What Do you know about SA music-(in memory of Lucky Dube)

What a sad and tragic loss...Lucky Dube made us proud when he won that Grammy years ago and the international community paid attention to us...We have lost one of our treasures, and the sad thing is today's youth is not clued up on who's the best in SA and Lucky Dube was embraced internationally but ignored by his own...I think we should encourage our youth to be more patriotic and to explore local talent more...(i remember the death of Tupac through gangsterism was made into a big deal locally...but I don’t even think half our youth will know who Lucky Dube is or even feel like finding out and celebrating his contribution to music like they did with Tupac yet we lost someone who put our countries name on the map reggae-wise in the music industry sad sad sad...

Anyways this made me think of a gazillion questions that I ask myself about Mzansians and their love for all things American to the risk of forgetting our very own

here’s a trivia to test your knowledge of SA music and to see what have you done for SA lately music wise to be proudly SA

Do you know any Afrikaans Artist?
Do you know any local rock group and lyrics to their song
Do you know any of Steve Hofmeyer’s song?
Do you know who Suthukazi arosi is -hi hi hi
Did you know Pabi Moloi’s father is Nana Coyote-Do you know him and what song of his you know of?
Did you know V-mash was a singer with gold-selling albums…if so give me one song by her… (that’s a tough one hi hi hi even for a seventies child like me

Are you aware that Zizi Congo owns the very same shebeen you go to sometimes? or you don’t know her
Can you sing along to Koos Kombuis…(he’s big in rock festivals
What happened to Vicky Simpson of African Dream or you don’t remember her
Are you aware of how talented Vusi Mahlasela is and how they love him overseas
Do you know if the Trompies guy is now a lawyer and is he actually practicing?
Same question for Steve Kekana…if you know him is he practicing law--
(
this is very important information people don’t take it for granted…LOL

Is there any shangan artist that you know of and can sing along to one of their songs
Is there any Basotho/Sotho artist especially from the ones they show on Roots/Ezodumo, that you are familiar with and can sing along to…
Can you “rhyme” along to any local-hip hop artist especially that Mazwai girl’s songs(I Hate Hip-Hop though)
Which other maskandi you know of besides Phuzekemisi and Shwi
What about Izingane zoMa -still remember any of their songs, “isdina sikamahlalela-LOL
Which other Scathamiya you know of besides Ladysmith Black Mambazo-can you even sing along to one of Ladysmiths songs
Which other mqgashiyo group -similar to Soul Brothers- you know of?

A very sad thing indeed i feel for his kids, their dad being shot rite in front of them. Mara ma Afrika what have we become? But what really bothers me kakhulu is the fact that i've never heard any of our radio stations playing any of his songs but now that he's gone each and every station is playing his song. Why is that? Why can't we honour our musicians whilst they are still alive, why do we have to wait until somebody dies then all of a sudden all great things are being said. A great loss for us Ma-Afrika and all those Raggae loving pips and deep condolences to hhis family.

I'm sorry to stray from the topic a bit or sound like an inconsiderate daughter of a b@#$h, but while i am greatly depressed by the news of Lucky's death, I am equally depressed by the comments I heard in todays news.

1. The police spokesperson said something to the effect of: "we have our best detectives on the case".

2. Ringo said something like: "they probably didnt realise it was Lucky, otherwise they would not have shot him".

My gripe is on the value placed on a person's life. Guys, is a death not tragic regardless of who dies. If it had been my brother last night, which detectives would have been assigned to the case, the worst ones? Because my brother is not famous?
And as for Ringo's statement,  maybe he was just distraught, or I am reading it wrong, but what I get from it is that it would have been better if it was someone else they had shot.

Guys, crime is bad in this country. But the value of a life can not be measured on a person's fame, and until the power's that be realise that, maybe they'll start paying attention to the trouble of the man on the street.

Once again, I do not mean to sound callous, but I just felt this had to be said.

And again, condolences to The Dube family, friends, and fans alike.

19 Oct 2007 03:28

Renegade you're right about ringo's statement..BUT my quesion is would they even have known him at all even if someone told them coz most criminals are very young and to them crime is crime whether its a star or not...and Lucky Dube hasnt been THAT visible locally...and of course everyone's life is worthy and we all have a contribute...I hope Ringo was just distraught   and didnt get his words right

as for the cops and their best detectives...thats what theya always say if they get a high-profile case

V.G. oint Rene!
If it had been my brother last night, which detectives would have been assigned to the case, the worst ones? Because my brother is not famous?

Spo:
sadly those r the only songs i know frm yena, they got more airplay, despite of ada songs he released which im sure r gr8, he IS world class

MXHO: the fact that i've never heard any of our radio stations playing any of his songs but now that he's gone each and every station is playing his song. Why is that? >>>when an artist dies they sell more records than when alive, true
TIP to Psyfo, "go hang urself and sell more!"

