Widely regarded as one of the greatest films ever made, The Godfather is the first of Coppola’s classic gangster trio, based on the novel of the same name by Mario Puzo.

With a cast including Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, James Caan, Robert Duvall, Talia Shire and Diane Keaton, the movie opens in 1945 and spans a decade in the life of the fictional Italian-American Corleone crime family.

Focusing on the fortunes of ex-serviceman Michael Corleone (Pacino), it traces his evolution from naïve outsider to ruthless mafia Don.

The film won three Oscars, for Best Picture, Best Actor for Brando and Best Adapted Screenplay for Coppola and Puzo.

A follow-up to The Godfather, the film reunites Coppola, Puzo and the main cast with the exception of Brando, and includes Robert De Niro as the young Vito Corleone.

Both a sequel and a prequel to The Godfather, it follows the fortunes of Michael Corleone from 1958 to 1959 and, in a series of flashbacks, reveals the early years of his father, Vito Corleone, from his childhood in Sicily to the founding of the Corleone crime empire in New York.

Nominated for Oscars, the movie won six, including Best Picture, Best Director for Coppola and Best Supporting Actor for De Niro.

The Godfather Part III

Completing the story of the mafia kingpin, The Godfather Part III follows Michael Corleone’s efforts to legitimize the criminal empire he has constructed and make reparation for his ruthless past.

Again directed by Coppola and reuniting Pacino as Corleone, Keaton as his estranged wife Kay and Shire as his sister Connie, the movie also features Andy Garcia as Michael’s nephew and heir-apparent Vincent Mancini, and the director’s daughter Sofia Coppola as Michael’s daughter Mary Corleone.
