In last night's Idols:

From the press release:

With the musical theme of “Best Of South Africa”, the Top 7 finalists set out to make their own South African musical history.

The Idols cameras had followed them home last week, so in addition to singing some of our nation’s greatest music, the contestants also shared their favourite parts of South Africa with the audience - their home towns.

carla

Carla

Carla Louw was up first, and she channeled the young Claire Johnston with “Special Star”, Mango Groove’s 1989 mega-hit dedicated to Spokes Mashiyane, the king of Kwela.

“I’m really a big fan of yours,” Dave admitted. “I hope Claire [Johnston] was watching because I think she’d be very proud.” Mara agreed. “Watch out Claire Johnston - here comes Carla Louw!” she shouted.

“You’re back with a vengeance,” said Gareth. “Just goes to show what a good choice of song can do,” Randall lectured.

Jody

Jody Williams selected “Secrets”, by Jamali. Jamali has special significance to this season of Idols: one of the three singers, Jacqui Carpede, is Björn Blignaut’s girlfriend and represented Jamali in the audience during the show.

“Welcome back!” Dave praised Jody and said that she had redeemed herself after last week. “I was a little bit harsh on you last week, and this week you proved to me that you are such a talented young singer,” Mara made peace.

“I still say that we’re going to see you in the final,” Gareth predicted. “You’re very good and over time you will get better - at this stage you should start working on getting a more rounded tone,” Randall advised.

Jacqui from Jamali said it was one of the best renditions of the song she had heard so far.

086 22 777 11, or SMS “Jody” to 34680.

Tender

Tender Mavundla honoured the late Brenda Fassie with the rallying cry “Vul'indlela” - which very appropriately translates as “Clear the path” or “Make way”.

“Tender, I would like to say to your mother, whom we saw in that insert, that ‘your daughter is an amazing star in the making - twelve months from now things are going to be very different in this business thanks to her,” complimented Dave.

“You’re a star my baby,” Mara raved. “You reminded me of Brenda, but you gave it your own interpretation. “Every week you are improving and I can’t wait for next week, I loved you this week,” said Gareth.

“A few weeks ago I said another performer was the best singer that we’ve ever had on the show,” said Randall, “and I would have to say you’re the best performer we’ve ever had on the show.”

086 22 777 03, or SMS “Tender” to 34680.

Andriette

Andriëtte Norman dreamed an “African Dream”, the Alan Lazar composition that Vicky Sampson has made one of the country’s most recognizable anthems.

“When you’re as old as me, some songs you’ve heard one too many times,” Dave admitted, “but with that performance, I could hear you sing that all night.” Mara said it was increasingly difficult for her to crit Andriëtte: “Every week you’re getting better and better, and you’re so comfortable - you sound like a professional.”

“Jislaaik, maar jou mense in Brackenfell gaan baie gelukkig wees vanaand,” Gareth complimented. “I absolutely hate that song, but I absolutely love you,” Randall swooned.

Vicky Sampson herself was in the audience to cheer on the new generation of South African stars and she said Andriëtte had done her proud. “You did it so beautifully,” she praised.

086 22 777 06, or SMS “Andriëtte” to 34680.

Björn

Björn Blignaut is a big fan of singer, songwriter, producer and arranger Ringo Madlingozi and chose Ringo’s hit, “Sondela”.

“I always thought of you as a consummate professional, but you let slip tonight - you can’t stand here and talk about your girlfriend in front of all these chicks!” Dave teased. “Don’t want to compare you with Ringo but for me, you didn’t give me the song,” Mara criticized.

“I completely disagree with Mara,” Gareth affirmed. “We’ve reached the stage where you simply have to do your best, and the truth is if you are here next week, you’re going to have to outperform yourself to compete with the other contestants,” Randall warned.

086 22 777 14, or SMS “Björn” to 34680.

Daniel

Daniel Büys found special meaning in the “peace, love, tolerance” lyrics of the Just Jinjer hit, “What He Means”. Just Jinjer is arguably South Africa’s best musical export at the moment - they’re currently based in the States, but will return to the homeland for the 46664 concert in December.

“Art Matthews writes songs that are hard to sing because he’s such a great singer,” Dave commented, “but you did that justice.” Mara called Daniel the comeback kid. “Your second really good week in a row,”

Gareth commented. “You’ve definitely outperformed yourself this week,” even Randall praised, giving Dan his first full house of positive comments.

086 22 777 09, or SMS “Daniel” to 34680.

Munro

Munro du Toit closed the show with a double dose of patriotism with the Prime Circle hit “Hello Hello”, which was adopted by the national cricket team as their team song!

“You rock, dude,” Dave said simply. “Brilliant performance - I love the way you entertained the crowd,” Mara praised.

“The best singing competition in the country is back,” Gareth rejoiced. “Everyone tonight did a really, really good performance,” Randall agreed.

086 22 777 12, or SMS “Munro” to 34680.

Mmmm, they all did reasonably okay, not sure who's going tonight, basically it depends on who's the least popular.
