About the Show

Shetland is a British murder-mystery crime drama television series following Detective Jimmy Perez, a native Shetlander who has returned home after a long spell away and leads a murder investigation, uncovering secrets and lies from the past.

In the first two episodes of the series, "Red Bones": When a young archaeologist discovers a set of human remains, the island community is intrigued to know if it's an ancient find or a contemporary mystery.

And when an elderly woman is shot dead on her land in mysterious circumstances, Perez and his team find themselves at the centre of two feuding families whose envy, greed and bitterness has divided the surrounding community.

Season 2 begins with Raven Black, in which a local recluse looks like the obvious suspect in the murder of a teenage girl, until another corpse and a secret hiding place reveal new clues.

A journalist's fatal car accident seems suspicious in Dead Water after Perez discovers the driver was researching plans for a controversial new gas pipeline.

And in Blue Lightning, Perez flies to nearby Fair Isle to investigate a scientist's death, just before incoming storms ground all flights. Can Perez solve the crime without a forensic team, and before the prime suspect slips away?

Season 3 centres on the disappearance of a young man on a ferry crossing from Aberdeen to Lerwick. Suspecting foul play, DI Perez and his team begin an investigation which has far-reaching consequences for them all and the local community.

Based on the book Red Bones by award-winning crime writer Ann Cleeves, Shetland is written by David Kane (The Field Of Blood, Taggart, Foyle's War), produced by Sue de Beauvoir (Merlin, Waterloo Road) and directed by Peter Hoar (Vera, Silk, Five Days).

Shetland is an ITV Studios production for BBC One through BBC Scotland.
