About the Show

True Blood is an American supernatural horror drama television series created and produced by Alan Ball and based on the Sookie Stackhouse series of novels by Charlaine Harris, which details the co-existence of vampires and humans in Bon Temps, a fictional small Louisiana town.

The series centres on the adventures of Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin), a telepathic waitress with an otherworldly quality.

The series aired in the USA on HBO from 7 September, 2008 to 24 August, 2014. There are 80 hour-long episodes in seven seasons.

True Blood premiered in South Africa on M-Net on Tuesday 10 February 2009, at 21h30. It was moved to DStv's M-Net Action channel for the third season, to DStv's M-Net Series channel for Seasons 4 and 5 and to M-Net Series Showcase for the final two seasons. It also aired on TopTV's Top One channel and DStv's M-Net Series Zone channel (the final two seasons only).

About the Show

Mixing romance, suspense, mystery and humour, the series takes place in a world where vampires and humans co-exist, after vampires have come out of the coffin, thanks to the invention of mass-produced synthetic blood invented by a Japanese scientist that means they no longer need humans as a nutritional source.

The series follows waitress and part-faerie Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin), who can hear people's thoughts, and vampires Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer) and Eric Northman (Alexander Skarsgård).

Thanks to the invention of True Blood, vampires have progressed from legendary monsters to fellow citizens overnight. And while humans have been safely removed from the menu, many remain apprehensive about these creatures "coming out of the coffin."

Religious leaders and government officials around the world have chosen their sides, but in the small Louisiana town of Bon Temps, the jury is still out.

Local waitress Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin), however, knows how it feels to be an outcast. "Cursed" with the ability to listen in on people's thoughts, she's also open-minded about the integration of vampires — particularly when it comes to Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer), a handsome 173-year-old living up the road.

But as Sookie is drawn into a series of mysteries surrounding Bill's arrival in Bon Temps, that tolerance will be put to the test.

True Blood was created by Alan Ball; based on the Sookie Stackhouse novels by Charlaine Harris; executive producers, Alan Ball, Brian Buckner, Gregg Fienberg and Angela Robinson; co-executive producer, Howard Deutch; supervising producer, Kate Barnow; producers, David Auge and Bruce Dunn; co-producers, Christina Jokanovich, Ronald Cosmo Vecchiarelli and Sunday Stevens.

Special Notes

The first two seasons were simulcast on M-Net HD but not the third, although it was aired in HD on DStv on Demand. The fourth season simulcast on M-Net HD once again but Season 5 aired exclusively on M-Net Series, an SD channel. When the show moved to M-Net Series Showcase for Season 6, it was once again simulcast in HD.

Season 2

Season 2 premiered on M-Net on Tuesday 27 October 2009, at 22h00. After Episode 7 (8 December, 2009) the show went on a six-week hiatus to avoid the festive season. Season 2 resumed on M-Net with Episode 8 on Tuesday 19 January 2010, at 22h00.
