Sneak Peak: DStv's 5 New Channels
animax 3

On Wednesday night I hotfooted it to a shindig held at Constitition Hill in Jozi for the launch of DStv's five new channels starting this week: Animax, Sony Entertainment, Gospel One, M-Net Stars and The Style Network.

Basically the set-up involved a sneak peak of the channels and then a party afterwards to hook up with the bigwigs from each of the channels to find out more info and ask questions etc.

ANIMAX

The peak started with a preview of Animax that unexpectedly blew my hair back. They showed clips of the shows coming up and the artwork, music, anime characters and storylines the promo hinted at tripped me out in a big way.

Watching seemed to make the world shift two hundred years into a techno-fab future and I ended up with the same feeling I have each time I watch the anime scene in Tarantino's Kill Bill (about 50 times so far.)

The words "love" and "pain" flashed across each scene and strangely described the images perfectly. It's bizarre - I couldn't quite put my finger on what the animations made me feel - it's like by not being real the scenes have an emotional zing that take you through a gazillion thoughts and wowser moments at the same time - in much the same way you feel when you watch sci-fi.

All in all I was very impressed and surprised - when they first announced the channel I didn't think I'd be so interested in it but it's freshness, unique feeling and promise of epic stories make it top of my newbie list. The channel premieres tomorrow night (3 November) on Channel 111.

SET

In contrast Sony Entertainment TV's such a disappointment. Out of the five channels I thought the mix of series and movies on it would make it my fave but from the looks of the line-up it's gonna end up being a last-resort channel instead. The opening schedule suggests it's a rehash of mediocre shows we've already seen with the Charlie's Angels movies on a million times.

I was anticipating it would have all sorts of new Sony shows with a couple of older ones in between but unfortunately there are only about two shows listed that we haven't seen. The schedule's cluttered with re-runs of things like The Shield, The Guardian and Party Of Five.

Apparently the channel's not a "premium" channel so it's focus isn't on new programming but rather rebroadcasts. What's so non-sensical is that it could be so much more even if it's not premium. Instead of putting together a bunch of has-beens they could rather have included classic retro-cool shows. If they had things like the original Charlie's Angels and Sony's classic sitcoms (eg. The Jeffersons, Facts Of Life) it would a different story but instead it's just dated. It premieres on Channel 108 tonight.

GOSPEL ONE, M-NET STARS, THE STYLE NETWORK

As for the other three channels: good news for Sis Rebs fans - she's gonna be all over Gospel One, ha! I didn't realise that the channel's fully local - it's been put together by SA production company Urban Brew who've filmed religious programming - with lots of music - from all over Africa. It premieres on Sunday on Channel 331.

The compilation re-run movies on M-Net Stars (which launched last night on Channel 154) don't look promising unfortunately. My first impression on looking at their boring line-up is that they simply put the channel together to launch five channels. For instance this weekend they've got Outrageous Fortune and Hocus Pocus on three times as part of their premiere line-up. WTF?

Style Network on the other hand looks as if it's defs gonna be fun. It's goss -filled, ideal for tittivating junkies and won't be a repeat of E! I chatted to the bigwig from it (a stylish short type with a long-fringed hairdo) and he guarenteed that things on E! won't be repeated on the Network so we thankfully won't have to suffer through Dr 902-SCUM-O chopping up both channels. It premieres on Monday ( 5 November) on Channel 183.

You'll be able to catch info on the highlights for each channel as from next week on TVSA.

PS: I took a couple of pics at the shindig and popped them here.

PPS: I want to be an anime character.

Of these new channels Animax will do for me and thereafter Trace. That is if Trace is not going to be like channel O and MTVB showing their irritating adverts all the time.
