to judge people by there actions and not there color. If a white or black person is rude to me I will dislike that person because of his/her actions, not the color they are color. Its not white peoples fault for what happened; it’s those four boys that are to blame and I they get what they deserve because they are fuelling racism. I don’t know why they are so sick.

I also feel that black people are also racists and white people have been taking it for many years because we felt like we had to because of the appertaid and what the white government and army did to the blacks, but I am not keeping quiet any more and so should all us white people because when black people cry racism, so should we when it happens to us. I wish we where all color blind

Lets be clear, I condemn the video, its content and its intent in the strongest terms. However, the blatantly one-sided way in which Patta tries to force her "personal" agenda makes a mockery of objective journalism. Contrary to what I assume she is trying to achieve, one cannot help feeling some sympathy for the white participant, who was not even shown the courtesy of being allowed to finish a sentence in answer to questions posed to him. Her conduct which is blatantly discriminatory and prejudiced, makes her NO BETTER than those she is condemning !!! Regarding Patta's grasp of our country's constitution, the right to Freedom of Association is GUARANTEED, as are the right to dignity etc, etc. Denying this right, to members of ANY RACE, is unconstitutional and contributes to the racial debacle that we are now faced with. A few years ago I stopped watching Patta's show because of her shocking and prejudiced handling of debates. I think Im going to take a break from her for another few years. Maybe eTV should consider getting another host for the show who can handle such sensitive debates with intelligence and objectivity. Perhaps then the show will have the desired effect of presenting all the points of view, allowing participants to state their cases, and not underestimating its viewers' intelligence by allowing them to form their own opinions, after having heard all the facts.

What a joke and they want to call that journalism. Debora Patta's attempt at trying to be hard edged is pathetic. This was not a debate but a tag team assault. The program was suppose to debate the state of our youth, but ended up being another blame the whitey spectacle.

It was so predictably unfair to see how the guy from the South African Students organisation could say what he wanted to without interruption, but the minute the guy from Freedom front plus' turn came up it was interruption after interruption by Patta. She did not even allow him to answer her questions fully as his answers did not fit her agenda which was to portray whitey as the bad guy.

I just wish true honest journalism still existed in this country. I long for an honest "say it like it is" debate about the real issues in this country.

I will however say the following: this video is absolutely "boggles the mind" stupid, but what really pisses me off is the amount of airtime it enjoyed as opposed to the pregnant woman that was hijacked and shot in the stomach or the 12 year old girl that was repeatedly raped by members of the SAP.

So, if Patta wants to know what is wrong with the white youth of today, refer her to the double standards and anti-white laws our youth have to face on a daily basis. The bleak non existing future career opportunities facing our youth after study, that is for those who are lucky enough to afford to go study. The hate crimes on whites and crime in general, the incompetence of our corruptible government and the amazing and wonderful talent of the media for prioritizing the truth.

This is what is bothering our youth and while the above status quo is maintained, the relationship between black and white in this country will never be normal. I am passed apologies, I wont apologise any longer.

How you can you call it a debate if that pretentious presenter already made up her mind about the situation in the beginning of the program.

Debora kept her mouth shut whenever the black guy made a comment, comments like comparing the situation to slavery. SLAVERY?! Honestly, the racism comparison I can partialy accept as an excuse by them because of their narrow minded approach to any situation, but how does that video symbolize slavery? And yet, Debora just lets him go on with his mindless theory.

So the white guy steps in, starting with a valid point about how you are allowed to choose who you want to socialize with and he immediatly gets shot down by Debora, not even getting a chance to express his point of view, followed by Deborah asking him what his problem is, and then telling him his out of time. Maybe if he actualy had a chance to speak he could have finished!

And now the poor guy gets attacked from both sides by an over exaggerating black guy and an unbaised unproffesional drama queen trying to feel important by disagreeing with everything that the white man said. SHE IS A COWARD!

And I just love how they are playing the 'urinating on the food' card around every corner for their conveinience, even though it was clearly not urine and the liquids came from a waterbottle. Do you see how corrupt our information system is? The media is forcing you to believe something without supplying any facts, they provide false information to the general public, to alter their perception of the situation

But anyways, my views on the video. Was it racist, no. Was it slavery,definatly not. Was it a joke, yes. A very distastefull joke, but a joke none the less. I pull pranks on my black AND white friends, not because I think less of them, but because it is amusing.

I was actually dragged there by some friends coz i personally find Oscar movies dreadful (Okay..maybe the so-called acting per Oscar standards but,..eishhh). I honestly cant really recommend it coz i was kinda enjoyin' the action/suspense and all, but towards the end it just didn't make any sense and it has an abrupt ending...JUST LIKE THAT! Left me pondering.............

@Afrikaner I’ve got a lot to say to you, I actually need to have a one on one session with you. That definitely was urine; if you don’t drink enough water urine does get a yellowish colour. As for being able to choose who you want to stay with yes you have a right, but that’s a university, the hostels are property of the university you obey the rules if you don’t want to stay in the hostel you can find a place outside the university. You can’t use the word force because nobody is forced into staying there you have a choice not to stay in the hostel.

