It's official. The tradition reality fans have come to know and enjoy so much has been broken and from the looks of it it's never coming back.
As you know each season of Survivor on SABC3 always gets followed by the next season of The Amazing Race but it's stopped happening with no explanations. Basically the situation is that there's a new show starting tonight called "The Magic Cape Race" and the only thing I know about it is that it's a seven episode local TAR-type set up that's sponsored by Toyota.
I know this because the only news I've heard about it was when it was uncertain whether it was actually going to be broadcast. Apparently there were problems with it having too much advertising in it and it wasn't certain if it was going to be aired - so you have an idea of the perspective it'll be coming from aka sell cars first; entertain last.
When the seven episodes end early next year there's no TAR either because the fourth season of The Apprentice US starts straight afterwards - two and half years after it was yesterdays news in the US. The reason it's been changed from a Thursday to Tuesday: Thursday night's local content night when we're forced to suffer through "comedies" like Font.
I was having a debate with someone just last week who's in a local comedy and he was saying he believes the press doesn't want local shows to do well because they're always slating his show and I was stumped that that's what he thought.
The last thing in the world any TV writer wants is for a local show not to work - it sucks - not only because of how fun it is when a show's cool but you often get bullied by being called unpatriotic when you say what you really think - which is the furthest thing from the truth.
The point of that comedy rant: all of the above is why we're getting The Apprentice on Tuesdays instead of Thursdays.
While I was investigating what's going on I heard a rumour that SABC3's looking into getting the rights for our own Amazing Race - which would be superb if it's true. The only trouble is I don't have hope it'll ever happen - if we don't even know what's starting after Survivor - which is the channel's sixth most popular show - we could have our own Amazing Race and no-one would know about it.
If you're a TAR fan I'm sorry to have brought you this news - I SO prefer spilling exciting things.
As for the stupid Magic Cape Race - it has to be seen to see what it's about I suppose.
PS: None of this even touches on how far behind we'll be if TAR eventually does come back.
