On Special Assignment this Tuesday:

Episode Title: Rights Of Passage
Date: Tuesday, 22 April, 2008
Time: 21h30
Channel: SABC 3

On 22nd December 2007, 25-year old Buntu Majalaza went to be traditionally initiated into adulthood. Two weeks later the UCT graduate was dead from septicaemia - the result of a botched circumcision.

Buntu is one of the more recent casualties of an ancient ritual which, when practised without adequate hygiene, can have fatal consequences.

In the last ten years over 300 young men have reportedly died from complications after circumcision. Official statistics of mutilations and deaths expose only a fragment of the truth because initiation remains a rite shrouded in secrecy.

If this number of deaths had occurred among women, there would be an international outcry. But a deafening silence prevails over the mutilation and deaths of young men whose rite of passage into adulthood can become an agonising journey from which they do not return.

Now traditional leaders and government, particularly in the Eastern Cape, have taken steps to improve conditions for initiates. These include the mandatory registration of initiation schools, traditional surgeons and nurses, as well as legislation prohibiting circumcision on males under the age of 18.

Yet despite the decrease in mortality figures, deaths and injuries from illegal circumcision are still rife. For example, two weeks ago four deaths of initiates were reported in the Eastern Cape and six young initiates were rescued from an illegal circumcision in the Libode District, not far from Mthatha.

In the Western Cape , where there are no laws regulating this practise, initiation schools can be established as money-making, backyard operations where young men are butchered with impunity.

This controversial Special Assignment documentary, produced by journalist Hazel Friedman, investigates the situation.

I knew Buntu. His death was an absolute tragedy. At his funeral the story of what went wrong and how it could easily have been prevented made us so angry/sad. I'm out of the country, so didn't see the doc, but I hope there were some strong things said. Here's the thing: the ceremonies are now done in december holidays when they used to be done in the winter (from what I've read). So, now its that much hotter, so the chances of dehydration are greater and now the huts are made of plastic which get way hotter, further increasing it. The guys running these camps say they can't change tradition to make it safer, but they've already changed tradition and made it more dangerous. I can't see why they can't make basic medical training mandatory. The guy looking after Buntu didn't even understand that you could get blood infections. There was a message from the member of provincial government responsible for circumcision areas wishing all the initiates well before the season started, and silence when tragedy hit. I still get so angry about it all.

Well all i can say is that circumcision is a very is a very sensitive matter.

@ Batchick: The guy looking after Buntu didn't even understand that you could get blood infections.

Well my friend many moons ago people knew nothing about infections at all, leave alone blood infections, i just wish a solution can be found as soon as possible, broadcasting the situation is not going to change anything i think i might be wrong.

We arent even suppose to be discussing the initiation process, ayisifuni and thats that. in the olden days women werent involved kwezizinto and people reteurned from the Bush safe and sound, and now we are defying our culture and embarassing our ancestors, they are very angry at us, hence soo many deaths.

<<she is not typically gay, she's a lady and she's very informed, i was very impressed...........big ups to her.........>> She is not gay, but transgender. She is not attracted to the same sex but trapped in the wrong body. Gays tend to be eccentric but transgender people are more calm and behave in a very almost shy way - don't want to say "normal" so will say "conventional". AND she has had a sex change or sex re-assignment surgery which means she has a punani now, not a totolozi - she can have a male-female relationship, not male-male relationship.

I loved her explanation for the name "Lindiwe" and her birth name "Bhekisizwe". He was such a cute little boy, bantu! I kinda think she is going too far by suing Miss SA tho... if she wins that peagant, she can't compete in the Miss World or Miss Universe which have the rule that you have to be "female-born".

Oooh! that white shim was very interesting!

20 Aug 2008 03:21

I love Lindiwe too. Oh..my goodness you'd swear she was a female.Mhle shame umntwanabantu. I got confused tho when he talked about initiation - was she talking about female initiation seeing as she's already done the sex change. What happens to his pearly rings - the ony talked about how the penis is either inserted inside or they use a colon. Someone explain pls!

Segololo
20 Aug 2008 03:31

cma<<Transgender like the freak who got preggaz kulablog yakho.>> No, That one is lesbian. He hasn't gone thru with the removal of the genitals so is in a female-female relationshiop and is sexually attracted to females. BUT Lindiwe is not attracted to males but believes she was supposed to be female.

<<What's up with the ID and debit card story shim was talking about, akanazo? >> Her id still says Bhekisizwe and she is now Lindiwe so no bank or credit lender will open an account for a woman with a male ID number and name

<<what was so interesting nge white shim Sego?>> Now that shim is gay! S/he said she's not having the operation to change her gender but to enlarge his totolozi from xl to xxl. The way she explained the 5 legal d's that she has to live with, I LMAO! and then she wants loos for shims in every restuarant, resort, mall, airport, basically everywhere! That means there's now be 5 kinds of toilets; female, male, gay males, lesbians and family loos... LMAO!!

Segololo
20 Aug 2008 03:35

<<Oh..my goodness you'd swear she was a female.>> she is! she has changed her totolozi for a punani. so in biological terms, she is female.

I was also very wowed to see a female urologist! I have never even heard of a female one... Mostly males are brave enough to be gynae's but women shy away from that doctorate... SO that dr looks at totolozi's for a living! hands up to her!

Segololo
20 Aug 2008 03:38

cma<<yintoni icolon Zolx?>> did you run away from the biology class!? Ha ha a! My dear, the colon is the tube inside your body that digests food and is connected to the poophole.

my beef with the last one is > is it a boy born malish but looks femalish? what does she need a totolozi to be enlarged for if he wants to be a female but not to be transgendered or operated. Eish!

felfel
20 Aug 2008 03:54

Thanks for the clear up Sego.

