Synopsis

Meet Sam. A spy. A hunter. And herself hunted by an enemy more ruthless and determined than any she's ever known.

Sam has been running from her past her entire life but when she returns to Byzantium, the organisation that employs her, and begins to pursue her pursuer, she will discover the only way to escape that past... is to confront it.

This is the story of a spy with a bull's eye on her back, a human target unable to trust anyone at any time, even the man she loves. She is, quite literally, running for her life.

At the heart of the drama is Sam played by Melissa George (The Slap, In Treatment), a highly skilled operative for an elite private intelligence firm who survives an attempt on her life that may have been orchestrated by members of her own team.

Once she returns to the firm, she performs her secretive duties without knowing who to trust and who wants her dead.

Adam Rayner (Hawthorne, Mistresses) plays Sam's colleague at the firm and love interest. The dedicated and complex members of the firm operate in the shadows, must often confront life and death situations on secret missions and are sometimes unaware of who or what they are fighting for.

Other cast members include Stephen Dillane (Game of Thrones, John Adams), Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Lost, Strike Back), Morven Christie (The Sinking of the Laconia), Lex Shrapnel (Captain America: The First Avenger), Patrick Malahide (Five Days, Billy Elliot), Stephen Campbell Moore (The Bank Job History Boys) and Oscar Kennedy (Toast).

In the first episode, Sam Hunter, an operative for the elite private intelligence and security firm Byzantium, is finishing a mission in Tangier when an attempt on her life leaves her critically injured.

Not knowing who tried to kill her, she disappears to a remote location to recover, regroup and retrain.

Returning to work unannounced nearly a year later, Sam surprises her co-workers, who are suspicious about her disappearance, especially Aidan Marsh, her secret lover.

Her bosses, Rupert Keel and Deacon Crane, retain doubts about her, but need their best agent for an important new assignment.

The team devises a plan to have Sam infiltrate a family headed by powerful millionaire Jack Turner, a man with a criminal past whose ambitions are at odds with Byzantium's secret client.

SJ Clarkson directed the first two episodes; Frank Spotnitz, Alison Jackson, Jane Featherstone, Stephen Garrett, Christopher Aird executive produce.

The series is produced by Kudos Film & Television (MI-5 Life on Mars), in association with Big Light Productions for Cinemax and the BBC.