It always amazes me how white people have always potrayed themselves as the superior race, more intelligent...blah blah blah, but when they have to defend these claims, they come out with literally nothing whatsoever, they basically lack content, make un-educated, thoughtless statements, you would swear they never went to school, they don't know South African history, the only history they know is that 'my great grandfather built that farm, this is our country...blah blah blah...this is an observation I have made throughout my inter-actions with them way back at school. We would have the same debates with these kids about politics etc.. and honestly don't know anything. I mean, i see this also on facebook where they argue all this black/white ish, they really have nothing concrete to say, just make thoughtless foolish claims. I mean you how it is when you really want to hear what someone else has to say and all you hear is that "i'm better than you" gibberish, it irritates the hell out of me.

I saw the video last night and have a lot to say about it and not Debra's presenting skills.

what i saw there, was pure racism, and a lot of you will say that those women participated out of their own free will but you must understand where they come from(apartheid era). i bet those boys will not have asked black students from our generation because they were going to take it further and also because they know better.

I do blame apartheid for all these (yeah I know you can crucify me for this but it's a fact, a fact that some of you might not want to acknowledge but it is a FACT). just think of how this country could have been if there was no apartheid.

If it was not for apartheid we would not have these kind of videos, AA, BEE and the likes.

Yes we need to move on, but it's easier said than done. can we do it, well i'm not too sure, what i know is that, we need to work together as blacks and whites to rebuild this country. it's a far-fetched dream. I guess we'll have to keep on dreaming, maybe our dream will come true some day.

for some silly reason I expected most white people to have constructive responses and to be able to see both sides of the coin ..even if its trying to understand what those boys are going thru...yeah i guess they are heroes to some other white foolkes but I doubt they feel good about themselves ight now....and having said that...I think these responses serve to show what kind of society we live in where some white people are walking time-bombs just wating to explode because they are NOt over the whole apartheid thing...

I watched the show last night and was disgusted and angered by the following argument/ conservation;
One student: Maak klaar, you bitch
Cleaning Lady: Ek is klaar baas
One student: is jy klaar gemaak
Cleaning lady: Ja baas

Judging from the way that lady responded, its clear that to her, a white man is always a baas and is always right. I blame apartheid for this and I also beleive that it is our duty as youth (black and white), to make sure that those stereotypes are eraised from our elders. That we show our elders that we different from the old goverment that treated some people like *bleep!* and some like royalty.

hey hey people it seems everyone here is racist all of a sudden. the point here is that what those students did was wrong whether they urinated on the food or not , what they did was wrong!!!
It doesnt help that everyone is pulling the race card and attacking other races. This is exactly what is fuelling racism in this country coz ngoku instead of commenting on the video now everybody is being hatefull and that will get us nowhere fast. Those boys need to be disciplined and so do those cleaners by the way. All the participants in that video are old enough to know the difference between wrong and right. and jokes are meant to be funny not silly u just dont do jokes like that. Anyway I hate this whole issue and the way it is being handled!!!!

I know it can be depressing sometimes to talk about these deep issues that affects us but talking helps. well unless the movie is about racism(we can't talk fashion and entertainment all the time.)

I am a bit of an idealist, so naturally, I am against the idea of segregation. Racial tension is inevitable with integration, but the only thing that can ease the tension is if we cohabit. That way, I would like to think we will be able to see each other beyond the surface (this meaning skin colour).

Of course we have rights, and of course Integration should not be imposed. However I think we should make a conscious effort to make it work. I seriously don’t see the harm in people of different colour sharing space. People want to belong and they will naturally want to socialise with a group that they feel is on par with themselves, but I don’t think that they should go out of their way to separate themselves from other.

Look, I am a black girl, I won’t be able to totally understand were everyone is coming from, but they should know that the consequences of segregation will catch up with them, because life goes beyond campus.

Are Black people really that bad??

The thing is, we are already aware of the issues hindering change, and bringing them up without providing solutions only fuels resentment.

Saydi you make it sound as if black (previously lit) people dont get raped, I suggest you read the papers. the majority of rape victims in SA are black kids due to lack of security in black communities, (in most cases).
Rape and crime can never be compared to racism. And you sound sound as if criminals are only black people. Glen Aglliotti, Tys Pretorius (the child molester), Bret Kebble, to mention just a few are as black as a snow.

okay......i ddnt get to watch this nor engage in the dabates last year. But the current debates regarding Jansen's decision got me interested. So i looked 4 the vid on youtube....and uhm i had lots of questions which reading this blog has helped me answer.
Sponono,maddie le andi01,ur opinions stood out for me...i totally agree with you and i hope ur opinions havent cahnged over the past year.
I defs dont think that not talking about this issues is a solution,so im glad if this article was ever disabled,it has been "enabled" again.
Its interesting tht we are having the same debates/arguments tht americans had especially in the 80s regarding race. Thoughtleader, iol,timeslive etc..every issue boils down to race. This is real,ignoring it doesnt help. We need to acknowledge and work with the situation as it is if we cant get rid of it...which wont be anyday now.
I certainly wonder what the race situation will be a couple of generations from now.
