The Phenomenal Criselda Kananda

Written by Cande from the blog This That There Then... on 08 Sep 2008

Metro Fm website  describes her as a mother, dynamic woman, professional, Inspirational Speaker, Professional Counselor and i have one word to describe her Phenomenal..

Motswako

and that is who Motswako had on tonight's episode...

Wow, is all i can say after hearing what this woman

has gone thru in her life and she still maintains that positive attitude towards life..

I cannot believe all this time i have been soo much ignorant and focusing/celebrating "schelbs" that i couldn't even write home about..

I cannot believe all this time i have been following lives of famous people who not making much difference to our society but instead being bad role models to youngsters admiring them..

I cannot believe i have never even once bothered to read about such an extraordinary, strong and beatiful woman...

Now here my summarised version of the story of Criselda Kananda's life...

She grew up in the township of Daveyton, with her father & her step mother and at the age of 5 realised that she wanted to be a talkshow host..
at the age of 8 she left home to look for her real mother(not because her step mother was a bad person) because she thought her real mother would do better...
Even though she didn't know where Mpumalanga/Witbank was she left home with hope to find her mother..she tells us she walked for 340 KM and there was a point where she had to cross a river using a scrap car's door because she had seen people using boats to cross rivers on TV. somewhere along the way she meets a guy whose truck was broken and he took her to his home after learning about her determination to find her mother.. This guy's wife bathed her and they bought her a train ticket to continue her journey but instead she got lost and got off a few stations after she was suppose to...She tells us how she lived in the streets for 2 weeks, slept under the bridges, in cardboxes n used plastic bags to make herself feel warm..
Eventually her determination paid off, and she got her mother..who then took her to her grandparents to stay with them..
Now, i dont know what happens but they get divorced and after matric she meets a man who "emotionally blackmails" her and tells her his father is about to die and he needs to give him a gift of a grandchild before he dies..
She agrees to this, but provided he marries her..mind you she is 20 and this guy is 35 years old at the time..
They get married and concieved a child by the name of Thato, and when she decided she wanted to study her then husband decides to marry someone else since he couldn't have a wife who was studying...She then walked out of the marriage, leaving her child behind.. She then goes to Wits for a month, and then goes teaching for 3 months and leave them due to financial constraints..until she went nursing and found her second husband on her final year at the age of 24..They get married, have a baby and when the baby was 7 month old the father got shot and killed..this is the man she referred to as "someone who completed her"..
As if that was not enough, after 1 year & 6 months of go roula(help with an english term) the family decides her ex-husband's brother needs to marry her which was something she disagreed to and then had to leave her second child behind which fortunately she gets re-united with after 2-3 years after she talked to her late husband's family..

I am not sure if its 9(because her youngest child is 9) or 10 years ago she gets a new man, and they decide to have a child.. She finds out during her pregnancy period that she is HIV positive hence we see her on talk shows, hears her on radio and read about the great work she is doing for the people infected/affected by HIV/AIDS and the society as a whole..

She was later re-united with her eldest daughter Thato, who called-in on her talk show she had on Kaya FM..

Wow, now this is a type of woman who makes me believe that nothing is impossible with God and determination,  she makes me believe that the Lord will never give you a test you can handle, she makes me believe that what doesnt kill you make me stronger...

WOW

You can listen to her live on metro every Wednesday and Thursday evening 19:00 to 21:00 or visit her website www.positivetalk.co.za..

Mmmmmmh such a strong woman indeed, never heard about her past except that she's infected.

But , it's hard to believe the part of an 8 year old, eqe amaqguma nemifula in a mission to find a parent, i must emphasise on that, she is a toughie, if it was me I was going to wait untill I reach 15.

I never give myself time to listen to her, I remember one day from work, she was on the radio, can;t remember the channel, but I changed and put on my CD. I am going to listen from now on.

Wow Cande gal! You took me by surprised i must say. Nice recap. Sad story indeed. I saw her on my tv-screen last night not knowing it was Criselda. I like her, she's a strong woman. She's been through alot, that made her strong and paid off!

Nice article Cande but unfortunately her story just doesn't touch me instead it leaves me with a lot of questions. I also hate that talk show of hers I find it unbearable. But ke all of that doesn't change the fact that she is a strong person and an achiever.

She is an inspiration i suppose but i still don't like her on the radio....sounds too arrogant and all-knowing for my liking.

I liked it when she said when you brush your teeth in the morning, look at yourself in the mirror and say "I AM BEATIFUL", and that is how you start thinking positive...
and i did that too this morning..LMAO
Wow i feel like i can do anything...

Now if i could meet her i wud ask her a few questions...

