On Tuesday (11 August) I hotfooted through to the SA's Got Talent auditions in Cape Town to snoop what was going on - it was the last day of auditions that travelled through Jozi and Durbs first.

I sat in on the morning's auditions that ran from about 9h30 to 13h30 and spent loads of time guffawing.

I'm sure you've been wondering the same - curious to see what sorts of lunatics acts entered. The filming went down in front of a live audience at the Cape Town Convention Centre auditorium ...

capetown_auditions_1
The audience waiting to go in, all on 'sick leave' from work.

capetwn_auditions_judges1
Judges Ian, Shado and Randall, in their places before the action started. They were wheeled in in jersey's and were then undressed before the show. Note how Ian isn't looking at the stage at all - he was much more concerned with a whack sticker under his horror shoes throughout - see pic coming up.

First up was a 6-year old Ringo Starr who goes by the name of Daniel Pieterson. He played drums while his dad played the keyboard - I snapped him solo 'cos he was much better than his dad.

Judges Verdict (for the next stage*): YES

capetown_auditions_5
Next up was Johan Stemmet's lurve-child Franz Britz, who played the accordion and then sang Elvis Costello verry badly.  Thankfully the judges ditched his singing - he got through on his Noot Vir Noot playing.

capetownauditions_anele_rob
Presenters Rob and Anele were in the thick of the action, touching each other a lot and dealing with hopefuls between their auditions.

capetownauditions_6
A soccer World Cup magic act involving flying soccer balls and body-chopping. In the group: Siphiwe Fangase and Nkumbiso Nkonyana - Nkumbiso also entered with a gospel group called The Heavenly Quartez. Their singing wasn't overly heavenly so they didn't make it through but the socagic act did.

Siphiwe didn't utter a word through any of it - not the intro's nor the magic .

sagtcapetown_7
A comedian/enne by the name of Jody Kleinhans. An  improv. dude/chick who's face no-one managed to see 'cos of a hat with tufts that covered his/her face completely.

He/she also delivered the best contestant line of the morning, calling Randall "Idols" - said something along the lines of "Yes Idols I see..."

Judges verdict: YES.

Anele and Rob behind the scenes, scrutinising Jody.

sagt_capetown_9
Singer Byran McKeth who had swing-hip action going on. Turns out he's a celeb in Cape Town - when he came on there were lots of mutterings from the audience "Oh, he's good. Seen him performing before twitter twitter."

Judges verdict: YES.

sagt_capetown_10

Croc-wearing, didgeridoo-playing, Moses looklalike Mike Davies. The Didgi's handmade apparently - he played a tune but you couldn't tell what it was - it just sort of went on. Still there was something about it that was quite trippy.

Judges verdict: YES.

sagt_capetown_11
The tearjerker of the day: Mary-Anne Solomons who sang "You Raise Me Up." 20-years old, she spent four years on the street, while trying to raise her siblings. Her singing needed work unfort. so she didn't get through and was mega-disappointed.

SAGT_CAPETOWN_12
Our own Paul Potts potential (surprise Pavarotti-type winner of Britain's Got Talent 1). Deon Botha. He sang one of those Italian type opera arias and sounded as such a singer should. All of his older brothers were in the Drakensberg choir and he said he's always wanted to sing too ( lots of sibling issues natch)

What's Shado up to under the table?

SAGT_CAPETOWN_16
The answer. Cadbury's is a sponsor of the show and all the judges get a snack pack that they put under their judge table, which Shado reached for as soon as there was a free moment.

SAGT_CAPETOWN_14
Ian's horror square-shoes : he kept trying to convince people that he hadn't chosen to wear them.
SAGT_CAPETOWN_17

The winner of the Award for making the judges' buzzers go beserko the quickest: Justin Ridge. He sang a song called "I'm Yours," and the audience was like "No thanks it's okay BYE."

SAGT_CAPETOWN_21

A pop-rocker Wynand who .. get this, wants to study transport and sang an Afrikaans song called Passop Die Lorrie, ha! (Watch out for the Lorry).

Audience and judge response: the chicks were finished for him. My verdict: he needs to do something about his hair - like give it a wash!

SAGT_CAPETOWN_19

Aha! A surprise to everyone. Baron. 50. A teacher. Poet. In oversized clothes. He delivered the most dramatic performance out of everyone. An Afrikaans poem that he wrote and spoke in a way that went beyond the words.

The judges verdict: YES.

*What happens now? The show premieres on SABC2 on Thursday 1 October. Between then and now the judges will be going through all the auditions to choose a final 21 acts - the acts that will be voted for by viewers.

The show will start with all the auditions round the country and when it gets to the 21 finalists the audience voting line aspect of the show begins.

All the semi-final live shows will be on in November -  leading up to the finale on Thursday, 12 November. The live semi-finals will be on Monday to Wednesday (9 - 11 November) and the Finale will be on Thursday.
