Have You Seen Anything As CRAZY?

How's this - after months of firing's, hirings, parliamentary meetings and other farcical dealings a new SABC board has finally been chosen and stars .. wait for it ...

Politicians, lawyers, consultants (what do they actually do??), doctors (too unbelievable but true), a former board member (I know, it's too much), engineers, economists, unionists and two journalists (obviously to make it seem that there are one or two among them who at least try to make things interesting.)

And that's it!!!!!!!! No-one - not one single person - who's speciality job description lies in broadcasting or entertainment (or fun!) or arts and culture; or any such vaguely associated thing. It makes so little sense and it's so eye-stabbingly boring it's like being sucked straight into the twilight zone!!!! I'm too stumped to say anymore.

The list:

Anthony Mello (Engineer)
Ben Ngubane (Medical doctor)
Barbara Masekela (Former board member)
Cedric Gina (Unionist)
Clifford Motsepe (Lawyer; ANC youth league rep.)
Clare Frances O’Neil (Consultant)
David Niddrie (Journalist)(media specialist)
Desmond Golding (Economist)
Felleng Sekha (IT law)
Peter John Harris (Law advisor)
Pippa Green (Journalist) (involved in TV news)
Suzanne Vos (Politician)

What does the SABC board actually do?  If they're more overall management and don't have much to do with the actual TV and radio content then maybe it doesn't matter so much that none of them has any real entertainment/cultural background, provided that the people in the necessary positions do.

ANC POLITICISES SELECTION OF SABC BOARD, SAY OPPOSITION PARTIES

An opportunity to unite across party political lines in the selection of a new SABC Board was derailed this afternoon when the ANC reneged on an undertaking to make the Board appointment process more inclusive than the previous, highly contentious one.

Whereas the opposition requested inclusivity and the assurance that the opposition members of the committee would not merely be used to legitimize their selection process, it is now clear that the ANC all along intended to use Parliament as a rubber stamp for its pre-selected Board.

Following the interview process the DA, Cope and the ID together selected a total of 12 names, 7 of which coincidentally corresponded with those put forward by the ANC.

These, we believed, were candidates who had shown that they had the skills and integrity to turn the SABC around.

We attempted for two days to engage with the ANC to seek consensus on the remaining 5 names.

But today the ANC members of the committee instead confronted us with the very same list they had offered right at the start of the process.

They have simply refused to consider amongst the last 5 names any names put forward by the opposition.

The reason advanced by the ANC for why the remaining 5 names could not be changed was that they were nominated by the SACP, ANC Youth League and Cosatu.

With the help of the IFP, the ANC has managed to push through a Board that is loaded with ANC Alliance nominees, and it is now increasingly clear that a faction within the IFP has thrown its lot in with ANC.
