In last night's Idols:

From the press release:

Björn

First up was Björn Blignaut, who performed Survivor’s iconic “Eye Of The Tiger”. “It had its moments,” said Dave. “When I saw your song choice I thought it would be a really tough challenge and you did a better job than I thought. But it was a bit inconsistent.” Mara praised Björn with a “I’m still hooked on you baby!”

Gareth noted that rock takes a lot of grit and determination – “I wanted it to be harder, more powerful,” he said. “It was good, but it wasn’t great.” Randall agreed that it was “passable”, but he thought that Björn didn’t “bite into the bones of the song.” 086 22 777 14, or SMS “Björn” to 34680.

Tender

Tender Mavundla chose a hit by the winner of the first American Idol, Kelly Clarkson: “Anytime”. “You have so many great assets as a performer – you could be one of the biggest stars ever,” Dave praised. “Tender, you have everything – you’re brilliant baby!” Mara raved.

“Every time you come up here and sing, I have fun,” said Gareth. Randall reminded the contestants that Idols is a marathon rather than a sprint, “and you’ve peaked at the right time,” he commended Tender. 086 22 777 03, or SMS “Tender” to 34680.

Yolanda

Next up was Yolanda Nabo with Avril Lavigne’s breakout hit “Sk8erboi”. “It started off OK and I’m pleased that you’ve come out of your shell,” said Dave, “but things started to go somewhat wonky, vocally.” “You’re a ballad singer,” said Mara, “you were not in time to the rock and roll.”

“That was such a mismatch,” Gareth lamented. Randall agreed. “You were way behind the rhythm and flat,” he summarised. 086 22 777 01, or SMS “Yolanda” to 34680.

Daniel

Daniel Büys sang the Queen classic “Somebody To Love”. “I think you’re unjustly underrated, and that performance proves that you really can sing,” said Dave. “I’m not going to compare you with Freddie Mercury, I’m going to judge Daniel on Daniel, and that was a fair performance,” Mara allowed. “My boi!”

Gareth exclaimed, “that was a surprise. I didn’t think you were gonna pull it off.” Even Randall grudgingly admitted that Dan was “as good as he could be.” 086 22 777 09, or SMS “Daniel” to 34680.

Jody

Another Kelly Clarkson hit, this time from Jody Williams: “Behind These Hazel Eyes”. “That was the worst performance you’ve had,” Dave said succinctly. “You sounded like a real 16-year-old little girl,” Mara berated her. “I warned you last week about those bottom notes, but you didn’t listen, and your high notes were sharp.”

Gareth wanted to give her the benefit of the doubt, though. “No, Jody, I don’t think it’s your fault. I don’t know what to say to you, but it wasn’t you.” Randall agreed. “I’m going to reserve my comments and agree with Gareth,” he said.

086 22 777 11, or SMS “Jody” to 34680.

Munro

Munro du Toit’s rock song was “The One I Love”, by REM. “I’m pleased with you, well done,” said Dave. “Hey, my boikie - you were right on the mark,” Mara praised.

“Thank you, Munro. I haven’t been enjoying the show much, but you’ve given me something to smile about,” said Gareth. “Your look has certainly improved dramatically since last week, but I’d rather not comment on your singing,” Randall hedged. “It was a nice performance - entertaining - but the singing just wasn’t very good,” he explained when Colin pressed him for clarification.

086 22 777 12, or SMS “Munro” to 34680.

Carla

Carla Louw took a stage dive during her performance of Janis Joplin’s “Piece Of My Heart”. “I think of you in similar terms as Daniel in that you’re quite underrated,” Dave noted. “Last week, of course, your performance was brilliant, but this week, not that good.” Mara agreed.

“You didn’t do anything for me tonight.” Gareth again insisted that “there’s something about the sound that’s bugging me tonight. Apart from that, though, I’m afraid it’s either you or Yolanda tonight.” Randall thought it was “a nice performance trying to mask some very average singing.”

086 22 777 13, or SMS “Carla” to 34680.

Andriëtte

Andriëtte Norman closed the show with the Anastacia hit, “I’m Outta Love”. “To be fair, under the circumstances you did as well as you could have,” said Dave. “You’re in absolutely no danger of leaving.” Mara expressed reservations about the quality of the sound in the Arena. “As a singer I really feel for you guys tonight,” she said.

“I think you are an excellent singer,” Gareth soothed, and “the thing that’s really wonderful about you is that you really get into the song,” Randall agreed.

086 22 777 06, or SMS “Andriëtte” to 34680.
