M-Net reallocates The Wild’s funding

M-Net has decided not to commission a third season of The Wild, which means the soap will come to an end on the M-Net channel in March 2013.

"This difficult decision was made based on two interrelated factors," says Theo Erasmus, M-Net Director: General Entertainment Channels. "Firstly, M-Net ascertained that the monies allocated to The Wild, which is a high-cost production due to the fact that it's a location-based soap, could be spent on other productions that could possibly produce better ratings in a shorter period of time. Soaps take many months to build an audience, whilst other genres may produce higher ratings quicker.

"The ratings of The Wild have been growing steadily month on month, but not in line with the vast investment. Secondly, the original land bought for the production of The Wild faced ongoing rezoning challenges which could still take many years to resolve. This left the production with no real 'home'."

Since its launch, The Wild has been showered with industry accolades, including four SAFTA awards. Recently, it also received the You Spectacular Award for Most Popular Soap, with actors Ty Keogh and Shona Ferguson also nabbing the awards for Sexiest Male and Best Actor respectively. It even received international recognition with a Rockie Award nomination in a category previously won by soaps such as Days of our Lives.

Erasmus says that M-Net is very proud of The Wild's achievements: "The Wild has set new standards for soap production in the country. Therefore, the M-Net channels are working on plans to create spin-offs from The Wild in a more settled, urban environment. You will find out more about this and other exciting M-Net plans in due course."

OMH, Connie will have to go back to Gen again. I hope not. I'm not sure about her in dramatic roles though.

They shouldn't cancel the show. The producers should just be patient. Look at Isidingo - it suffered for a long time but it's now doing very well.

It all starts with stories as beautiful as it looked their stories sucked and that's a fact

They could have just had few "starrings" That soapie has too many "starrings" - Dear MNet Next time, just go the Vusi Thwala way. Low budget. 1 starring. It might be sustainable. Or better yet, turn this into a telenovela. Regards Blue

But MNet was too ambitious neh. That show looks really expensive. I always thought they'd realise how it never made sense to shoot a soap on location and move it into studio instead. I must say I never saw a cancellation on the horizon. I was even starting to warm up to some storylines.

It all starts with story. I agree with Gqimgqim - it can look as expensive as you want if stories don't connect with your audience they just don't. Everything starts with story... And a good storyteller can tell a story holding a leaf and capture it's audience, throwing money into a dry story pot is not going to create miracles. That's what happened here. Yes, it looked good, like really good but you get tired of how good it looks after two episodes and you want something that captures your emotions, your heart, that will make you talk - and that's story, which they didn't have

I never got to watch it but it actually saddened me coz no work no income but if the actors haven't saved they must start saving those thousands right now.

I totally disagree with Gqimgqim and 05415 the show's storyline is quiet good. It has its specific target market and it was reaching it, not at the pace that Mnet wanted it too but it was gradually increasing. Remember people are not going to like every show that airs on tv. A storyline in a show might not appeal to you but it might to 10 other people. Every soap created in the country is for a specific target market.
Mnet is not going to let go of such a talented cast the majority of them will be kept of the spin off they are major drawing cards for viewers and sponsors.

The way I see it unfolding and the future of the cast:

The land exploration will go through and Itumeleng, Karel and Lelo will win the battle over Maxine. Which will mean that the lodge, Van Reenan farm, game park and surroundings will be sold. Itumeleng will buy a 5 star hotel in Johannesburg with some of his share and move the majority of his staff so they wont lose their jobs, which means Dixie, Bernie, Mama Rose, Zinhle and Ashwin will make the move. Jack and Angie will also find themselves working for the hotel as well.
Marang and Itumeleng will live in the penthouse of the hotel. She will run the hotel as expected.
Maxine's fight with Itumeleng will increase as it gets more personal when he realises they have a son together.
Before leaving Lelo and Tristan fall in love and when they also move to Johannesburg Lelo finally starts up her magazine she always wanted. Tristan will be closer to his daughter and a love triangle will begin between Lelo, Tristan and Kate. Tristan will be a nature conservation consultant.
Modise will be bitten by the advertising bug again and try and compete with his "friends" that bought him out of his company.
It will be more sexy, edgier and entertaining.
Karel, Lebata and Sarah will be written off.

I like what you think M-Net can do with The Wild in a more Urban setting Justin. I however am very disappointed M-Net is letting go of the best cast any show could ask for! Well I must add my comment here, M-Net really changed the South African landscape for locally produced Television with The Wild. Especially in the soapie arena. A soap that was filmed in HD, on location with the world class top South African cast and on an amazing production - canceling or not renewing the soap took M-Net back 5 years. Congratulations on bringing innovation to our television landscape only to take it back. You will never be able to repeat the success, recognized by The Wild again. I am deeply disappointed for the world-class Cast and Crew for the soap. AMAZING work to all on the soap!

World class or no world class their stories did not capture us to make the numbers,no one pours money to be watched byten people.whats the point. We r talking millions here that quality must go with good story and they failed lets be honest yes I feel bad for peopLe losing jobs but that's how the cookie crumbles in this industry even on Hollywood. You fail to bring inthe numbers - you're gone. Harsh but that's how it is E

All I say is this is  what happens when the show refuses to at least hire new story-liners who are eager to offer their services by offering fresh, original story lines and keep their experienced writing staff for the scripting.Because everything we saw on the wild was not different from what we already saw from other local soapies, yes the sets, decor, actors and production crew  were different but in terms of story it was a prerequisite of what has been done before.Yes many stories are somewhat familiar but it is great ideas that makes them different from the others.

One other thing, I think if The Wild was also shown on Mzansi Magic (not old episodes ike theyre doing). The same as Idols, theyd have a better chance of surviving. Its only a small nunber of people who actually watch / can afford MNET. Most people with DSTV are on compact, which excludes MNET. They would never have enough viewers if the show was limited to only a certain number of DSTV subscribers.

Its a pitty coz I was actually starting to enjoy it and the eye candy of a cast they have

@Justin, I agree with u, thee soap still could go on n thrive. If it doesn't grab u, it doesn't mean the rest of us don't enjoy it, I for 1 am a big faan n the news have saddened me a bit, will miss it cos I was looking forward to an interesting watch. Hope they replace it with something interesting so I don't miss it much

Ag no man andhere I was hoping to have it on Friday nights as well, my whole family actually dish up and eat so that we dont miss The Wild and Binneland...I am very very unhappy that its being cut, there are so many shouws out there that are realyu realy baaaaaddddd, not worth filming even and now one of our OWN South LAfrican shows are being taken away, this really is very saddening for me.
Cant they relocate to another setting smaller place maybe.  Please rethink before cancelling all together.
