Survivor is an American version of the Survivor reality television game show based on the Swedish television series Expedition Robinson, originally created in 1992 by Charlie Parsons.
The show is based on stranding a group of strangers as one or more tribes in a remote location, where they must fend for food, water, fire, and shelter for themselves, while competing in challenges to earn rewards and immunity from being voted off by the tribe in progressive eliminations.
The last challenger remaining at the end of the competition wins the $1-million prize and title of Sole Survivor.
Survivor premiered in the USA on CBS on 31 May, 2000. Host/producer Jeff Probst has signed a contract to host the show until its 20th season.
Survivor premiered in South Africa on SABC3 on Tuesday 3 October 2000, at 19h00. See "Seasons" below for seasonal broadcast dates and times.
Synopsis
Survivor Palau featured twenty contestants competing for a million. A shock beginning saw two contestants leaving without even being placed in a tribe.
The two tribes were blue Ulong and brown Koror, with Koror dominating.
The final three were Tom Westman, Katie Gallagher and Ian Rosenberger. Ian quit in order to prove a point about his loyalty and friendship, leaving Tom and Katie as the final two.
Tom became sole survivor by a voting landslide of 6 to 1.

Ulong holds the record for the worst performing tribe in the show's history. The tribe lost every single Immunity Challenge - eight in total - and over half the Reward Challenges. It is also the first tribe not to merge with another - the last tribe member standing was absorbed into Koror.
Stephenie LaGrossa is the first Survivor player to have attended Tribal Council every single week in her season. The only Tribal Council in which she was not present, either as a participant or an already voted-out observer, was the one in which Willard was eliminated. She nevertheless attended a Tribal Council that same night.
Winner Tom Westman is one of many CBS reality show players to have appeared on a soap opera. He appeared as a fireman on The Bold And The Beautiful for an episode. He was not the only contestant from the season to make his soapie debut. Jeff Wilson appeared on an episode of The Young And The Restless as a poolboy.
Lovebirds Gregg Carey and Jenn Lyon did not continue their relationship outside of the show. While they say they have remained friends, both moved on romantically. Jenn got together with The Amazing Race contestant, Brian Smith, and Gregg was linked with Grey's Anatomy star, Katherine Heigl.
Coby Archa, the sniping gay hairdresser, adopted a baby girl shortly after the season ended. In the reunion show, he claimed that the show had made him reassess his priorities and realise that he could be a single parent if he so wished. He named the baby Janu, after his tribemate and friend, Janu Tornell. |
