First there was Hollywood, then Bollywood and Nollywood and now there's Vendawood.

The film industry in South Africa is struggling to establish itself as a serious business. There are difficulties in accessing funds and filmmakers find it hard to attract audiences.

According to the National Film and Video Foundation, only 8 to 10 films are produced each year, with an average budget of 9 million rand. Yet, at the box office they barely rake in one million rand.

But in South Africa’s northernmost province, behind the baobabs, Venda filmmakers are making movies guerilla style.

Special Assignment producers Godknows Nare and Johann Abrahams travelled to the hills of Venda to the world’s most unlikely film sets to see how it is done.

They meet filmmaker Khathutshelo Mamphodo, who lives in Lwamondo village near Thohoyandou. His comedies about ordinary life in a Venda village have become favourites around the country. The budgets are tiny, and the actors are friends and family members, but the results are astonishingly entertaining.

Khathutshelo’s first film, Tshovhilingana made in 2006, is a comedy which tells the story of an unemployed man with too many wives. Khathutshelo has since produced three follow-ups using the same characters.

Another filmmaker, Tshidino Ndou, is an IT consultant in Sandton, but every weekend he sets off for his home village Tshakhuma, to work on his latest film. All their films are made for the DVD market and they usually break even within the first month of release.

These filmmakers say that, although they are currently targeting a niche market, they hope to reach a wider audience because they are telling universal stories which everyone can relate to.

Is this the way to go for South African filmmakers?

Excuse my language but HELL NO!Nollywood is a laughing stock the worldover because of insulting production values.I'd rather see 8 SA movies per year than see 80 of these low budget farces. In this case, its quality over quantity.

You should get one of those movies and you are going to laugh off, but i will sugest that if you dont understand the language dont get Tshivhilingana 1 as it doesnt have subtitles but you can still laugh without understanding about how Mr Bundu act, he is such a funny character plus his daughter and 1st wife. I should check the special assignment tonight.

I somehow think so too Mjay,  i wud nt necessarily watch em until the 4th one, i wud just pretend it's a documentary.

Nollywood disturbs, i appreciate the work that goes into a production, Nollywood bad camera positions and angles frustrate the hell out of me, and that was a free viewing at a hair salon with nothing better to do...maara NOT Nollywood.

I'm sorry guys, Nollywood doesnt entertain me and I don't see why Vendawood would entertain me.
Maybe its becoz I dont know the language and the last thing I want is to be reading the subtitles umlibe becoz by the time I finish reading no matter how funny it is I would have missed the second joke.

Thats why I never watched Bollywood coz all they do is sing (at least everytime I happen to flip channels to them thats what they are doing)

I have watched Tshovhilingana...and think that Family Bonds is a spin off of these movies. Bongo sometimes reminds me of Bundu.

missed special assignment in any case.

Wake up and smell the coffee "Vendawood is here to stay!" and its films are spreading in Africa like an inferno. Eyespoke, little knowledge is dangerous & that is true. I am not a talkative person so i will be short - follow this link: www.bvumoproductions.co.za/multimedia  to watch/download some of their trailers. There is also a list of shops in that site but that's not all - you can find their titles on the shelves of big shops such as Jive City, Look and Listen, Releable, Jet Music, Discom & many many more throughout Mzansi and on the net. Try your neighbouring country for some signs

Last but not least buy Bvumo Productions Films on this online retailers -
http://www.kalahari.net/dvd/Tshovhilingana-2/18/32542790.aspx
http://next.rimco.co.za/set.py?series=local%20language%
That was just to break the ice, you can google tshovhilingana and you wont believe this guys have been makin them films with people turbo inspiring them big time. Check this link out -
http://www.businessday.co.za/Articles/TarkArticle.aspx?ID=2609518 and then we can talk the talk. This work is legendary lookin at where they started.

Vendawood slowly taking SA film industry by storm

After watching Special Assignment on SABC 3 on 28 April this year I concluded that the two Venda filmmakers, Tshidino Ndou of Tshakhuma and Khathutshelo Mamphodo of Lwamondo are taking SA film industry by storm with their guerrilla-style movies.

What is interesting is that they tell stories that reflect the realities of village life and have become favourites around the country.

The budgets are very low, and the actors are mostly family members and ordinary but talented people from around the villages who have never been on a film set or acted before.

However, there are difficulties in accessing funds and filmmakers find it hard to attract more audiences. In the show, the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) claims that only 8 to 10 films are produced each year, with an average budget of 9 million rand and that makes me wonder why Tshidino and Khathutshelo are not being funded.

I had an opportunity to watch two of Tshidino's movies, Mathaithai and Mphemphe and could not stop laughing.

It is worrying that self-proclaimed experts are not convinced about Vendawood claiming that Vendawood films are not good therefore cannot be screened in the Cinemas. What makes a good movie good? Almost everyone knows about locally made Madluphuthu and Moruti Wa Tsotsi comedies.

It is true that there are those who do things by the book but Tshidino and Khathutshelo are excelling against all odds to make films their people can easily relate to.

I would like to appeal to the NFVF not to rate and censor the Vendawood films. In the Special Assignment the NFVF claims that the filmmakers need to provide proper business plans to prove the sustainability of the industry. This is defying the purpose. Nollywood industry churns out approximately 1500 to 2000 video films per year - the beauty of Nollywood style films are that they are made by the people for the people. Controlling Vendawood and making it a cinema-oriented as opposed to DVD video oriented industry is the first nail in the coffin.

I predict that within 2 years Vendawood industry will blossom. Viva Vendawood Viva!
