Channel O's Horrific Music Awards!

Written by Brown Shuga from the blog SHUGAS BLOGIWOOD on 12 Oct 2007
Favourite this post

I am not joking, ask anyone who was there and they will tell you that Channel O's 2007 Music Video Awards were 2007's FLOP OF THE YEAR!
Not even DJ Sbu's fab outfits as a host could save the show, it was a disaster from start to finish!!!!

From the minute I drove in and saw familiar faces on a LONG queue,

to seeing that horrific "red carpet area" that was dirty, unsafe, ubuqaba obungaka Channel O? On your 10th birthday nogal???

co2
(that white board reads "VIP Registration, VIP my ass...)
co8

to when I joined the queue, got in and got told I should go back home coz I would not be allowed inside, it was full & I could only go in & stand with the "uninvited people who paid R60 & had to "stand" for the duration of the show...."

co1

to watching some celebs return home after being denied entry into the "full" VIP area,

to seeing all those people who were "invited" hustle for the VIP tags

co4

to insisting on getting a VIP tag and  being told by a fed up "what are those gals on the desk with the VIP list called?"
Yesses, take it, take it!!!

to going inside only to find that there was really no chair for me to sit on & seeing all those "standing" guests...

co5

to sitting on the floor watching a horrific show that looked like it was put together by a bunch of primary schoolkids,

co7

to seeing the Channel O VJ's faces that were written "embarassment" all over,

to watching Lungsta sit uncomfortably watching this drama, sweating as hell...

co10

to seeing all the guests looking bored, especially "Busi Dhlomo", (
gaad, what was she doing there?),

to seeing people walk out of the show ,
to seeing KB try liven up the show with his jokes without much success...

to seeing everybody use everything they could get their hands on to try and get air cos the air conditioning wasn't on...

co11

to the smile that reached my face when I saw DJ Sbu in a red belt & amazement that he actually looked great with that...

to seeing Bonang & Slikour's matched outfits go to waste....coz they left before they could even go inside....

to seeing all the NON SOUTH AFRICAN artists win ALL the awards...yet again, HHP was a bridesmaid, 5 nominations and NO AWARD!

co9

to the horror of seeing a NAMIBIAN artist win the BEST KWAITO award....

to the horror of seeing the BBA2 Untouchables....

The channel O Awards were a disaster...I don't have the words to explain it. I'm still too upset that I went. I stayed coz I wanted to see how it all ended...curiosity
I'm upset, will have more to say later...right now I'm upset!!!
This is a DOWNGRADE!! Last year's event was at Gallagher Estate & regardless of what I complained about then, those awards were 100 times better than the joke I saw last night. Nizintloni!

They watched the VMA's, tried to copy them without using their heads...I mean, that whole VIP's upstairs, crowd down next to the stage watching people accept awards on some stupid screen, why the hell would I pay money to go watch the awards on a screen when I can wait for the broadcast?

Someone needs to get fired for that mess!!!!!

@ Brown Shuga ... to the horror of seeing a NAMIBIAN artist win the BEST KWAITO award.... to the horror of seeing the BBA2 Untouchables.... Ouch, Brown Shuga! Wasn't there, but as a Namibian have to ask wot's wrong with a NAMIBIAN artist winning BEST KWAITO award? ??????? !!!!!!!! ?????? !!!!!!! ??????? We have a vibrant music scene here .... And :) would have thought seeing the BBA2 UNTOUCHABLES there would be a HIGHLIGHT .... :) :) :)

Starting to feel kinda hurt about being part of Brown Shuga's Namibian horror show ... but, hey, Gazza's BIG here ... and I woulda thought beyond our borders 2. We're a strong tribe, but a nation of only a few compared to u all ... so it must have been a popular vote from more than just us??? And waiting to hear if Gal Level won in their category ... Anyway, I head off to sleep knowing that we are sistas in upset at least!

oooh Meme J, I think you misunderstood me man. Namibian horror show?? That's taking things a bit too personal & I'm really sorry if I offended you but my comment  was NOT meant to belittle Namibia or Namibians....I love AFRICA way too much for all of that ish...
I have always thought and seen kwaito as a uniquely South African thing, we started the damn thing so it's a bit disappointing that someone could come and beat us at our own game. But then again Buttabee has reminded me that winners were voted for so there's my 'answer" right there.....

