There's a massive crisis on the South African music scene. There are too few women who are getting to the top of the scene and something dramatic needs to change.
Pronto!!I noticed the extent of the problem last year at the
Channel O Awards where the only category that had a strong womanly presence was the Most Gifted Female Video category which
had to be won by a woman obviously. But that was it.
Every other category was dominated by men which meant that men dominated the awards completely. The Soil and Mafikizolo each won an award each but, as you know, they're mixed gender groups.
Now, the situation's having an impact on TV shows too. A mole who's working with Clash of the Choirs has just told me that the production's been struggling to find women choirmasters for the new season.
Auditions for Season 2 start in Jozi next week and the show's still trying to tie down chikita choirmasters.
Judith Sephuma, Winnie Khumalo and Thembi Seete were choirmasters on the first season but the second season needs new choirmasters and finding them has been very difficult apparently.
Think about the women musos you know ... who'd be perfect for the gig?
