It Happened To Me: Simon & Petrus (Documentary)On: Tuesday, 28 October 2008 at 21h00
Duration: 1 hour
Simon is 41 years old. He is a brilliant scientist who became an orphan when he was still a child. He is a gentle, intelligent man with a boyish appearance. His younger brother developed schizophrenia at a young age and Simon has always been there to care for him.
Four years ago Simon went paragliding, as he always used to on weekends. This particular weekend, things went horribly wrong and Simon’s glider went crashing into the side of a mountain. Simon broke his back and neck in a few places and as a result is a quadriplegic.
Simon says it took him 6 months to feel real again - and it was counselors in wheel chairs who helped him through and made him realize that there is life after such an accident. Three years ago Simon decided to get back into flying - he realised what he was still capable of and began the Disabled Aviation Association which allows disabled people to become pilots and enjoy the freedom of flight.
In this documentary Simon meets Petrus, his friend who lives in Umlazi, a township in KZN. Petrus is trying to organize a cycling event for quadriplegics in Umlazi to raise awareness around disability in his community as well as provide some entertainment for wheelchair confined Township dwellers. Through their attempts to do this they come across all sorts of bureaucratic barriers that reveal the difficulties faced by the disabled in lower socio economic groups.