He hasn't gone thru with the removal of the genitals so is in a female-female relationshiop and is sexually attracted to females. BUT Lindiwe is not attracted to males but believes she was supposed to be female.

She's now a female who's not attracted to males neh. That means she's attracted to females? So she's always been attracted to females, so before the op. she was a boy who had normal feelings towards gals...........mhmmm??????????

carino
20 Aug 2008 03:57

Nna the way i understood u Bhekisizwe, he hasnt done the operations yet, he's still doing research and looking at options... so he's not Ntombisizwe(sp) yet.

The options for the processes are either she takes some medications that will make the balls and the hard insides of the totolozi melt away then the totolozi will be surgically pushed inward backward, then that hole that will be left there will be her punapuna... But she said that is quicker but it can be unhealthy in the long run coz obviously that will be a lot of skin in one place... and infections are bound to hound...

so to eliminate the element of surprise, the other option would be to snip & paste..uSisi inoba uzafumana ipunani yomntu ofileyo angazi....

Or there's the colon option which nami, Zolx, andiyifumanisise kahle coz icolon mos, ihambisa amasimba so i'm not sure kahle kahle how they going to build a uterus and all that coz shim spoke about having periods...

carino
20 Aug 2008 03:58

She's now a female who's not attracted to males neh. That means she's attracted to females? So she's always been attracted to females, so before the op. she was a boy who had normal feelings towards gals...........mhmmm??????????

The plot thickens.... heeei  ///shaking my head////

She's now a female who's not attracted to males neh. That means she's attracted to females? So she's always been attracted to females, so before the op. she was a boy who had normal feelings towards gals...........mhmmm?????????? -  i'm confused. Does that make her a transgendered gay???

Segololo
20 Aug 2008 04:02

felfel - hahahah! i can see you are confused. Bheki was born a boy but beleived he was meant to be a girl. God made a mistake, in his opinion. He was not sexually attracted to females - it had nothing to do with sexual orientation. He wanted to be a girl, finish and klaar. So he went thru the whole process - getting boobs, getting hormones to make her features more feminine, living as a woman and then changing the totolozi to a punani to be a woman; now Lindiwe. Lindiwe now would be interested in males because she is a woman, so she is not gay.

cma - the last one was born male and is male; just behaves like a woman. he has a totolozi but prefers to dress up as a woman. so he has gone thru the getting the boobs, getting hormones part and living like a woman but is not taking away his totolozi.

Cnglemother

zolx uyabheda - whats a gransgendered gay?

felfel
20 Aug 2008 04:10

Sego okay this is what you said right????

No, That one is lesbian. He hasn't gone thru with the removal of the genitals so is in a female-female relationshiop and is sexually attracted to females. BUT Lindiwe is not attracted to males but believes she was supposed to be female.

I think you are ding dong Segololo.............. Lindiwe now would be interested in males because she is a woman, so she is not gay.

whats a gransgendered gay?- LOL..u know how we have to box everyone(thing) mos Cngleone

Lindiwe now would be interested in males because she is a woman, so she is not gay.  - this makes sense

Segololo
20 Aug 2008 04:18

felfel - yes, I said that  HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH! and the first part is not right... the second part is more accurate... Just read my blog on transgender, it may make more sense than here

andi01
20 Aug 2008 04:26

@Sego- yoo saying that he was born male, but she belives that she should be female, now he has changed to what he was supposed to be (female). And she is attracted to men, so she is straight, just that she was in the wrong body (or something). i hear you, loud and clear. She would be a lesbo if she (after the change was attraceted to women)

But ke if you look at it this way. God created Bhekisizwe as male, he didnt make mistake, the fact that amongst other things (female signs), he is attracted to men, he is gay

If he was still bhekisizwe he would be gay, but she is now Lindiwe therfore she is straight

carino
20 Aug 2008 04:32

Sego, now please explain the periods part.... coz i'm really confused joe...
And why will she be Ntobiyesizwe and Lindiwe at the same time...

Segololo
20 Aug 2008 04:33

yes, Andi! Thank you! O opile kgomo lenaka! (you are spot on!)

Segololo
20 Aug 2008 04:36

the menstrual part I couldn't understand either...

<<And why will she be Ntobiyesizwe and Lindiwe at the same time... >> Her first name is Lindiwe and the second name is Ntombiyesizwe. those are the names she will give herself

zolx
20 Aug 2008 04:51

And why will she be Ntobiyesizwe and Lindiwe at the same time... - i think Lindiwe is her stage name..LOLO. She changed from her real name Bhekisizwe cos she thought of it to be giving her to much responsibility (lack of a better word) of looking out for the nation to Ntombiyesizwe to be feminine and for the nation or with the nation instead of looking out for it (think this is the explanation she gave).

uLindiwe is a bit confused and confusing the audience in the process. She wants to have a cycle (which shouts woman) and still wants to go for initiation (done by mainly men in most cultures). ufuna both sides, ngeske wazenza iwhatwhat...aba kuthwa banezinto ezimbini (ikhona lonto khona?)

let baby
20 Aug 2008 04:53

so Lindiwe is a virgin????

zolx
20 Aug 2008 04:56

so Lindiwe is a virgin???? - dont think she covered this. Khona from which side are you asking from. His male or female side??? Does this make sense

Cnglemother
20 Aug 2008 05:04

the fact that amongst other things (female signs), he is attracted to men, he is gay - Andi01 she does not have male stuff anymore mos how can he be gay. She got female parts so she is straight now.