1.. How did she do it? 3 marriages by the age of 30
2..Where is her 3rd husband??
3..What keeps her looking sooo beatiful?

She's a strong woman indeed. I applaud her of coming out a winner inspite of everything she's been through. It just shows that people cant use their past as an excuse of not reaching and persuing their dreams. WE need more 'schlebs' like her who the children of this country can look up to as role models hayi lezihlanya zigcwal' isganga ngononsense..

1.. How did she do it? 3 marriages by the age of 30

1. She was 20 and her first husband was 35. She insisted on marrying him before she gave his father a grandchild.
2. At 24 she marries again to a man she met whilst doing her nursing degree and months later gives birth to her second born. He gets shot when the child is 7 months old.
3. After the whole drama with her second husband’s family she marries a man (third husband) who she knew before they even met he had emotional baggage and is introduced to him by a friend. The friend tells her the man had his heart broken and needs a nurturer.

All her marriages occurred months later after she met the men.

For me she is phenomenal for making it through the situations she found herself in, but how she ended up in the situations she was in leaves me cold and unaffected. and raises alot of questions in my head.

Nice article Cande but unfortunately her story just doesn't touch me instead it leaves me with a lot of questions. I also hate that talk show of hers I find it unbearable. . I feel the same way Golden Star...I also have lots of questions especialy w.r.t her child (Thato)she left behind. She managed to cross rivers at the age of eight to find her mom but she couldn't hop into her car to go find her child...maybe there are valid reasons behind this but I just don't buy the whole KK story.

sounds too arrogant and all-knowing for my liking. Tox, this is why I normally skip her column/page in Real magazine....the answers she gives sometimes, make my stomach turn....When I saw her on Motswako I changed the channel and read a book instead....

But ke all of that doesn't change the fact that she is a strong person and an achiever: Yes, she is indeed!

Great recap Cande!

I missed the first part.
i thought i had problems in life but what this PHENOMENAL WOMAN went through ke diteko. what amazed me is that i didnt see her crying.
some of her experiences that touched me;
- when she said the second husband completed her
- her daughter calls her
- she is told she cant take her baby because she has no car, no house, no money
- her husband is shot and no one helps him because they dont know him
- she tests positive and the doctor tells her she is going to die
Miss Cande thanks for the update - she is AN INSPIRATION, I got no words to describe her.
the presenter for metswako her make up - that was extremely too much.

For me she is phenomenal for making it through the situations she found herself in, but how she ended up in the situations she was in leaves me cold and unaffected. and raises alot of questions in my head.

But i feel gore her like every other human being out there, she made wrong choices in life which she learnt from and which made her a strong woman she is today...
angithi sonke we made mistakes and take them as a learning curve and move forward from there??

I will like to listen to her though, and her this know-it-all & arrogancy you guys talk about..i dont want to lie i have never listened to her on radio..

I was first inspired by her when i saw her on Zam and Khensani's show (miss that show).  I also do not understand why she left her first child behind, did they reunite?

Cande
09 Sep 2008 02:26

...i am still enjoying her WOW factor, until then...

the presenter for metswako her make up - that was extremely too much.

this is what happens when old woman dont want to accept gore their skin is ageing, they put on a lot of make-up that make them look like a corpse in a coffin..

Blaze
09 Sep 2008 02:26

she goes around marrying every Tom, Dick and Harry and leaving children behind and that makes her a great person all because she is on tv, many ppl have bn through harder times having made lesser mistakes. its the truth!

however i do admire her ability to remain positive and live her life to the fullest.

ewe, the daughter called in when she was doing her talkshow on Khaya FM and told her "she is the Thato Criselda has been looking for"

I was sooo INSPIRED yesterday, i didnt know there was this bad side about her...infact, i am still inspired..

Ditto Cande, my gripe arises from what she has learnt from those situations and the soap box moments she has. From her utterances about HIV/AIDS, morality of the nursing profession, her moral high ground and proclaimed your highness status.

Your writing caught my attention.
But how does she inspire a 10 year old?
That she ran away from home, got married 2 times and once to a sugar daddy? And have 3 kids to diff daddies ( if not mistaken)? The HIV part I cant mention coz it was the unfortunate part..

after all the negative has been said about this woman, i still like Criselda and see her as inspiration in the sense that thou she's made bad decisions she's dusted herself off and went foward. She's human too - she can make mistakes, but its what she takes from her life lessons that makes her PHENOMINAL. No i havent listened to her radio show...

I am happy for her.  After so many mistakes that have left huge traces in her lfe, imagine having 3 kids with three baby daddies and left two. Sho she is brave. I'm not judging, if that were me I would have classified myself a failure and given up. But she rose.

I don't understand why she always put herself in such situations but she rose and blossomed.