ONE LOVE AFRICA, ONE LOVE!!!!

Quote from article: "to the horror of seeing a NAMIBIAN artist win the BEST KWAITO award...."

Quote from Meme J: "Starting to feel kinda hurt about being part of Brown Shuga's Namibian horror show"

Meme, you feel kind of hurt... I am livid!  As a Namibian I HIGHLY OFFENDED by that remark.  Gazza is huge in Namibia.  Not only is he an exceptional artist, he is also the Goodwill Ambassador for Education in Namibia.  He performed at the opening of the park that my organisation built for the children in Namibia for a very low price.  During that time he also visited the children that my organisation is working with in prison - he gave them a free show.

We're a strong tribe, but a nation of only a few compared to u all ... so it must have been a popular vote from more than just us???
@Meme:  I agree with you...  we would not have been able to vote him into winning position.  Population: 1,8 million.  And the majority of Namibian do not have access to DSTV and are not able to watch Channel O.
THANK YOU TO THE REST OF AFRICA THAT VOTED FOR OUR GAZZA!

Kwaito in Namibia????????????hay'bo njani!!!!!!!

What do they know about KWAITO, i mean the NAMIBIANS. It is our thing finish and klaar

Gazza won - So obviously.....

Guys..why are you so quick to judge? Just because a non-south african called GAZZA won the Best Kwaito award ya'll out with ur hate-daggers! Have you even listened to his music or watched his videos? The guy is really talented and he is doing Kwaito irrespective of whether Kwaito is a South African genre. Finish & Klaar!!!
And by the way, the masses (voters) especially that watch Channel O (Gazza's video's receive massive airplay) made their voices heard!!

If you want to listen to some of his trax..halla @ moi.

Buenos dias amigos, to the horror of seeing a NAMIBIAN artist win the BEST KWAITO award.  i think the fact that a Namibian artist won the best kwaito award its a great thing thats ever happened to SA music. Finally our won creation is being recognised in other countries as well. Yes we created Kwaito and wanted to put it on the map, now thats its there we should be celebrating this is the first step. Lets look @ it this way, if it was the Grammy's or something (the US awards) and TUKS senganga won the best hip hop, we obviously would see that as a greta accomplishment, why cant we see this is just that.

Metro fm awards?Waiting.......hope not.Last year i didn't have any complains about the main function(metros)except for the food that sucked.so if they hire the same company again things should be smooth again and the fact that its their 21st celebration it should be bigger than last year....its SABC so money shouldn't be an issue.....

I won tickets to the awards, and was really looking forward to going. however decided against it, as i did not even know where the Joburg City Hall was, but after reading these comments, i am actually glad that i did not go, after waking up this morning riddled with regret!
it is a great pity that the awards were so badly put together! South African music is beatiful...it's sad that the awards intended to honour it were not.

@boogy-babe: Every1 has the right to their own opinion, and stating what they believe in ,thats y ppl dnt have 2lyk the same thing as the next person.-->

But then one should be careful how you express your “likings” and “opinions” especially on a forum like this. Because even if you don’t expect your opinion to come across as “offence”,… the next person can interpret it as offensive. After all, interpretations and perceptions differ from person to person…

andi01
12 Oct 2007 03:05

I beleive that, We as Africans have a tendency of pretending as if we are one and the same, we have each others back, but when compared to other countries we undermine one another. South African has always stolen dance moves from Namibia, Angola, etc (Dombolo) and none complain, but when a Namibian wins an award for music originated in South Africa some people say thats wrong. Secondly during the apartheid era, many SA soldiers were trained in Angola, Congo, Swaziland etc, they were fed by those countries economy, but when the wheel has turned and its our turn to help our fellow Africans we call them names, (i.e. amakwere kwere), which is absolute bolex. I think we as SA's need to be certain of where our loyalties are. if we didnt want a Namibian to win the award why nominate him. u-Abe (Lexie's husband in days of our lives) acted in that soapie for more than ten years, and he neva won an award. he came to SA and appeared on Generations for a couple of episodes, and he won an award. What does that say about the level of standards of SA. Why do we treat some people different from the way we treat others. i am a proud SA can and I think we ought to look @ our selves, where we come from and who has always been there for us. Adiois amigos. This is just my opinion amigos, no need to bite my head of ese.

