Coming up on Sunday's Idols:

From the press release:

One of the highlights of any Idols season is the Spectacular with the musical theme “Best Of South Africa”. Not only will the Top 7 Idols contestants honour their South African musical heritage this weekend at the recording of the Top 7 Spectacular on Friday, 2 November, but they’ll also take viewers to some of their favourite spots in South Africa.

In no particular order, these are the songs the Top 7 contestants are preparing this week:

Carla Louw is channeling the young Claire Johnston with “Special Star”, Mango Groove’s 1989 mega-hit dedicated to Spokes Mashiyane, the king of Kwela. 086 22 777 13, or SMS “Carla” to 34680;

Daniel Büys found special meaning in the “peace, love, tolerance” lyrics of the Just Jinjer hit, “What He Means”. Just Jinjer is perhaps South Africa’s best export at the moment. They’re currently based in the States, but will return to the homeland for the 46664 concert in December. 086 22 777 09, or SMS “Daniel” to 34680;

Jody Williams selected “Secrets”, by Jamali. Jamali has special significance to this season of Idols: one of the three singers, Jacqui Carpede, is Björn Blignaut’s girlfriend and will represent Jamali in the audience on Friday night. 086 22 777 11, or SMS “Jody” to 34680;

And speaking of Björn Blignaut: he is a big fan of singer, songwriter, producer and arranger Ringo Madlingozi and will be performing Ringo’s hit, “Sondela”. 086 22 777 14, or SMS “Björn” to 34680;

Munro du Toit serves a double dose of patriotism with the Prime Circle hit “Hello Hello”, which was adopted by the national cricket team as their team song! 086 22 777 12, or SMS “Munro” to 34680;

Andriëtte Norman is dreaming an “African Dream”, the Alan Lazar composition that Vicky Sampson has made one of the country’s most recognizable anthems. Ms Sampson will also be in the audience Friday night to cheer on the new generation of South African stars. 086 22 777 06, or SMS “Andriëtte” to 34680;

And Tender Mavundla will close the show with the late Brenda Fassie’s “Vul'indlela” - which very appropriately translates as “Clear the path” or “Make way”. 086 22 777 03, or SMS “Tender” to 34680.

It promises to be an inspiring show, and tickets are on sale now from Computicket at R60 for seats and R40 for standing tickets. The Spectaculars are recorded on Friday nights at the Ellispark Arena in Johannesburg.

The Idols Spectaculars are broadcast on M-Net on Sunday at 17:30 and the Results Shows on Mondays at 19:00. Voting will open every Sunday at the start of the broadcast on M-Net and viewers can vote via landline, SMS, MXit or on the Idols website at www.mnet.co.za. Voting costs R2,02 per minute or part thereof. SMS costs R2 per SMS. SMS and landline votes are limited to 100 per phone, per contestant. Voting on MXit is free and is limited to 10 votes per voting period. Voting on the website is free. Website voting for registered website users is limited to one vote per hour.