Some1 please correct me>>> I once heard that Lucky is originally from Zimbabwe together with Ray Phiri. I was a little bit surprised when I heard on the news that he was born here in JHB.

I also liked what DJ Sbu was talking about this morning .  He was saying that now that Lucky has passed away almost every station will be playing his songs.  Why didn't they play his songs while he was still alive?  It just goes to show that we only appreciate some1 when they are gone.

19 Oct 2007 03:51

Yhoooooooooooooo! The minister of Defence or something like that once said that if you cant stand the crime in this country, then leave SA. If it was possible we would make as many Titanics as we can and leave this country to the criminals! (no icebergs though). i still think that was a very careless statement from a minister.

Just a day before the RWC final, if these Boks cannot do it for anyone else not even Madiba (as i think this might be his last chance to see the Cup) then they must do it for Lucky Dube. You know Sponza you are so right, we do not appreciate our musicians. I'm listening to Metro fm, i have never heard anything by Lucky Dube on Metro, but today they played one of his songs because he passed away, now that is DISGUSTING and its an insult to SA music.

This is sooo SAD! We acknowledge these people when they die. Why cant we appreciate them while they're still with us? Why cant we support them now when they need us the most? When they die we rush to music stores to check out their albums for the record companies to be richer

Hawu guys...I know what you mean but really, how else are they supposed to pay tribute to him?? If they just mentioned it and moved on playing aboBeyonce, we'd also complain.
Maybe they didn't play his music because it didn't appeal to the majority of their listeners...How many of us here have ever bought  a Lucky Dube CD?

May his Soul Rest In Peace, he had a great career & his death is really sad. Both for his family, friends, fans & to the image of this country.

@spo…

Sorry for the long post

the knowledge about rock, I switched to 5fm abt 3months ago to explore, ive grown to like Gareths show in the morning (sometimes I listen to 702 mara they piss me off at times) + in the afternoon, im a hardcore Fresh fan from his unrestricted show on Y ( I thought his show rocked big time after phat joes live & dangerous, damn that was killa), so I decided to give Fresh a try on 5….. I must say I am hooked…. Eish I used to listen religiously to Y bt since the switch I must say I don’t miss it, only listen to Y to hear the gig guide on fridays sumtyms…. Sanza & rudi rock, no Chilli & Dineo nabo bayazama mara eish e Y bathetha kakhulu badlale umculo kancinci….. anyway my next stop is Highveld I hear Jeremy’s show with his side kick Darren Whackhead Simpson is good and im gonna give it a try nayo… u Bad Boy yena eish eish, I enjoyed his show when he was doin Harambe with Lee & Sanza now mst say I haven’t given him a try ku Retro……

About iFormula One and Rugby, two of my friends got me into these and ive been hooked since…..if you are heavily into cars bra, the stats, engine, performance, speed, power, you get to appreciate F1… it is not boring as people think and looks on TV, guys going around in circles, there’s more to it than that……..

Ive included some facts about F1 cars have a nice read….

a.. An F1 car is made up of 80,000 components, if it were assembled 99.9%
correctly, it would still start the race with 80 things wrong!
a.. Formula 1 cars have over a kilometre of cable, linked to about 100
sensors and actuators which monitor and control many parts of the car.
a.. An F1 car can go from 0 to 160 kph and back to 0 in 4 seconds.
a.. At 550kg a F1 car is less than half the weight of a Mini.
a.. In an F1 engine revving at 18000 rpm, the piston will travel up and
down 300 times a second.
a.. Maximum piston acceleration is approximately 7000G (humans pass out at
7-8G).
a.. Drivers haven't had to resort to pressure suits like fighter pilots
because they only experience high G's for very short periods of time.
a.. If a connecting rod let go of its piston at maximum engine speed, the
piston would have enough energy to travel vertically over 100 m.
a.. If a water hose were to blow off, the complete cooling system would
empty in just over a second.
a.. Gear cogs or ratios are used only for one race, and are replaced
regularly to prevent failure, as they are subjected to very high degrees of
stress.
a.. The fit in the cockpit is so tight that the steering wheel must be
removed for the driver to get in or out of the car. A small latch behind
the wheel releases it from the column. Levers or paddles for changing gear
are located on the back of the wheel. So no gearstick! The clutch levers
are also on the steering wheel, located below the gear paddles.
a.. To give you an idea of just how important aerodynamic design and added
downforce can be, small planes can take off at slower speeds than race cars
travel on the track.
a.. Without aerodynamic downforce, high-performance racing cars have
sufficient power to produce wheel spin and loss of control at 160 kph. They
usually race at over 300 kph.
a.. The amount of aerodynamic downforce produced by the front and rear
wings and the car underbody is amazing. Once the car is travelling over 160
kph, an F1 car can generate enough downforce to equal it's own weight. That
means it could actually hold itself to the ceiling of a tunnel and drive
upside down! In a street course race, the downforce provides enough suction
to lift manhole covers. Before the race all o