Shugs: You have every right to be angry, I am also hrrified at the trauma of your experience... BUT O WRONGO SISI about the NAMIBIAN COMMENT ---Just because the supposedly King of Kwaito (Who TF) is in SA, it doesn't mean the music should not be taken up by other countries...

WSG/Meme J: I am on your side peeps...  I want to ask a question; just because Rock is largely a creation of black people should we now feel a bit livid if white people took it over? Same as R&B, white people "created" the music and now black people have overtook it? Music is music- and it goes beyond every boundery so whoever won this Kwaito award is clearly more talented this year than all the other nominees and may deserve the title King of Kwaito 2007... We have a Miss SA, Miss Namibia every year! Why don't we rotate these titles too! ??

Channel O, get your ish together maan!!! VIP is VERY IMPORTANT PEOPLE!!! treat them right!

It all started as a joke that BS put into writing without intending to offend anyone.... MemeJ raised a concern, BS answered diplomaticaly. Please lets leave the Namibian Kwaito Artist thing alone now. Do we have to bite each other's Heads off like this?

The Artist won and No one....I mean No one is gonna take it away from him. If u have much time to urselves offending other fellow Africans, why not write a letter to the World Summit about Mugabe and his rulings...I mean that would be worth something useful, not this Non-stop nonsense going on here.

TVSA has now more than 8000 members and a whole lot of non-members who are frequent readers....I ask Myself where is this whole lot....I hope u can now get the answers coz I got them......this place is now a Mickey Mouse playhouse.

What kind of pink-light pink or very pink like highlighter pink? Did he look goods besides the colour combo? Hleng talk to me! Do u think they are going to air them or it is just too much of an embarrasement for them to be seen on tv?

Bonang and Slick, how were they?

Smolz
12 Oct 2007 06:20

If they want to embarras themselves even more they must, but if it were by me I wouldn't, the highlight N what saved the event a bit was the performances really.

I must say Bonang N Slikour don't make make a bad couple @ all, donno what you guys think

i've been to events at city hall (apprentice SA announcement ya Tokyo Sexwale, different weddings, Arts Alive peformances) and the place has always looked hot, the problem is when event managers don't get their ish together, and have it looking like a garbage dump!

this is a disgrace, i cannot BELIEVE that black draping, as for that trash by the VIP parking, i almost choked when i saw that. no comment on the long long lines...

heh heh heh - people are naar about south africans not winning - i even forgot you had to vote for winners, i was focussed on making sure that hhp gets the prize at the mtv awards, and was madly voting on their website...channel o needs to step up the awareness campaign on the fact that we have to VOTE for our guys to WIN.

Yo guys.. coz im not in the country.. "and im hearin Namibia scooped the Kwaito award' I decided to conduct my own research on this Gazza dude to see ukba vele he deserves the award. and guess what...> He does. Aaag shame he is like anada Brown Dash. He even has that Bounce and Point..LOL  U know how kwaito stars like to bounce and point in music video's.

I think its cool that kwaito is goin international... BUT i think i see where suga was comin from.  Its really unfortunate that our own guys.." the veterans" aren't gettin recognision.

just search gazza on youtube.. and he is there somewhere.

Im lovin TVSA :)

Guys lets be serious for a second. Anybody who has ever watched O-Boma will tell you that 90% of the people who sms in are Namibians. I for one am not surprised then that Gazza won the award! I have many Namibian friends and have listened to a lot of Gazza's music. One of my favourite tracks from him (even though i can't understand the lyrics) is one in which he disses uMzekezeke, the guy is talented.

I guess my point then is that (a) Namibians definately voted in numbers for him to win the award, I'm pretty sure that few South Africans would have voted for an artist they don't know...but (b) The guy is talented and it is certainly no disgracethat he won the award.

And TVSA loves u right back Buttabee! I'll go and check gazza out. Thanx 4 'hearing' me. And u know with voting it's not even about whether a person deserves an award or not, it's about the number of people who vote and we know SA and voting are not frenz. If HHP's EMA win depends on votes then I'm worried but i'll vote just so i can say i did my part..

