The Phantom Hitchhiker

Tales of ghosts are told all over South Africa. Small towns in particular seem to have more than their fair share of phantoms.

The Phantom Hitchhiker is a travel show that showcases and explores places in South Africa that remain relatively unknown. In tracking down the famous ghost and superntural stories of different cities, towns and regions, the show takes viewers on a tour of the country in a quest to find home-grown ghosts.

The series consists of thirteen 24-minute episodes.

DIY Met Riaan (DIY With Riaan) Season 8

DIY Met Riaan returns for an eighth season in it's six-year run. Using simple hand and power tools Riaan demonstrates step by step DIY cost effective ideas.

Riaan’s partner and paint master, Max Tongani returns for the season and together the pair travel around South Africa visiting charity organizations that are in desperate need of their expertise.

Places visited across the 26-part series include the Epilepsy Centre in Dullstroom, the Lenasia Primary school in Gauteng, the C.A.R.E Sanctuary for orphaned baboons in Hoedspruit and poorer homes in the Bo-Kaap.

Shamiela's House (Documentary)

A documentary that centres around a woman who grew up poor and waited her whole life for a house. She finally got one and her home became a haven for many kids in the ganglands of Cape Town.

Her dream became a nightmare when the social housing company, now accused of corruption and mismanagement, tried to evict her unfairly. This story follows Shamiela’s journey to save the roof over her children’s head: from burning tyres to negotiating in the halls of power.

As the negotiations hang in the balance, her diplomatic leadership style and her commitment is challenged by other residents in the struggle. Her battle to save her house becomes a battle for her principles, her dignity and her soul.

Africa Day

Africa Day is a special live broadcast of the Africa Day celebration concert held in Johannesburg at Mary Fitzgerald Square and Mofolo Park in Soweto.

Produced by SABC2 and Arts Alive and hosted by SABC2 and the City Of Johannesburg, the concert celebrates the 45th anniversary of Africa Day.

The commemorative day was established by the then Organisation of African Unity (today known as the African Union), to acknowledge, showcase and celebrate the best of African history, heritage and culture.

The day represents African unity and during the weekend of festivities, the vibrancy and dynamism of African culture gets highlighted.

This years celebrations begin with a free concert on Mary Fitzgerald Square on Saturday, 24th May 2008. The concert is then repeated on Sunday, 25 May 2008 at Mofolo Park in Soweto.

Artists in the line-up include: Senegalese troubadour Ismael Lo, Mozambiquean dub band 340ml, Chiwoniso of Zimbabwe, France-based Ivory Coast muso Dobet Gnahore, the Democratic Republic of Congo's Mapumba  and South Africa’s Zonke.

The organizers will provide for the winter climate - blankets will be distributed to ensure that audiences keep warm and mbaula’s will be strategically set up.

In addition to the concerts, a number of other events form part of the Africa Day celebrations. They are:

- an Arts and Crafts expo at the Museum Africa from 3 - 25 May.
- Mofolo Park Arts Centre will host the Battle of the Bands on the 24 May. The winning group will perform at the Africa Day concert.
- a youth weekend camp will be held in Alexandra from 23 - 25 May, hosted by the Alexander Renewal Project.
- SABC Africa will host an African film festival at Sci-Bono in Newtown from 23 - 27 May.
- The Mbali Project will host the Diepsloot Arts Africa Day textile fair.