Ive neva been more dissapointed with SAcans! Am a zambian living in SA and we take kak from them all the time but we ignore it coz some are cool and most are mates even the cops treat us like al quida stopping to ask for our IDs every few mtres even tho back in zed it NEVER happens as long as youre black youre home.  So what a namibian won the best Kwaito award? I voted for Kabelo but it seems hes so called PIPO didnt have the time but they are quik to complain that he didnt get it and a 'foreighner' did.The rest of africa embraces SA Kwaito artists like they wre there own but at the awards, SAcans COULD NOT applaud for artists from other  african countries it was so sad.Yes i was there and yes it was a flop i was supposed to be in the VIP but found myself downstairs with the masses and i made the most of it coz we wer after all celebrating African music and it is the only award show that brings arican musicians together together. You shud have seen them even though d'bwnj's opening perfomance rocked only a few of them applauded but as soon as one of there own hit the stage even if it was a wack perfomance they screamed like crazy!!We shud learn to be one as africans coz at the end of the day its a big bad world out there and we can only survive it if we unite as africans or does south africa think it can do without the rest of us? Africans?? Enuf about the seerious stuff the after party in the VIP lounge rocked tho it was crouded but thats how a party has to be. I enjoyed the amarula cocktails and DJ waxxys mix so i can say i had a bit of fon by the end of the night. ENUF LOVE FOR ALL AFRICA!!

Hey Brown Shuga, and hey otha peeps, No hard feelings! Seriously. Truly. I wasn't offended. Guess a little surprised and I just wondered why. Not actually hurt a quick response in the moment :) Think I was caught up Brown Shuga's flurry of feelings about life, the universe and the awards. And have to say was amused by BShuga's shock at the 'Untouchables'! Haven't been in the newsroom since I commented, so this is my first chance to see the responses. Informative! U certainly got us going on the music scene ... I mean I didn't know 90% of SMSes on O-Boma from Namibians! Cool with it all, interesting comments ... and, Brown Shuga, if it's any consolation, I spoke to Meryl (in SA) on Saturday and she AGREED with YOUR comments on the disorganisation! People, sitting on floor, etc. Anyway, the only thing I hope is that one of the 'Untouchables' was not sitting in your seat :) PEACE.

LOL @ Meme J, you're funny hi hi hi. It's okay gal, I think the issue was just blown out of proportion by people who did not bother to read my reply to you...I'm over that now and I'm so glad to see you haven't lost your awesome sense of humour in this madness he he he he.

Speaking of Meryl, when you speak to her again please tell her that she is my favourite untouchable and I wasn't as horrified when I saw her he he he.

I also went to myspace and checked out Gazza's Mokasie...it really is nice Kwaito. Even though I couldn't understand what he was saying, it sounded really good and he kept the kwaito tradition of making the song sound like something you've heard before. It reminded me of "thin' ekasi, thin' ekasi, si ghetto fabulous". Not bad!

i've been waiting to say this form the day this article was published!!i never had the courage....i really have an issue with the so called nigerians when it comes to functions that they dominate maybe coz they can feel at home......for example these so called (borrowed words, american nigerians, europian nigerians, nigerian nigerians) are the reason why i stopped attending most churches in jozi, they dominate not only does it end there,if the leader is an nigerian then all the big positions like decons, pastors, ushers etc will be nigerians!!!someone (not from nigeria will be in the church for 3yrs,let a nigerian come...it only takes him less than a month to be someone in the church there,MY POINT IS IT PISSES ME OFF!who do they think they are?IM NOT A SOUTH AFRICAN MYSELF but what happened at the channel o's awards....was very dissapointing and depressing not to mention UNFAIR!i wont be shocked to hear someone is still in shock..THE REST OF AFRICA KNOWS VERY WELL THE BEST KWAITO SINGERS ARE IN S.A,even BABALWA MNENO know's KWAITO BELONGS HERE tho claiming she doesn't listern to kwaito, she doesnt even know the singers she said!THEY MUST TAKE THEM TO LAGOS/ABUJA NEXT YEAR!BESIDES MY ASS AINT GONA ATTEND SUCH FUNCTIONS,NEVER! WHT A DISGRACE..........................
